Atomic force microscopy (AFM) fabrication of oxide patterns is an attractive technique for nanoscale patterns and related device structures, SiC exhibits good performance in high-power, high-frequency, and high-temperature conditions that is comparable to the performance of Si. The AFM fabrication of oxide patterns on SiC is important for electronic applications. However, there has not been much reported investigations on oxidation of SiC using AFM. We achieved the local oxidation of 4H-SiC using the high loading force of ~100 nN, although the oxidation of SiC is generally difficult mainly due to the physical hardness and chemical inactivity. All the experiments were performed using atomic force microscopy (S.I.S. GmbH, Germany) with a Pt/Ir-coated Si tip at ~40% humidity and room temperature. The spring constant and resonance frequency of the tip were around ~3 N/m and ~70 kHz. We fabricated oxide patterns on n-type 4H-SiC ($\sim10^{19}/cm^3$) and n-type Si ($\sim1.9\times10^{16}/cm^3$). In summary, we demonstrated that the oxide patterns can be obtained over the electric field of ${\sim}\times10^7 V/cm$ and the high loading force using the tip as a cathode. The electric field transports the oxyanions (OH-) to the positively biased surface.

A moored body in the sea is subjected to second-order wave forces as well as to linear oscillatory ones. The second-order farces contain slowly-varying components, of which the characteristic frequency can be as low as the natural frequency of horizontal motions of the moored body. As a consequence, the slowly-varying force can excite unexpectedly large horizontal excursion of the body, which may cause a serious damage on the mooring system. In design analysis of Turret-type mooring system which is one of the interesting mooring systems for a floating body. the slowly-varying drift forces and the transient motion of the system during weathervaning are very important. In this paper the slowly-varying drift forces were calculated by using the Quadratic Transfer Function with considering the second order free-wave contributions. Additionaly the transient surge motion of the moored body was simulated with including the roll of the time-memory effect. In this simulation the spring constant of the spread Turret mooring system is updated at every time step for considering the nonlinear effect.

Harmonic analysis of tide data observed on the western coasts has been conducted. The changing trends of harmonic constants were reviewed. Overall, amplitudes of semidiurnal tide are not changed and present phases are faster than in the past. In Mokpo located in a semi-enclosed bay, the amplitudes have been greatly increased and the phases have become earlier due to construction of sea-dike and seawalls. Harmonic constants of diurnal tide have not been changed except Mokpo. In Mokpo the phases of diurnal tide have been earlier. Tidal ranges in spring tide and neap tide have not been significantly changed except Mokpo. In Mokpo tidal ranges have been increased and tidal flats widened. Approximate higher high water has been overall rising. Therefore, Korean western coasts can be easily inundated than before.
We compare insolation results calculated from two well-known empirical formulas (Socket and Beaudry's SB73 formula and the original Smithsonian (SMS) formula) and a radiative transfer model using input data predicted from meteorological weather-forecast models, and review the accuracy of each method. Comparison of annual mean daily irradiance values for clear-sky conditions between the two formulas shows that, relative to the SMS, the SB73 underestimates spring values by 9 W $m^{-2}$ in the northern Adriatic Sea, although overall there is a good agreement between the annual results calculated with the two formulas. We also elucidate the effect on SMS of changing the 'Sun-Earth distance factor (f)', a parameter which is commonly assumed to be constant in the oceanographic context. Results show that the mean daily solar radiation for clear-sky conditions in the northern Adriatic Sea can be reduced as much as 12 W $m^{-2}$ during summer due to a decrease in the f value. Lastly, surface irradiance values calculated from a simple radiative transfer model (GM02) for clear-sky conditions are compared to those from SB73 and SMS. Comparison with iu situ data in the northern Adriatic Sea shows that the GM02 estimate gives more realistic surface irradiance values than SMS, particularly during summer. Additionally, irradiance values calculated by GM02 using the buoy meteorological fields and ECMWF (The European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts) meteorological data show the suitability of the ECMWF data usage. Through tests of GM02 sensitivity to key regional meteorological factors, we explore the main factors contributing significantly to a reduction in summertime solar irradiance in the Adriatic Sea.
Sap flow in mulberry (Morus species) trees was observed for one month from mid-March in 1981, 1982 and 1990. The results were : 1. Sap flow at 20cm soil depth occurred on April 8, 1981 at 10.1$^{\circ}C$, on April 2, 1982 at 8.3$^{\circ}C$ and March 25, 1990 at 8.7$^{\circ}C$. The data showed a range of 1.8$^{\circ}C$ and 15 days. 2. Water content of the wood decreased with decreasing soil temperature under 8$^{\circ}C$, whereas water content of the cortex remained constant or increased. Water may move form wood to cortex when it was insufficient in cortex. 3. Sap flow at 20cm soil depth occurred when accumulated soil temperature after March 1 about 180$^{\circ}C$.
Using the optical data from the EUMELI 3 and 4 missions, the optical properties are discussed in relation to primary production in the oligotrophic zone of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean. The depth of euphotic layer $(Z_{eu})$, the total accumulated concentration of pigment $(C_{TOT})$ and the concentration of pigment (C) are 88m, $12.4mgm^{-2}\;and\;0.14mgm^{-3}$, respectively for the EUMELI 3 mission and 101.7m, $10.0mgm^{-2}\;and\;0.10mgm^{-3}$, respectively for the EUMELI 4 mission. The concentration of pigment is higher in autumn (EUMELI 3) than in spring (EUMELI 4). This indicates that the concentration of photosynthetic pigment has a close correlation with vertical attenuation coefficient $(K(\lambda))$ that changes seasonally in the euphotic layer. While the spectral distributions of downward Irradiance$(E_d)$ for the wave length of 470nm increase with depth, those of upward irradiance $(E_u)$ for the wave length range between 410nm and 490nm are constant, because the study area is covered with the blue and clear oceanic deep waters. The vertical attenuation coefficients of downward irradiance $(K_d)$ and upward irradiance $(K_u)$ have low values between 0.02 and $0.06m^{-1}$ due to the low absorption and scattering by the photosynthetic pigment of phytoplankton. Therefore this zone has the characteristics of the case 1 waters with low concentrations of photosynthetic pigment, and can be classifed into IB.
Friction characteristics at nano-scale of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) having different chain lengths and end groups were experimentally studied.51 order to understand the effect of the chain length and end group on the nano-scalefriction: (1) two different SAMs of shorter chain lengths with different end groups such as methyl and phenyl groups, and (2)four different kinds of SAMs having long chain lengths (C10) with end groups of fluorine and hydrogen were coated on siliconwafer (100) by dipping method and Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) technique. Their nano-scale friction was measuredusing an Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) in the range of 0-40 nN normal loads. Measurements were conducted at the scanning speed of 2 $mu$m/s for the scan size of 1$mu$m x 1 $mu$m using a contact mode type $Si_3N_4$ tip (NPS 20) that had a nominal spring constant0.58 N/m. All experiments were conducted at anlbient temperature (24 $pm$1$circ$C) and relative humidity (45 $pm$ 5%). Results showedthat the friction force increased with applied normal load for all samples, and that the silicon wafer exhibited highest frictionwhen compared to SAMs. While friction was affected by the inherent adhesion in silicon wafer, it was influenced by the chainlength and end group in the SAMs. It was observed that the nano-friction decreased with the chain length in SAMs. In the caseof monolayers with shorter length, the one with the phenyl group exhibited higher friction owing to the presence of benBenerings that are stiffer in nature. In the case of SAMs with longer chain length, those with fluorine showed friction values relativelyhigher than those of hydrogen. The increase in friction due to the presence of fluorine group has been discussed with respect tothe siBe of the fluorine atom.
This study revealed the differences in runoff processes of granite drainage basins in Korea and Mongolia by hydrological measurements in the field. The experimental drainage basins are chosen in Korea (K-basin) and Mongolia (M-basin). Occurrence of intermittent flow in K-basin possibly implies that very quick discharge dominates. The very high runoff coefficient implies that most of effective rainfall quickly discharge by throughflow or pipeflow. The Hortonian overlandflow is thought to almost not occur because of high infiltration capacity originated by coarse grain sized soils of K- basin. Very little baseflow and high runoff coefficient also suggest that rainfall almost does not infiltrate into bedrocks in K-basin. Flood runoff coefficient in M-basin shows less than 1 %. This means that most of rainfall infiltrates or evaporates in M-basin. Runoff characteristics of constant and gradually increasing discharge imply that most of rainfall infiltrates into joint planes of bedrock and flow out from spring very slowly. The hydrograph peaks are sharp and their recession limbs steep. Very short time flood with less than 1-hour lag time in M-basin means that overland flow occurs only associating with rainfall intensity of more than 10 mm/hr. When peak lag time shows less than 1 hour for the size of drainage area of 1 to 10 km2, Hortonian overland flow causes peak discharge (Jones, 1997). The results of electric conductivity suggest that residence time in soils or weathered mantles of M-basin is longer than that of K-basin. Qucik discharge caused by throughflow and pipeflow occurs dominantly in K-basin, whereas baseflow more dominantly occur than quick discharge in M-basin. Quick discharge caused by Hortonian overlandflow only associating with rainfall intensity of more than 10 mm/hr in M-basin.
This study was intended to analyze the dynamic force system which induced the shattering of paddy grains. A model to predict the shattering of paddy grains was developed, and physical quantities, such as mass distribution and rigidity of rice plant, needed for evaluating the minimum shattering forces were also measured. Under the assumption that rice plant right before harvesting is a vibratory system, the mathematical model of the vibratory system was developed and solved with the varied conditions of forcing functions. The results of the study were summarized as follows: 1. The shattering of grain occurred at the abscission layer of grain by the bending moments resulted from the impact force due to the collision of panicles of rice plant. 2. The vibratory model developed for milyang 23 rice variety was analyzed to give the natural frequencies of 7-9 Hz, which were closely related with the excitation frequencies of 4-10 Hz caused by various machine parts besides engine. Thus, avoiding the resonance should be taken into consideration in the design of the harvesting machinery. 3. It was analyzed to predict the lowest frequency that could develop the shattering when the excitation force was applied to the lower end of stem. The lowest frequency for the Milyang 23 rice variety ranged from 8.33 Hz to 11.66 Hz as the amplitude varied from 1 cm to 2.5 cm. 4. The degree of shattering depended upon the magnitude of the impact force and its application point. For Milyang 23 rice variety, the minimum impact force developing the shattering was $5g_f$ when it was applied at 1 cm above the lower end of stern and $1g_f$ when applied at 5 cm above the lower end of stem. 5. The minimum colliding velocity of the panicle, when it was on the ground that would just develop the shattering, was given as follows, $$V=\sqrt{\frac{K_t}{m_g}{\cdot}{{\phi}^2}}$$ where V : The colliding velocity of the panicle against ground to cause the shatteering of rice grain. (cm/sec) $K_t$ : The minimum spring constant for bending at the abscission layer of grain. (dyne-cm/rad) ${\phi}$ : The minimum shattering angle of grain (rad) $m_g$ : The maximum mass of grain. (g).
The stability problem of steady motion of a rigid body with multi-elastic appendages and multi-liquid-filled cavities, in the presence of no external forces or torque, is considered in this paper. The flexible appendages are modeled as the clamped -free-free-free rectangular plates, or/and as the discrete mass- spring sub-system. The motion of liquid in every single ellipsoidal cavity is modeled as the uniform vortex motion with a finite number of degrees of freedom. Assuming that stationary holonomic constraints imposed on the body allow its rotation about a spatially fixed axis, the equation of motion for such a systematic configuration can be very complex. It consists of a set of ordinary differential equations for the motion of the rigid body, the uniform rotation of the contained liquids, the motion of discrete elastic parts, and a set of partial differential equations for the elastic appendages supplemented by appropriate initial and boundary conditions. In addition, for such a hybrid system, under suitable assumptions, their equations of motion have four types of first integrals, i.e., energy and area, Helmholtz' constancy of liquid - vortexes, and the constant of the Poisson equation of motion. Chetaev's effective method for constructing Liapunov functions in the form of a set of first integrals of the equations of the perturbed motion is employed to investigate the sufficient stability conditions of steady motions of the complete system in the sense of Liapunov, i.e., with respect to the variables determining the motion of the solid body and to some quantities which define integrally the motion of flexible appendages. These sufficient conditions take into account the vortexes of the contained liquids, the vibration of the flexible components, and coupling among the liquid-elasticity solid.
