The purpose of this study is to investigate the macroscopic spray characteristics and spray pattern of a gasoline direct injection (GDI) injector according to the increase of injection pressure. The macroscopic spray characteristics, such as a spray tip penetration and spray angle, were measured and analyzed from the frozen spray images, which are obtained from the spray visualization system including the high-speed camera, light-source, long-distance microscope (LDM). The spray pattern was analyzed through the deviation of the center of the spray plum and images were acquired using Nd: YAG Laser and ICCD(Intensified charge coupled device) camera. From the experiment and analysis, it revealed that the injection pressure have a significant influence on the spray tip penetration and spray pattern. However, the injection pressure have little influence on the spray angle. The increase of injection pressure induced the reduction of a closing delay. In addition, the deviation of spray center increase with the increase of injection pressure and the distance from a nozzle tip.
Injection rate, injection quantity and injection timing of fuel are controlled precisely by electric control in CRDI system. Particularly, injection rate being influenced with injection pressure affects to spray characteristics and fuel-air ratio, so it is a very important factor in diesel combustion. In this study, injection rates in accordance with injection pressure at a constant ambient pressure were measured with Zeuch's method. Under the same condition, non-evaporating spray images were taken with a high speed camera and analyzed carefully with Adobe Photoshop CS3. Macroscopic spray characteristics and breakup processes in the spray could be found from the examined and analyzed data. Injection start time and injection period were practically affected with injection pressure. Also, initial injection rate, spray penetration, spray angle and breakup of high density droplets region in the spray were affected with injection pressure. The results and techniques of spray visualization and injection rate measurement in this study would be practically effective to study a high pressure diesel spray for common rail direct injection system.
This work was performed to investigate the effect of a split injection on spray characteristics of fuel sprays injected from a common rail system. In order to analyze the spray behavior and atomization characteristics at various rates of split injections, the injection durations of pilot and main injections were varied in experiments. The injection rate of split injection was measured to study the effect of the pilot injection on the main injection. By using a Nd:YAG laser and an ICCD camera, the development of the injected spray was visualized at various elapsed time from the start of injection. The microscopic characteristics such as SMD and axial velocity were analyzed by using a phase Doppler particle analyzer system. The results indicate that the ambient gas flow generated by the pilot injection affects the behavior of main spray, whereas the effect of pressure variation on the main spray is little. The spray tip penetration of a main spray with pilot injection is longer than that of the single injection by the effect of ambient gas flow. Also the main spray produces larger droplets than the pilot spray due to a small relative velocity between the droplets and ambient gas.
The aim of this investigation is to study the effect of the high injection pressure on the dimethyl ether (DME) spray characteristics injected through a common-rail diesel injector under various ambient pressures. In order to investigate the effect of the injection pressure and ambient condition, the common-rail injection system with two high pressure pumps and high pressure chamber pressurized up to 40 bar were used, respectively. Spray images of DME fuel obtained from a visualization system composed of high speed camera and two metal halide lamps as the light source. From the obtained images, the spray behaviors such as a spray development process, spray tip penetration, spray width, and spray cone angle were measured for analyzing the DME spray characteristics under various experimental conditions. It was found that the spray development slowed as the ambient pressure increased and spray tip penetration at injection pressure of 90 MPa is longer than that at 50 MPa. In addition, the spray width at the end stage of injection decreased under the atmospheric conditions due to the evaporation property of DME fuel, and DME spray shows narrow spray cone angle according to the injection pressure increased.
The purpose of this study is the experimental and numerical investigation on the DME spray characteristics in the combustion chamber according to the injection timing in a common-rail injection system. The visualization system consisted of the high speed camera with metal halide lamp was used for analyzing the spray characteristics such as spray development processes and the spray tip penetration in the free and in-cylinder spray under various ambient pressure. In order to observe the spray characteristics as a function of injection timing, the piston head shape of re-entrant type was created and the fuel injected into the chamber according to various distance between nozzle tip and piston wall in consideration of injection timing. Also, the spray and evaporation characteristics in the cylinder was calculated by using KlVA-3V code for simulating spray development process and spray tip penetration under real engine conditions. It was revealed that the high ambient pressure of 3 MPa was led to delay the spray development and evaporation of DME spray. In addition, injected sprays after BTDC 20 degrees entered the bowl region and the spray at the BTDC 30 degrees was divided into two regions. In the calculated results, the liquefied spray tip penetration and fuel evaporation were shorter and more increased as the injection timing was retarded, respectively.
This paper describes the characteristics of injection rate and macroscopic behavior of fuel spray injected from common-rail type diesel injectors with different nozzle geometries. The injection rates according to the nozzle geometries were measured at different energizing duration of the injector solenoid and injection pressure by using the Bosch's injection rate meter based on the pressure variation in the tube. The spray behaviors injected from the different nozzles were visualized using the spray visualization system composed of an Ar-ion laser, an ICCD camera, and a synchronization system at various injection and ambient pressures. It is revealed that VCO nozzle has higher spray tip velocity at the early stage of injection duration and wider spray cone angle than the mini-sac nozzles. Also the spray cone angle is increased with the increase of nozzle diameter.
The CFD simulation of diesel spray tip penetrations were compared with 0-D simulation for experimental data obtained with common rail injection system. The simulated four injection patterns include single, pilot and split injections. The CFD simulation of the spray penetration over these injection patterns was performed using the KIVA-3V code, which was implemented with both the standard KIVA spray and original gas jet sub-models. 0-D simulation of the spray tip penetration with time-varying injection profiles was formulated based on the effective injection velocity concept as an extension of steady gas jet theory. Both the CFD simulation of the spray tip penetration with the standard KIVA spray model and 0-D simulation matched better with the experimental data than the results of the gas jet model for the entire fuel injection patterns.
The purpose of this study is to compare the injection and spray characteristics of single-hole GDI injectors using injection rate and mie-scattering spray images. Five types of single-hole injectors with different nozzle hole diameters were used, and the spray rate, spray tip penetration, spray area, and spray width were analyzed. As a result, the diameter of the nozzle hole had a direct effect on the injection and spray characteristics. It was confirmed that the larger the diameter of the nozzle hole, the higher the injection quantity, the spray tip penetration, the spray area, and the spray width. In addition, it was confirmed that the near-field spray, which has little influence of ambient air, has a great correlation with the injection rate.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of biodiesel derived from waste cooking oil on the spray behavior and macroscopic spray characteristics. To analyze quantitative characteristics of test fuels, injection quantity was measured at various injection pressures and the spray images of injected fuels in the pressurized chamber were obtained by using a high speed camera and image analysis system. Based on the measured spray images, the spray tip penetration and spray cone angle were investigated at various energizing timings and injection pressures. In this work, the experimental results showed that the injection quantity of waste cooking biodiesel indicated the higher quantities than diesel at high injection pressure. As the injection pressure was increased, the spray tip penetrations of biodiesel were higher value than diesel. The difference of penetration between biodiesel and conventional diesel fuel was reduced in accordance with the increase of injection pressure. Also, the spray angles of diesel were larger than that of biodiesel because diesel fuel has lower viscosity than biodiesel. In addition, the spray evolution processes of biodiesel fuel at various injection pressures and the elapsed time after the injection were compared to the conventional diesel fuel.
Spray characteristics on diesel- water emulsion are analyzed in high pressure injection for several variables such as water content, injection pressure. Spray Patterns were visualized under various water content and injection pressures. Spray tip penetration was increased and spray angle decreased in accordance with increasing of water content. But these characteristics were enhanced with increase of injection pressure to high pressure.
