An imaging spectrograph concept optimized for extended far-ultraviolet emission sources is presented. Although the design was originally developed for FIMS aboard the first Korean science satellite STSAT-l launched on September 27, 2003, no rigorous theoretical background of the spectrograph design has been published. The spectrograph design employs an off-axis parabolic cylinder mirror in front of a slit that guides lights to a diffraction grating. The concave grating provides moderate spatial resolution over a large field of view. This mapping capability is absent in most astronomical instruments but is crucial to the understanding of the nature of a variety of astrophysical phenomena. The aberration theory presented in this paper can be extended to holographic gratings in order to improve the spatial as well as the spectral resolutions.
Polarization is a basic property of light and is fundamentally linked to the internal geometry of a source of radiation. Polarimetry complements photometric, spectroscopic, and imaging analyses of sources of radiation and has made possible multiple astrophysical discoveries. In this article I review (i) the physical basics of polarization: electromagnetic waves, photons, and parameterizations; (ii) astrophysical sources of polarization: scattering, synchrotron radiation, active media, and the Zeeman, Goldreich-Kylafis, and Hanle effects, as well as interactions between polarization and matter (like birefringence, Faraday rotation, or the Chandrasekhar-Fermi effect); (iii) observational methodology: on-sky geometry, influence of atmosphere and instrumental polarization, polarization statistics, and observational techniques for radio, optical, and $X/{\gamma}$ wavelengths; and (iv) science cases for astronomical polarimetry: solar and stellar physics, planetary system bodies, interstellar matter, astrobiology, astronomical masers, pulsars, galactic magnetic fields, gamma-ray bursts, active galactic nuclei, and cosmic microwave background radiation.

Cobalt oxide has excellent various properties such as high catalytic activity, antiferromagnetism, and electrochromism. So cobalt oxides offer a great potential for their applications in the various areas such as optical gas sensor, catalysts for oxidation reaction, electrochromic devices, high temperature solar selective absorbers, magnetic materials, pigment for glasses and ceramics, and negative electrodes for lithium-ion batteries. We have synthesized novel cobalt complexes by simple reaction of cobalt bistrimethylsilylamide as a starting material with a lot of conventional ligands as potential cobalt oxide precursors. The studies include the facile preparation, structural characterization, and spectroscopic analysis of the new precursors. We are making efforts to grow cobalt oxide thin films using cobalt complexes newly synthesized in this study using deposition techniques.
Recently, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy have received keen interest as powerful techniques for nondestructive analysis of biological materials. The purpose of this review paper is to compare the advantages of NIR and Raman spectroscopy in the nondestructive analysis. Both methods are quite unique and often complementary. For example. NIR spectroscopy is very useful in monitoring in situ the content of components inside biological materials while Raman spectroscopy is very suitable for identifying micro-components on the surface of biological materials. In this article specific characters of the two spectroscopic methods are discussed first and then several examples of applications of NIR and Raman spectroscopy to the biological nondestructive analysis are introduced.

In the present study, three morpholine substituted crystal violet lactone (CVL) have been synthesized to monitor the thermochromic property. This work is explaining the role of substituent on the lactone ring. The methyl substituents induced greater chromic effects than the chloro substituents. Furthermore, the three-component mixtures that contained CVL, bisphenol-A, and methyl stearate were used to analyse the thermochromic effect of the CVLs as bulk samples with various temperature. The thermochromic properties of the CVLs were evaluated using solid-state UV-Vis and FT-IR spectroscopic techniques. Finally, one of the synthesized CVL has been successfully converted into the form of a test paper similar to pH paper for use as thermal indicators.
The ethanolic extracts of two shallow water sponge species collected from the Aegean Sea afforded thirteen terpenoids in total, two of which were determined to be new. The structure elucidation of the terpenoids was carried out by spectroscopic techniques and comparison with related authentic compounds. The terpenoids have also been assayed for antibacterial activity. This is the first report about the metabolites isolated from the marine sponges of the Aegean Sea in Turkey.

Tiliacora racemosa Colebr. belonging to the family Menispermaceae is the biggest store-house of diphenyl bisbenzylisoquinoline (DBBI) alkaloids. Exhaustive chemical processing of the root of T. racemosa by the application of modern separation techniques yielded a DBBI alkaloid which was identified as tiliacorine using sophisticated spectroscopic methods (UV, IR, $1^H-NMR$, Mass). Tiliacorine potentiated the sleeping time induced by standard hypnotics viz. chlorpromazine (CPZ), pentobarbitone (PB) and diazepam (DZ) in a dose dependent manner. Tiliacorine potentiated the analgesic action of standard analgesic agents viz., morphine and meperidine. It was also found to possess anti convulsive activity in the strychnine induced convulsion model.

Compared to their terrestrial and marine counterparts, little is known about the capacity of freshwater-derived actinomycete bacteria to produce novel secondary metabolites. In the current study, we highlight the disparities that exist between cultivation-independent and -dependent analyses of actinomycete communities from four locations in Lake Michigan sediment. Furthermore, through phylogenetic analysis of strains isolated from these locations, we identified a Streptomyces sp., strain B025, as being distinct from other Streptomyces spp. isolated from sediment. Upon fermentation this strain produced a rare class of eight-membered lactone secondary metabolites, which have been for their antitumor properties. We used spectroscopic and chemical derivitization techniques to characterize octalactin B (1) in addition to its corresponding novel, unnatural degradation product (2).
Electrochemical properties of self-dopable poly(aniline N-butylsulfonate)s in various acidic medium were investigated by spectroelectrochemical techniques. Cyclic voltammetric study showed more than two reversible process of one electron transfer, the potential and peak intensity of which were dependent on the acid concentration and dopant ion. Spectroscopic study at different oxidation level indicated that the electrochromic switching of the poly(aniline N-alkylsulfonate)s film involves structural changes from benzenoid ring to quinoid ring. Spectrocyclic voltammetry together with impedance spectra of the PANBUS film in 0.1 M $LiClO_4$ solution of acetonitrile containing 0.46 M of perchloric acid showed two types of highly conductive states at the intermediate oxidation levels, which can be related to the metallic polaron states doped by two different process.

The interaction between curcumin(1,7-bis[4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl]-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione) and ethylamines was studied in DMSO:$H_2O$(5:1, v/v) using absorption and fluorescence measurements. The association constant, $K_{ass}$, and the Stern-Volmer constants were calculated by the Benesi-Hildebrand and Stern-Volmer equation, respectively. Curcumin displayed marked UV-Vis absorption changes and highly responsive fluorescence quenching in the presence of ethylamine and the quenching ability was enhanced almost linearly with the concentration of ethylamines. The apparent Stern-Volmer constant measured for the ethylamine-curcumin system was about 1000-fold greater than that of the triethylamine-curcumin system, indicating considerably greater quenching efficiency of ethylamines.
