Electronic Structure of the Tris(8-quinolinolato)aluminum (III) ($Alq_3$) / Ba Interfaces and Light Out-coupling Characteristics of Organic Light-emitting Diodes Based on these Interfaces

  • We investigated the device performance for organic light-emitting characteristics based on the electron-injecting interfacial characteristics of Ba deposited on tris(8-quinolinolato)aluminum (III) ($Alq_3$) with a change of a Ba coverage. The device performance of organic light-emitting diodes with Ba coverage of 1 nm significantly improved by the lowering of the electron-injecting barrier height that was induced by electronic charge transfer. However, the device with Ba coverage above 1 nm showed poor device performance. The spectroscopic results indicated that the $Alq_3$ molecules started to decompose by the reaction between Ba and the phenoxide moiety of the molecule.

A study on the long-term stability of dye-sensitized solar cells with different electrolyte systems

  • The dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have achieved so far the highest validated efficiency over 11%. However, the cells with the best performance utilize volatile solvent as a electrolyte, which can cause some practical limitations for the long-term operation. This is one of the most substantial problems to be resolved for the commercialization of DSSCs. In order to improve the long-term stability, many research groups have reported new electrolyte system, to replace the liquid type electrolyte by non-volatile ones. In this work, we studied long-term stability of the DSSCs with various types of electrolytes such as (PVDF HFP) based polymer, eutectic melts of ionic liquids, and liquid based solvent. The cells with various electrolytes have been exposed to the condition under thermal stress and illumination over 1000 hours. We will report the change of photovoltaic properties with time and investigate the degradation mechanism with the impedance spectroscopic analysis.

A Recombinant Human ${\alpha}_1$-Antitrypsin Variant, $M_{malton}$, Undergoes a Spontaneous Conformational Conversion into a Latent Form

  • Many genetic variants of ${\alpha}_1$-antitrypsin have been associated with early onset emphysema and liver cirrhosis. However, the detailed structural basis of pathogenic ${\alpha}_1$-antitrypsin molecules is rarely known. Here we found that a recombinant $M_{malton}$ variant (Phe52-deleted) lost inhibitory activity by spontaneous conformational conversion into a more stable, inactive form under physiological conditions. Biochemical and spectroscopic data suggested that the variant converts into a reactive center loop-inserted conformation, resembling the latent form of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1.

  • We report here that under strong attacksof external $CH_4$ guest molecules the sII and sH methane hydrates are structurally transformed to the crystalline me framework of sI, leading to favorable change of the lattice dimension of the host-guest networks. The High Power Decoupling $^{13}C$ NMR and Raman spectroscopies were used to identify structure transitions of the mixed $CH_4+C_2H_6$ hydrates (sIIl) and hydrocarbons (methylcyclohexane, isopentane) + $CH_4$ hydrates (sH). The resulting spectra indicate that most of the synthesized sII and sH hydrates were transformed to methane hydrate of sl under 110 bar and particularly the coexistence of sl with sII or sH appear according to the surrounding methane-rich gas conditions. The present findings might be expected to Provide rational evidences regarding the preponderant occurrence of naturally-occurring sI methane hydrates in marine sediments.

Molecular Switching Coordination Polymers. 4.4'-Chalcogenobispyridine Bridged Cobalt Benzoquinone Complexes

  • The reaction of Co2(CO)8 with 3,6-di-tert-butyl-1,2-benzoquinone in the presence of the respective 4,4'-chalcogenobispyridine results in the coordination polymers of [CoⅢ(4,4'-X(Py)2)(DBSQ)(DBCat)]n (X=S, Se, Te; Py=pyridine; DBSQ=3,6-di-tert-butylsemiquinone; DBCat=3,6-di-tert-butylcatechol). The title compounds undergo an intramolecular Cat → Co electron transfer, and thus change toward the [CoⅡ(4,4'-X(Py)2)(DBSQ)2]n at elevated temperature. The temperature-switching properties of the compounds directly depend upon the electronegativity of the chalcogen atom of the 4,4'-chalcogenobispyridine coligands. The spectroscopic data disclose that the properties of [CoⅢ(4,4'-S(Py)2)(DBSQ)(DBCat)]n and [CoⅢ(4,4'-Se(Py)2)(DBSQ)(DBCat)]n are similar each other in contrast to those of [CoⅢ(4,4'-Te(Py)2)(DBSQ)(DBCat)]n.

Conformation of Single Stranded Poly(dA) and Its Interaction with 4',6-Diamidino-2-phenylindole

  • We studied the interaction of 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) with single stranded poly(dA) using optical spectroscopic methods, including absorption, circular dichroism (CD), and fluorescence spectroscopy. The temperature-dependent conformation of poly(dA) was also investigated. The conformation of poly(dA) varied with temperature, which is explained by the stacking-destacking process of the adenine bases, resulting from the sugar conformation. The hypochromicity and red-shift in the absorption spectroscopy, the lack of CD change in the drag absorption region, and the fluorescence behavior, especially a great accessibility of the I2 quencher to the poly(dA)-bound DAPI, suggest that DAPI binds to the outside of poly(dA). The Job plot for the DAPI-poly(dA) mixture demonstrated that a stoichiometry of one DAPI molecule binds to the one phosphate of poly(dA).

The Pressure Effect on the Ionization of m-Chloroanilinium Ion in Sodiumacetate Buffer Solution

  • The dissociation constants(K) of m-chloroanilinium ion in water-ethanol mixture, where the volume percentage of water is 89.5%, were evaluated by UV-spectroscopic method at $20{\sim}50^{\circ}C$, up to 1500 bars with changing ionic strength from 0.04 to 0.10 mol $kg^{-1}$ by use of acetate buffer. K values enhance with increasing ionic strength and temperature, but decrease with elevating pressure. From K values, we obtained the partial molar volume change and some other thermodynamic parameters. From the values of enthalpy, entropy and isoequilibrium temperature (649 K), we concluded that the dissociation of m-chloroanilinium ion mentioned above is controlled by enthalpy.

A spectroscopic study of the effect of humidity on the atmospheric pressure helium plasma jets

  • Atmospheric-pressure plasma has a great potential in many applications due to its simplicity rather than low pressure plasmas. In material processing, biomedical applications, and many other applications, the input power, gas flow rate, and the geometry of electrode have been mainly considered and studied as important external parameters of atmospheric-pressure plasma control. Besides, since the atmospheric-pressure plasmas are typically generated in an open air, the relative humidity is difficult to control and can change day by day. Therefore, the relative humidity cannot be ignored for plasmas. Thus, in this work, the atmospheric-pressure plasma jet was characterized by changing relative humidity, and it was found that the increase in electron density and OH radicals are due to Penning ionization between helium metastable and water vapors at higher humidity condition.

Spatial Variations of Chemical Abundances in The Galactic Disk

  • We present spatial variations of chemical abundances ([Fe/H] and [α/Fe]) in the Galactic disk, using a large number of dwarfs and giants from Large Sky Area Multi-object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). Specifically, we investigate how the metallicity distribution function (MDF) and the alpha abundance distribution function (ADF) change with the distance from the Galactic center to understand the chemical evolution history of the Galactic disk. We also study the difference (if any) in the MDF and ADF between dwarfs and giants to provide valuable clues to the formation history of the Galactic disk.

  • 상변화형 광디스크의 보호막으로 사용되는 $ZnS-SiO_2$ 유전체막을 RF magnetron 스퍼트링방법에 의하여 제조하는 경우에 기판 바이어스전압의 영향을 조사하기 위하여, 알곤가스 분위기에서 ZnS(80mol%)-$SiO_2$(20mol%)타겟을 사용하여 Si Wafer와 Corning flass 위에 박막을 증착시켰다. 본 실험에서는 여러 실험 변수를 효과적으로 조절하면서 실험의 양을 줄이고 도시의 산포를 동시에 만족시키는 최적조건으로 타겟 RF 출력 200W, 기판 RF 출력 20W, 아르곤 압력 5mTorr과 증착시간 20분을 얻을 수 있었으며, 신뢰구간 95%에서 확인실험을 수행하였다. 증착된 박막의 열적 저항성을 측정하기 위해 $300^{\circ}C$$600^{\circ}C$에서 열처리시험을 수행하였고, Spectroscopic Ellipsometry 측정을 통한 광학적 데이터를 바탕으로 Bruggeman EMA(Effective Medium Approximation)방법을 이용하여 기공(void)분률을 측정하였다. 본 연구결과에 의하면 특성치 굴절률에 대하여 기판 바이어스인자와 증착시간 사이에는 서로 교호작용이 강하게 존재함을 확인할 수 있었다. TEM분석과 XRD 분석 결과에 의하면 기판 바이어스를 가한 최적조건에서 증착된 미세조직은 기존의 바이어스를 가하지 않을 조건에서 증착시킨 박막보다 미세한 구조를 가지며, 또한 과도한 바이어스전압은 결정구조의 조대화를 야기시켰다. 그리고 적절한 바이어스전압은 박막의 밀도를 증가시키며, 기공분률을 약 3.7%정도 감소시킴을 확인할 수 있었다.
