  • This paper investigates the dynamic behavior of a HDD spindle system due to the imperfect roundness of a rotating shaft. The shaft of a spindle motor rotates with eccentricity by the unbalanced mass of the rotating part. The eccentricity generates the run-out of a spindle motor which results in the eccentric motion of a rotating part. Roundness of a shaft affects this motion which limits the memory capacity of a HDD. This research proposes a modified Reynolds equation for the coupled journal and thrust FDBs to include the variable film thickness due to the roundness. Finite element method is used to solve the Reynolds equation for the pressure distribution. Reaction forces and friction torque are obtained by integrating the pressure and shear stress, respectively. The dynamic behavior is determined by solving the equations of a motion of a HDD spindle system in six degrees of freedom with the Runge-Kutta method to characterize the motion of a rotating part. This research shows that the roundness of a rotating shaft causes the excitation frequency with integer multiple of a rotating frequency.

  • In this paper, the feedforward control with least mean square (LMS) adaptive algorithm is proposed and examined to reduce rotating error by runout of an active magnetic bearing system. Using eddy-current type gap sensor fur control, the electrical runout caused by non-uniform material properties of sensor target produces rotational error amplified in feedback control loop, so this runout should be eliminated to increase rotating accuracy. The adaptive feedforward controller is designed and examined its tracking and stability performances numerically with established frequency response function. The tested grinding spindle system is manufactured with a 5.5 ㎾ internal motor and 5-axis active magnetic bearing system including 5 eddy current gap sensors which have approximately 15 ~ 30 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of electrical runout. According to the experimental analysis, the error signal in radial bearings is reduced to less than 5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ when it is rotating up to 50,000 rpm due to applying the feedforward control for first order harmonic frequency, and vibration of the spindle base is also reduced about same frequency.

  • Fluid dynamic bearings (FDBs) have been replacing ball bearings of the HDD spindle motor very rapidly. But there are several demerits of HDB, such as high friction torque, variable viscosity of the fluid lubricant depending on operating temperature, low stiffness, and etc. Eccentricity is one of the major parameters which affects the static and dynamic characteristics. As the static eccentricity is larger, the stiffness and the damping coefficients become bigger. But friction torque is relatively unaffected by the static eccentricity. This research proposes a new type of journal bearing with asymmetric journal grooves which results in better dynamic characteristics. The static and dynamic characteristics of the new journal bearing are investigated by solving the Reynolds' equation with FEM, and the transient analysis is performed to predict the dynamic behavior of rotor by solving the equations of motion of a HDD spindle system with Runge-Kutta method. The result shows that the proposed Journal bearings have much bigger stiffness and damping coefficients compared with the conventional symmetric ones. And consequently, it has smaller whirl radius and tilting angle.

  • This paper describes influence of thermal deformation on nosic characteristics in high speed spindle systems. Heat generation in front, rear spindle bearings and built in motor lead to diverse thermal deformation of headstock with time. This deformation changes assemble tolerance in bearing housing, especially to elliptic form. The elliptic assemble tolerance generate high nosie level with dominant amplitude in double rotational frequency.

  • Cooling characteristics of cooling jacket for spindle system with built-in motor are studied. Three dimensional model was selected for the analysis of the helical-type cooling jacket. This model includes the estimation on the amount of heat generation from bearing and built-in motor and the thermal characteristic values such as heat flux on the boundary. The temperature distributions are analyzed and the cooling by Nusselt number and total heat transfer coefficient. Numerical results show that stream-wise cross section area and flow rate are important factors for cooling characteristics of cooling jacket.

  • A spindle with a built-in motor can be used to simplify the structure of a machine tool system, but the rotor inevitably has unbalanced mass. This paper presents an analysis of the dynamic behavior. The spindle was used in a CNC lathe and investigated using the finite element method and transfer matrices. The high-speed spindle can be very sensitive to the rotation of an unbalanced mass, which has a harmful effect on many machine tools. Thus, a balancing procedure was performed with a spindle-bearing system for the CNC lathe by numerical analysis. The balancing was performed through the influence coefficient method, and the whirl orbit radii before and after balancing were compared to evaluate the effects. The results show that the rotational speed of the spindle seriously affects the whirl responses of the spindle. The whirl responses were also affected by other factors, such as the unbalanced mass and bearing stiffness. The balancing of the assembled spindle model significantly reduced the whirl orbit magnitude.

  • The recording density of HDD is increasing in ratio of 100% each year. Because the increasing of recording density requires the feature of high rotation, fixation and low-noise, fluid hydrodynamic bearing(FDB) has been paid attention to overcome a limitation in ball bearing. Most of researches related to improving performance of FDB have been studied in Japan which has 80% more market share of HDD spindle motor assembly. Main subject of studies are about for the design of the groove shape, manufacturing process of fluid dynamic bearing, performance evaluation and measurement. In HDD, non-repeatable runout(NRRO) is most important parameter which determines the performance of HDD spindle system because NRRO is unpredictable that cannot be compensated in head/slider servo system. In this study, performance evaluation system can measure dynamic behaviors were designed and methodology for calculating imbalance, RRO, and NRRO were proposed.

  • The Reynolds equation, incorporating Elrods cavitation algorithm, is discretized on a rectangular grid in computational space through coordinate mapping in order to accurately analyze a herringbone grooved journal bearing of a spindle motor in a computer hard disk drive. The pressure distribution and cavitation area are determined by using the finite volume method. Predicted results are compared to experimental data of previous researchers. It was found that positive pressure is developed within the converging section of the bearing and that a cavity occurs in the diverging section. Cavitation has been neglected in the previous analysis of the herringbone grooved bearing. Load capacity and bearing torque are increased due to the increased of eccentricity and L/D and the decrease of the grooved width ratio. The maximum load capacity was found to occur at a groove angle of 30 degrees while bearing torque remains constant due to the variation of the groove angle. The cavitation region is significantly decreased with the inclusion of herringbone grooves. However, the region increases with the increase of the eccentricity, L/D, groove angle and the rotational speed and the decrease of the grooved width ratio.

  • Magnetic encoder with relatively low pulse per rotation is generally used for detecting speed of the high-speed rotating machine. It is due to the fact of the mechanical problems of vibration and bearing stiffness and also the limit of maximum output pulse of the mounted encoder. The magnetic encoder is divided into two types, that is, toothed gear-wheel method and magnetic wheel method according to the shape of the rotation disk. In case of detecting speed by the tooth gear-wheel, the encoder itself can be acted as the additional inertia where the number of tooth determining the output pulse and the width of the wheel detecting the change of the magnetic flux density are relatively enough large considering the volume of the rotating machine. While the magnetic wheel method has the limit of the magnetizing number of the ring magnet, there is relatively few, if nv, the influence of inertia on the machine. In this paper, it is proposed a simple magnetic wheel encoder suited for the high speed rotating machine and the method of signal processing and the output characteristics are examined through the V/F operation of max 48,000(rpm) and 2.4(KW) spindle motor.
