The purpose of this study is to find out the competence of porspective speech and language pathologist according to Clinical practicums and to use it as basic data in guiding porspective speech and language pathologist. The porspective speech and language pathologist competence consisted of tasks, knowledge, skills, and language areas, and a total of 36 questionnaires were organized by dividing the language areas into sub-areas of smantics, morphology and pragmatics. A total of 105 questionnaires were collected from students with experience in Clinical practicums. A t-test, Pearson correlation analysis, and simple regression analysis were conducted to analyze the competence of porspective speech and language pathologist according to whether or not they practiced. The results of this study are as follows. First, there were significant differences between groups in all areas of knowledge, tasks, skills, and language in the competence area. Second, there was a very strong correlation between competence and language sub-areas. Third, it was found that it had a significant explanatory power in the sub-area of competence and language areas, and had a positive effect on the competence of porspective speech and language pathologist. This study is meaningful in that it should be based on theoretical knowledge of language elements to enhance the competence of porspective speech and language pathologist, and it can be confirmed that theory affects the competence of porspective speech and language pathologist. It is expected to be meaningfully used as a basis for efficient teaching methods based on the improvement of the capabilities of porspective speech and language pathologist, training training professional language rehabilitators, and theory, and theory.
Objective: This study aims to investigate the speech rate, the length of a pause, habitual pitch, and voice intensity of motherese. Subjects and Methods: The research participants comprised 20 mothers (mean age 33 years). Speech data were collected and analyzed using the Real-time Pitch software (KayPENTAX(R)). Results: The average speech rate was 5.33 syllables per second without their infant present and 4.26 syllables per second with their infant present. The average pause length was 1.09 s without their infant present and 1.56 s with their infant present. The average habitual pitch was 199.79 Hz without their infant present and 227.15 Hz with their infant present. The average voice loudness was 61.09 dB without their infant present and 64.49 dB with their infant present. Conclusion: This study presented clinical information for efficiently managing the speech therapy issues of infants and children. This includes proper acoustic and phonological information to recommend to main caregivers.
This study attempted to determine the effects of a cooperative and cognitive group therapy compared to individual therapy in 24 aphasic subjects. Two dependent variables were measured overall language performance, functional communication skills. 18 subjects with different types and severity of aphasia participated in the group therapy. 6 aphasic subjects participated in the individual therapy and they functioned as a control group. The subjects were ranged from 27 to 59 years in age. The group therapy using the cooperative learning utilized the following procedures. First, 6 aphasics constituted 1 group where each subject peformed a task and they monitored one another. Second, 2 aphasics consisted 1 group and they cooperated to perform a task. Third, 3 groups with 2 aphasics in a group competed one another in a task where the 2 aphasics had to cooperated. Finally, the investigator gave the feedback to the group and she and the subjects discussed the overall procedures of the therapy. The above mentioned 2 tests were administered pre- and post-treatment. A repeated two-way ANOVA was performed for analysis. The results showed that the group therapy was more effective in improving overall language performance as compared to the individual therapy. And, the group therapy was more effective in increasing functional communication skills as compared to the individual therapy.
Motor aphasia is an affection frequently caused by insult of the left middle cerebral artery and usually accompanied by a large lesion involving the Broca's area and the adjacent motor and premotor areas. Therefore, a patient with motor aphasia commonly shows articulatory disturbances due to failure of the motor programing of speech sound. Objective assessment and treatment of phonologic programing is one of the important aspects of speech therapy in aphasic patients. We analyzed the speech disorders acompanied with motor aphasia in a 45-year-old man using a computerized sound spectrograph, Visi-$Pitch{\circledR}$, and Multi-Dimensional Voice $Program{\circledR}$. We concluded that a computerized speech analysis system is a useful tool to visualize and quantitatively analyse the severity and progression of dysarthria, and the effect of speech therapy.
Background: Velopharyngeal insufficiency that accompanies speech resonance and articulation disorders can be managed through several intervention methods such as speech-language therapy, prosthetic aids, and surgery. However, for patients with severe hypernasality, surgical interventions are highly recommended. Among available surgical techniques, the posterior pharyngeal flap is most common. Case presentation: Two adult males with high nasalance scores underwent superiorly based posterior pharyngeal flap surgery, followed by speech testing by an expert speech-language therapist. Nasalance scores and articulation accuracy were assessed up until 1 year after the surgery. Nasalance scores were measured five times using a nasometer, after which the average value was calculated. Conclusions: Consistent declines in hypernasality over time are not easy to explain since the pedicled pharyngeal flap narrowed over time, secondary to cicatrization. However, scar tethering of the soft palate in a posterior direction could reduce the velopharyngeal port size over time. Therefore, long-term follow-up with intensive speech therapy is suggested for patients with severe hypernasality.
General characteristics of speech in deft palate patients are hypemasality and articulation disorder, which are affected by velopharyngeal inadequacy(VPI). 17 subjects with a chief complaint of 'nasal sounds and inaccurate pronunciation' underwent a speech-language evaluation before and after pharyngoplasty. Hypemasality and obligatory articulation errors were improved but compensatory articulation errors remained after pharyngoplasty. Above mentioned results indicate that resonance may be normal or improved following successful surgical management of VPI but, compensatory articulation errors will still persist. The separate recognition of hypemasality, compensatory and obligatory articulation errors in deft palate patients is important in determining the timing of therapy and selection of appropriate targets in therapy.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference between respiratory function and speech production, according to the seat surface inclination while in the sitting position. Methods: Respiratory function (FVC, FEV1) and speech production (inspiratory frequency, unit reading time, paragraph reading time) were measured in 3 sitting conditions: horizontal seat surface, seat surface tilted forward 15 degrees, and seat surface tilted backward 15 degrees. Results: We found that the mean values of FVC and FEV1 were statistically significant different according to three types of sitting positions (p<0.05). The following result was observed: forward tilted sitting > horizontal sitting > backward tilted sitting. There was no significant difference in speech production between the different positions. Respiratory function and speech production had a significantly negative correlation in the forward tilted condition and the backward tilted condition. Conclusion: This finding suggests that the seat surface inclination have an effect on respiratory function. Especially, forward tilted sitting may be an effective posture that may help increases the respiratory function.
Objectives: This study is a clinical report of a patient with ADHD and learning disorders who is being treated with hyperbaric oxygen, scalp acupuncture, cognitive enhancement therapy and speech-language therapy. Methods: The BASA-R, BASA-M and REVT tests were used for the diagnosis of learning disorders. For the treatment, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, scalp acupuncture, cognitive enhancement therapy and speech-language therapy were all being used. The Raven's matrix tests were compared for between before and after the abovementioned therapies. Results: After the treatment, Raven's matrix test grade improved from 4 to 5. The improvement of the patient's concentration, communication, motion, confidence, and sleep conditions were observed. Conclusions: These therapies including the hyperbaric oxygen therapy are efficient for the treatment of ADHD and learning disorders.

In this study, we investigated the current status of written discourse mediation in a more general and in-depth manner, including the training completion experience and knowledge of written discourse mediation among Speech-Language Pathologists in Korea, and the Speech-Language Pathologists' perceptions of written discourse mediation. We wanted to look into the requirements. Research results were derived through a questionnaire answered by 110 Speech-Language Pathologists. As a result, although most Speech-Language Pathologists learned about written discourse intervention in the curriculum, their application of written discourse intervention in clinical settings is insufficient and they have difficulty with written discourse intervention due to lack of systematic and professional knowledge of this intervention. I could tell that I was feeling it. Looking at the status of written discourse intervention, only 46.4% of the Speech-Language Pathologists who responded in clinical settings showed that they had experience with written discourse intervention. In other words, it was analyzed that 53.6% of respondents had no experience with writing discourse mediation. As a result of Speech-Language Pathologists' perception and demand for written discourse intervention, 76.4% of SpeechLanguage Pathologists responded that they thought written discourse intervention was an important area of speech therapy. In addition, 62.8% of respondents responded that a curriculum for discourse mediation is necessary, more than 90% said that continuous research on written discourse mediation is necessary, and 89.1% thought that the development of textbooks and teaching aids was necessary. This study is significant in that it investigated the experiences and perceptions of Speech-Language Pathologists in written discourse intervention and analyzed the results in that it provided direction on how education and various processes related to written discourse intervention should be conducted.
The purpose of the convergence study is to provide basic data for improving job satisfaction of speech and language therapists by identifying the relationship between personal characteristics, empathy ability, and job satisfaction of speech and language therapists, especially between cognitive and emotional empathy ability and job satisfaction. The subjects of the study were 111 people of speech and language therapists working in Daegu and Gyeongbuk. For data analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and correlation analysis were performed using the SPSS/PC 21.0 statistical program according to the purpose of the study. As a result of the study, the relationship between empathy ability and job satisfaction was found to be high, and there was a high correlation between cognitive and emotional empathy ability, which is a sub-factor of empathy ability, and job satisfaction. Therefore, follow-up research is needed to identify the empathy and job satisfaction about nationwide speech and language therapists for implementing various education programs and improving empathy skills in the future.
