  • The objective of this study is to classify the conversations in Chinese textbooks into four social units (speech community, speech situation, speech event, speech act) adopted by Dell Hymes (1972), and suggest application of the results involving the conversation to the curriculum of Chinese education. Towards this end, this study assumes every conversation in the Chinese textbooks as coordination of specific speech events and acts under specific situations. This study introduces the concept of social unit adopted by Dell Hymes (1972), and elucidates their role in conversation. Thus, this study reconsiders the conversations recorded in the textbooks not from a morphological or syntactic viewpoint but from a speech perspective. Finally, this study suggests effective use of the results in the Chinese conversation classes.

  • Researches into robust recognition in noise environments, especially in car environments, are being carried out actively in speech community. In this paper we will report on three types of corpora that SiTEC (Speech Information TEchnology & industry promotion Center) has created for research into speech recognition in car noise environments. The first is the recordings of 900 Korean native speakers, distributed according to gender, age, and region, who uttered application words in car environments. The second is the collections of mixed noise in 3 car types by model while setting up various noise patterns which can be obtained with the car engine on or off, at different driving speed, and in different road conditions with windows open or closed. The third is the recordings of simulated speech by HATS (Head and Torso Simulator) in car environments with the internal and external noise factors added. These three types of recordings were all made through synchronized 8 channel microphones that are fixed in a car. The creation and applications of these corpora will be reported on in detail.

  • This paper describes the development of the Korean corpus of spontaneous speech, also called the Seoul corpus. The corpus contains the audio recording of the interview-style spontaneous speech from the 40 native speakers of Seoul Korean. The talkers are divided into four age groups; talkers in their teens, twenties, thirties and forties. Each age group has ten talkers, five males and five females. The method used to elicit and record the speech is described. The corpus containing around 220,000 phrasal words was phonemically labeled along with information on the boundaries for Korean phrasal words and utterances, which were additionally romanized. According to the test result of labeling consistency, the inter-labeler agreement on phoneme identification was 98.1% and the mean deviation on boundary placement was 9.04 msec. The corpus will be made available for free to the research community in March, 2015.

  • Background Shortage of speech and language therapists results in lack of speech services. The aims of this study were to find the effectiveness of a combination speech therapy model at Level IV: General speech and language pathologist (GSLP) and Level V: Specific speech and language pathologist (SSLP) in reduction of the number of articulation errors and promotion the quality of life (QoL) for children with cleft palate with or without cleft lip (CP ± L). Methods Fifteen children with CP ± L, aged 4 years 1 month to 10 years 9 months (median = 76 months; minimum:maximum = 49:129 months) were enrolled in this study. Pre- and post-assessment included oral peripheral examination; articulation tests via Articulation Screening Test, Thai Universal Parameters of Speech Outcomes for People with Cleft Palate, Hearing Evaluation, The World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief_Thai (WHOQOL-BRIEF-THAI) version questionnaire for QoL were performed. Speech therapy included a 3-day intensive speech camp by SSLP, five 30-minute speech therapy sessions by a GSLP, and five 1-day follow-up speech camps by SSLP that provided four 45-minute speech therapy sessions for each child. Results Post-articulation revealed statistically significant reduction of the numbers of articulation errors at word, sentence, and screening levels (median difference [MD] = 3, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2-5; MD = 6, 95% CI = 4.5-8; MD = 2.25, 95% CI = 1.5-3, respectively) and improvement of QoL. Conclusion A speech task force consisting of a combination of Level IV: GSLP and Level V: SSLP could significantly reduce the number of articulation errors and promote QoL.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between conversational function and question type in mothers' utterances and their infant's language development. The subjects were 20 infants from 1;07 to 1;11 years of age in Yanji, China. Each child's spontaneous natural speech during interaction with his/her mother was videotaped for about 30 minutes. The children and their mother's spontaneous utterances were transcribed and coded for the number of type and token of word, grammatical morpheme conversational function and type of question in mother's language input to her child. The result showed that mothers used questions as the most frequent conversational function with their infants. The number of questions in conversational function in mothers' utterances positively correlated with the type of word, type of morpheme and grammatical morpheme in infants' utterance. However, there was no correlation between mothers' language input and infant early language development.

  • Despite intensive therapy, a large proportion of stroke survivors are left with significant disabilities. To improve the disable condition, a major component of stroke management is aimed at facilitating functional independence and community reintegration. There are many evidences that community-based rehabilitation after stroke is most effective when provided by a well-organized multidisciplinary team. Key to the implementation of community-based rehabilitation(CBR) is that the disabled person, their family and their community decide on what the priorities of the service should be. The stroke patients in the community need a wide range of services, including the traditional rehabilitation services of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, social workers, orthotists, nurses and so on. The purpose of this research was to investigate necessity and methods of community-based rehabilitation system in Korea.

  • Since Philipp Reis succeeded in sending human voices through electric wires well ahead of Elisha Gray and A. G. Bell etc., he deserves to be acknowledged as the inventor of the telephone. Nevertheless, he did not enjoy any honor for his great invention while he was alive. Since he was working in a scientific community, his work was presented not as a patentable invention but as a scientific discovery. In addition, he used the intermittent electricity in accordance with the experimental tradition in European acoustics, occasioning the speech quality of his telephone to have a fatal shortcoming. On the contrary, Bell, who was a novice in electricity and acoustics, employed variable currents to transmit the sound signals, which guaranteed better speech qualities than Reis's.
