The spray characteristics of GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) injector affects on engine efficiency and emission of a GDI engine. Thus, many researchers have investigated the spray characteristics and the mixture formation of GDI injector. In this study, it was tried to provide the fundamental data for GDl injector design which effects on the spray macroscopic characteristics such as penetration and spray angle. In addition, the mixture formation analyzed by using entropy analysis. The entropy analysis is based on the concept of statistical entropy, and it identifies the degree of homogeneity in the fuel concentration. The results show that as injection pressure increases but as ambient pressure increases, spray penetration decreases and spray angle doesn't affected by increasing injection pressure and ambient temperature. From the entropy analysis results, we could find that the direct diffusion phenomena is a dominant factor in the formation of a homogeneous mixture at downstream of GDI spray especially in vaporizing conditions.

The effects of change in injection pressure on spray structure have been investigated in high temperature and pressure field. To analyze the structure of evaporative diesel spray is important in speculation of mixture formation process. Also emissions of diesel engines can be controlled by the analyzed results. Therefore, this study examines the evaporating spray structure by using a constant volume vessel. The injection pressure is selected as the experimental parameter, is changed from 72 MPa to 112 MPa with a high pressure injection system(ECD-U2). The PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique was used to capture flow variation of the evaporative diesel spray. A study on the mixture formation process of diesel spray was executed by the results of flow analysis in this study. Consequentially the large-scale vortex flow could be found in downstream spray and the formed vortex governs the mixture formation process in diesel spray.
In the cylinder of gasoline direct injection engines, the spray targeting from injectors is of great significance for fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. The automotive industry is putting a lot of effort into improving injector targeting accuracy. To improve the targeting accuracy of injectors, it is necessary to develop models that can predict the spray targeting positions. When developing spray targeting models, the most used technique is computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Recently, due to the superiority of machine learning in prediction accuracy, the application of machine learning in this field is also receiving constant attention. The purpose of this study is to build a machine learning model that can accurately predict spray targeting based on the design parameters of injectors. To achieve this goal, this study firstly used laser sheet beam visualization equipment to obtain many spray cross-sectional images of injectors with different parameters at different injection pressures and measurement planes. The spray images were processed by MATLAB code to get the targeting coordinates of sprays. A total of four models were used for the prediction of spray targeting coordinates, namely ANN, LSTM, Conv1D and Conv1D & LSTM. Features fed into the machine learning model include injector design parameters, injection conditions, and measurement planes. Labels to be output from the model are spray targeting coordinates. In addition, the spray data of 7 injectors were used for model training, and the spray data of the remaining one injector were used for model performance verification. Finally, the prediction performance of the model was evaluated by R2 and RMSE. It is found that the Conv1D&LSTM model has the highest accuracy in predicting the spray targeting coordinates, which can reach 98%. In addition, the prediction bias of the model becomes larger as the distance from the injector tip increases.

In this study, injection quantity, rate and spray image of multiple injections which are important design parameters for a piezo type injector have been investigated. Interval of injections and a number of injections in multiple injection strategy has been controlled to verify interaction of each injection. Spray characteristics of multiple injections have been researched through optical process with a high speed camera in a high pressure chamber. In addition, a method of RMS(Root Mean Square) process has been used for comprehending the distribution of injection easily. As a result, in case of piezo type injector, characteristics of injection quantity according to charging voltage and the difference of injection quantity between single and triple injection were confirmed. Also, injection rate for increasing injection duration was confirmed. And spray characteristics of multiple injections were improved; multiple injections were possible in a shorter time interval between each injection. With this study, a possibilities of more accurate multiple injection control would be expected.

Deteriorated agricultural diesel engines using mechanical fuel injection systems have low fuel injection pressures. And they are not equipped with an exhaust gas abatement device, so it produces a lot of exhaust gas. Remanufactured used injectors can reduce emissions because spray characteristics are improved. In addition, remanufacturing is environmentally friendly and economical compared to producing new parts. For efficient injector remanufacturing, it is necessary to conduct a comparison experiment on the spray characteristics of an used mechanical injector and a new injector of the same model. In this study, the spray characteristics of the two injectors were compared by performing an injection quantity measurement and a spray visualization experiment. As a result, the used injector had a larger injection quantity, a shorter spray tip penetration, a wider spray angle and a smaller spray area than the new injector.
The main parameter commonly used to evaluate spray distribution is spray angle. Spray angle is important because it influences the axial and radial distribution of the fuel. Spray angles were measured and compared for the two non-air assisted injectors such as 2hole-2stream 4hole-1stream injectors used for port fuel injection gasoline engines with n-heptane as a fuel by three different measuring techniques, i.e., digital image processing, shadowgraphy, and spray patternator, respectively. Fuel was injected with the injection pressures of 0.2-0.35 MPa into the room temperature and atmospheric pressure environment. In digital image processing approach, the selection of the transmittance level is critical to obtain the edge of spray and hence to measure the spray angle. From the measurement results by the shadowgraphy technique, it is dear that the spray angle is varied during the spray injection period. The measurement results from spray patternator show that the different spray angles exist in different region. Spray angle increases with the increase in the injection pressure. it is suggested that the spray angle and stream separated angle should be specified when spray is characterized for 2hole-2stream injector, because spray angle is much different though stream separated angle is same. It was also considerably affected by the measurement techniques introduced in this experimental work. However, the optimal axial distance for measuring the spray angle seems to be at least 60-80 mm from the injector tip for two non-air assisted injectors.
High injection pressure system has been developed as a measure to reduce harmful exhaust gases. In order to understand the effect of pressure on diesel spray injection process, wide range of high injection pressure was tested. The gas phase is modelled by the Eulerian continuum conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and fuel vapour fraction. The liquid phase is modelled following the discrete droplet model approach in Lagrangian form. The droplet distributions, vapor fractions and gas flows are analyzed in various injection pressure cases. The distributions of spray and vapor increase and the Sauter mean diameter decreases with increasing injection pressure quickly in a low pressure area but slowly in a high pressure area.
The spray characteristics of the high speed rotating fuel injection system were studied. The five variants of rotating fuel nozzle were used by spray test. The diameter of single column injection orifices are varied from 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm and 5 mm. We constructed high speed rotating test rig and measured droplet size by PDPA (Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) system. Also spray was visualized by using high speed camera. In the test results, we could understand that length of liquid column from the injection orifice is mainly controlled by the rotational speeds. SMD is decreased with increasing injection orifice diameter and rotational speeds. Furthermore, from the comparison to the theoritical calculation, we confirmed that SMD is influenced by the liquid film thickness which is formed inner surface of injection orifice.
This experiment was undertaken to investigate the spray characteristics of the conventional injection system and the ultrasonic energy added injection system. Test fuels include light oil and mixed light-BC oil. The mixed light-BC oil was injected at the normal temperature$(20^{\circ}C)$ and the high temperature$(95{\pm}2^{\circ}C)$ and injection pressure was $120kg/cm^2$. Sauter mean diameter was measured under the variation of the spray distance. To measure the droplet size, we used the Malvern system 2600C. Droplet size distribution was analyzed from the result data of Malvern system. It is also found that the condition of the ultrasonic energy added injection and high temperature injection generates the smaller droplets than that of the conventional injection.
This paper addresses to the injection pressure effect on the diesel spray. The injection pressure is varied from 10MPa, in general system, upto 200MPa, in high pressured system in order to understand the effect. The gas phase is modelled in terms of the Eulerian continuum conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and fuel vapour fraction. The liquid phase is modelled following the discrete droplet model approach in Lagrangian form. The droplet distributions, vapor fractions and gas flows are analyzed in various injection pressure cases.
