As a study for the verification of heat treated wood according to ISPM No. 15, the spectroscopic characteristics of the heat treated wood surface were analyzed. Various functional groups were observed on the IR spectrum, but it was difficult to find any particular difference between wood species, heat treatment time and storage period. HBI (hydrogen-bonding intensity) shows the change of the heat treated wood according to the storage time, but the change of wood with the heat treatment time was hard to be observed. On the PCA score plot, however, it was possible to sort the wood according to the heat treatment time of 60 minutes or 90 minutes in the species. The standards for classification of heat-treated wood in PCA were aromatic rings in lignin and C-H bending in cellulose, and these components were able to classify heat-treated wood by ISPM No. 15.
The luminescence and fluorescence were investigated by photoluminescence spectroscopy for six gemstones which exhibit color change effect. The shape of luminescence peaks appears different when observed by a photoluminescence spectroscopewith a 514 nm Ar laser source. However, it was not possible to observe the difference in the spectra between the natural and synthetic origins for the same type of gemstones. It was found that the photoluminescence spectrum was related to the crystal structure of the stones. Photoluminescence spectra using a 325 nm He-Cd source reveal that fluorescence is relatively strong for synthetic alexandrite, synthetic color change sapphire and natural alexandrite comparing to the rest of gemstones examined.

The photosensitive properties and spectroscopic characteristics in the organic photoconductor(OPC) with carrier generation layer(CGL) of poly(vinylbutyral)(PVB) and polycarbonate(PC) doped with titanyl phthalocyanine(TiOPc) were investigated. The change of crystal structure of TiOPc dispersed with PVB and PC was shown by UV-visible reflective spectrum and FT-IR spectrum and mainly caused by the difference of solubility of solvent and the interaction between TiOPc and binder. The particle size of TiOPc dispersed with PVB measured by SEM was smaller than in PC. The crystal structure of TiOPc dispersed with PVB was amorphous type and in PC was $\alpha$type. It was found that the photosensitive properties of OPC were dependent on the change of absorbance and ionization potential of TiOPc occurred from the difference of crystal structure. In this work, the photosensitivity of OPC of TiOPc dispersed with PVB was better than PC due to the crystal type and the smaller particle size.

The cryogenic ball milling was performed on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at an extremely low temperature to increase the dispersion of CNTs. The effects of milling speed and time on the deagglomeration and structural changes of CNTs were studied. FESEM was used to analyze the dispersion and the change of particle size before and after milling process. Transmission electron microscopic (TEM) analysis was also investigated the effect of cryogenic ball milling on the morphological characteristics of CNTs. The structural changes by the cryogenic ball milling process were further confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopic analysis. The results showed that the agglomeration of CNTs was significantly reduced and amorphous structure was observed at high milling speed. However, the milling time has no great effect on the dispersion property and structural change of CNTs compared with milling speed.

AlSb is a promising material for optical devices, particularly for high-frequency and nonlinear-optical applications. And AlSb offers significant potential for devices such as quantum-well lasers, laser diodes, and heterojunction bipolar transistors. In this work we study molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth of an unstrained AISb film on a GaAs substrate and identify the real-time monitoring capabilities of in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). The samples were fabricated on semi-insulating (0 0 1) GaAs substrates using MBE system. A rotating sample stage ensured uniform film growth. The substrate was first heated to $620^{\circ}C$ under As2 to remove surface oxides. A GaAs buffer layer approximately 200 nm- thick was then grown at $580^{\circ}C$. During the temperature changing process from $580^{\circ}C$ to $530^{\circ}C$, As2 flux is maintained with the shutter for Ga being closed and the reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) pattern remaining at ($2{\times}4$). Upon reaching the preset temperature of $530^{\circ}C$, As shutter was promptly closed with Sb shutter open, resulting in the change of RHEED pattern from ($2{\times}4$) to ($1{\times}3$). This was followed by the growth of AlSb while using a rotating-compensator SE with a charge-coupled-device (CCD) detector to obtain real-time SE spectra from 0.74 to 6.48 eV. Fig. 1 shows the real time measured SE spectra of AlSb on GaAs in growth process. In the Fig. 1 (a), a change of ellipsometric parameter ${\Delta}$ is observed. The ${\Delta}$ is the parameter which contains thickness information of the sample, and it changes in a periodic from 0 to 180o with growth. The significant change of ${\Delta}$ at~0.4 min means that the growth of AlSb on GaAs has been started. Fig. 1b shows the changes of dielectric function with time over the range 0.74~6.48 eV. These changes mean phase transition from pseudodielectric function of GaAs to AlSb at~0.44 min. Fig. 2 shows the observed RHEED patterns in the growth process. The observed RHEED pattern of GaAs is ($2{\times}4$), and the pattern changes into ($1{\times}3$) with starting the growth of AlSb. This means that the RHEED pattern is in agreement with the result of SE measurements. These data show the importance and sensitivity of SE for real-time monitoring for materials growth by MBE. We performed the real-time monitoring of AlSb growth by using SE measurements, and it is good agreement with the results of RHEED pattern. This fact proves the importance and the sensitivity of SE technique for the real-time monitoring of film growth by using ellipsometry. We believe that these results will be useful in a number of contexts including more accurate optical properties for high speed device engineering.
In this study, we measured the chemical shift change of metabolite peaks in the brain-metabolite phantom according to the temperature variation using nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR). The temperature range in NMR system was controled from 25 to 80 (5 step) by internal temperature controller. Temperature coefficients of each metabolite peaks were also calculated from the measured chemical shift depending on the temperature. The chemical shift changes depending on temperature were validated by linear regression method for each metabolite peaks. The temperature coefficients of $_{tot}Cr$, Cho, Cr, NAA, and Lac were 0.0086, 0.0088, 0.0091, 0.0089, and 0.0088ppm/$^{\circ}C$, respectively. This study shows that chemical shift change of brain metabolite and temperature variation have linear relationship each other. This also makes authors believe that brain temperature measurement is possible using MR spectroscopic imaging technique.

Systematic study on relationship between celadon coloring and glaze component was conducted by chromaticity analysis and M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopic analysis. The chromaticity ($L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ values) and M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer analysis results were correlated to the amount of $Fe_2O_3$, $TiO_2$, MnO, and $P_2O_5$, which are the essential factors influencing celadon coloring. According to chromaticity analysis, celadon glaze color belongs to GY group when the addition of $TiO_2$ was 1.4%, whereas the color belongs to BG group when the addition of $TiO_2$ was 0.1%. For the GY group, the colors change from GY to YR with the decrease of brightness as the addition of $TiO_2$, MnO, and $P_2O_5$ increases. According to M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer analysis results, as the amount of divalent iron ion increases, the $a^*$ and $b^*$ values decrease, on the other hand, $L^*$ value increases. The ratio of divalent iron ion produced in reductive sintering process is found to be 80~95% in this study, which induces the increase of $L^*$ values in celadon glaze.

Dynamical analysis of compact groups provides important tests of models of compact group formation and evolution. By compiling 2066 redshifts from FLWO/FAST, from the literature, and from SDSS DR12 in the fields of compact groups in , we construct the largest sample of compact groups with complete spectroscopic redshifts in the redshift range 0.01 < z < 0.22. This large redshift sample shows that the interloper fraction in the compact group candidates is ~ 42%. A secure sample of 332 compact groups includes 192 groups with four or more member galaxies and 140 groups with three members. The fraction of early-type galaxies in these compact groups is 62%, higher than for the original Hickson compact groups. The velocity dispersions of early-and late-type galaxies in compact groups change little with groupcentric radius; the radii sampled are less than 100 h−1 kpc, smaller than the radii typically sampled by members of massive clusters of galaxies. The physical properties of our sample compact groups include size, number density, velocity dispersion, and local environment; these properties slightly differ from those derived for the original Hickson compact groups and for the DPOSS II compact groups. Differences result from subtle differences in the way the group candidates were originally selected. The abundance of the compact groups changes little with redshift over the range covered by this sample. The approximate constancy of the abundance for this sample is a potential constraint on the evolution of compact groups on a few Gigayear timescale.

We have conducted a 22 GHz very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) survey of 281 local (z < 0.05) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) selected from the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) 70-month ultra hard X-ray (14-195 keV) catalog. The main goal is to investigate the relation between the strengths of black hole accretion and the parsec-scale nuclear jet, which is expected to tightly correlate but has not been observationally confirmed yet. The BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) provides the least biased AGN sample against obscuration including both Seyfert types, hence it makes an ideal parent sample for studying the nuclear jet properties of an overall AGN population. Using the Korean VLBI Network (KVN), the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA), and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), we observed 281 objects with a 22 GHz flux > 30 mJy, detecting 11 targets (~4% of VLBI detection rate). This implies that the fraction of X-ray AGNs which are currently ejecting a strong nuclear jet is very small. Although our 11 sources span a wide range of pc-scale morphological types, from compact to complex, they lie on a tight linear relation between accretion luminosity and nuclear jet luminosity. Our finding may indicate that the power of nuclear jet is directly responsible for the amount of black hole accretion. We also have probed the fundamental plane of black hole activity in VLBI scale (e.g., few milli-arcsecond). The results from our high-frequency VLBI radio study support that the change of jet luminosity and size follows what is predicted by the AGN evolution scenario based on the Eddington ratio (ƛ$_{Edd}$) - column density ($N_H$) plane, proposed by a previous study.

Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate alloys spectrophotometrically including yttrium of nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr) alloys, which are used as substitutes for the regulation of beryllium and provide helpful improvements in Ni-Cr alloys. Methods: Four groups of specimens (ZN, ZY, SN and EM) were prepared for analysis. Color parameters were measured with a spectrophotometer, and color difference (∆E*) was calculated. The t-test and one-way analysis of variance test were used to determine significant difference, and the Tukey test was used to identify where the differences were. To measure the spectroscopic reflectivity, the spectroscopic reflectance was measured and converted into CIE L*, a*, b* color system. Results: The ∆E* value of each metal ceramic group after opaque firing of Ni-Cr alloy with and without yttrium was <2, and the total group color difference (∆E*) was below 1 in the dentin ceramic all experimental group. However, the a* and b* values of the metal ceramic groups were higher than that in the lithium disilicate all ceramic group, and the chroma was higher than the natural tooth. The brightness of all experimental groups was similar to that of the shade guide sample. Conclusion: Yttrium added to Ni-Cr alloys showed similar CIE L*, a*, b* values to Ni-Cr alloys that did not contain yttrium, indicating that yttrium had no effect on color in metallic ceramic systems.
