  • Vibration-based Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems use field measurements of operational signals, which are distorted by noise from many sources. Reducing this noise allows a more accurate assessment of the original "clean" signal and improves analysis results. The implementation of a noise reduction methodology for the Modal Distribution Method (MDM) is reported here. The spectral subtraction method is a popular broadband noise reduction technique used in speech signal processing. Its basic principle is to subtract the magnitude of the noise from the total noisy signal in the frequency domain. The underlying assumption of the method is that noise is additive and uncorrelated with the signal. In speech signal processing, noise can be measured when there is no signal. In the MDM, however, the magnitude of the noise profile can be estimated only from the magnitude of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) at higher frequencies than the frequency range of the true signal associated with structural vibrations under the additional assumption of white noise. The implementation of the spectral subtraction method to MDM may decrease the energy of the individual mode. In this work, a modification of the spectral subtraction method is introduced that enables the conservation of the energies of individual modes. The main difference is that any (negative) bars with a height below zero after subtraction are set to the absolute value of their height. Both noise reduction methods are implemented in the MDM, and an application example is presented that demonstrates its effectiveness when used with a signal corrupted by noise.

  • In the middle-resolution remote sensing, the Ground Sampled Distance (GSD) that the detector senses and samples is generally larger than the actual size of the objects (or materials) of interest, and so several objects are embedded in a single pixel. In this case, as it is impossible to detect these objects by the conventional spatial-based image processing techniques, it has to be carried out at sub-pixel level through spectral properties. In this paper, we explain the sub-pixel analysis algorithm, also known as the Linear Spectral Mixing (LSM) model, which has been experimented using the Hyperion data. To find Endmembers used as the prior knowledge for LSM model, we applied the concept of the convex geometry on the two-dimensional scatter plot. The Atmospheric Correction and Minimum Noise Fraction techniques are presented for the pre-processing of Hyperion data. As LSM model is the simplest approach in sub-pixel analysis, the results of our experiment is not good. But we intend to say that the sub-pixel analysis shows much more information in comparison with the image classification.

  • Motivation of this study is based on these two aspects: geologic uses of ASTER and application scheme of Spectral Mixture Analysis. This study aims at geologic mapping for mineral exploration using ASTER and LANDSAT 7 ETM+ at Mongolian plateau region by SMA. After basic pre-processing such as the normalization, geometric corrections and calibration of reflectance, related to endmembers selection and spectral signature deviation, both methods using spectral library and using PPI(Pixel Purity Index) are performed and compared on a given task. Based on these schemes, SMA is performed using LANDSAT 7 ETM+ and ASTER image. As the results, fraction map showing geologic rock types are enough to meet purposes such as geologic mapping and mineral potential mapping in the case of both uses of these different types of remotely sensed images. It concluded that this approach based on SMA with LANDSAT and ASTER is regarded as one of effective schemes for geologic remote sensing.

  • This paper presents the Korean digit recognition method under noise environment using the spectral mapping training based on static supervised adaptation algorithm. In the presented recognition method, as a result of spectral mapping from one space of noisy speech spectrum to another space of speech spectrum without noise, spectral distortion of noisy speech is improved, and the recognition rate is higher than that of the conventional method using VQ and DTW without noise processing, and even when SNR level is 0 dB, the recognition rate is 10 times of that using the conventional method. It has been confirmed that the spectral mapping training has an ability to improve the recognition performance for speech in noise environment.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to determine internal structure spectral profile of by-products from coffee processing that were affected by added-microorganism fermentation duration in relation to truly absorbed feed nutrient supply in ruminant system. Methods: The by-products from coffee processing were fermented using commercial fermentation product, consisting of various microorganisms: for 0 (control), 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. In this study, carbohydrate-related spectral profiles of coffee by-products were correlated with their chemical and nutritional properties (chemical composition, total digestible nutrient, bioenergy values, carbohydrate sub-fractions and predicted degradation and digestion parameters as well as milk value of feed). The vibrational spectra of coffee by-products samples after fermentation for 0 (control), 7, 14, 21, and 28 days were determined using a JASCO FT/IR-4200 spectroscopy coupled with accessory of attenuated total reflectance (ATR). The molecular spectral analyses with univariate approach were conducted with the OMNIC 7.3 software. Results: Molecular spectral analysis parameters in fermented and non-fermented by-products from coffee processing included structural carbohydrate, cellulosic compounds, non-structural carbohydrates, lignin compound, CH-bending, structural carbohydrate peak1, structural carbohydrate peak2, structural carbohydrate peak3, hemicellulosic compound, non-structural carbohydrate peak1, non-structural carbohydrate peak2, non-structural carbohydrate peak3. The study results show that added-microorganism fermentation induced chemical and nutritional changes of coffee by-products including carbohydrate chemical composition profiles, bioenergy value, feed milk value, carbohydrate subfractions, estimated degradable and undegradable fractions in the rumen, and intestinal digested nutrient supply in ruminant system. Conclusion: In conclusion, carbohydrate nutrition value changes by added-microorganism fermentation duration were in an agreement with the change of their spectral profile in the coffee by-products. The studies show that the vibrational ATR-FT/IR spectroscopic technique could be applied as a rapid analytical tool to evaluate fermented by-products and connect with truly digestible carbohydrate supply in ruminant system.

  • This paper introduces a signal processing technique for discrimination of missile target. In order to detect and discriminate the target, a seeker radar makes use of chirp waveform and stretch processing to generate high resolution range profiles(HRRPs). RELAX(relaxation) algorithm, which is one of the spectral estimation techniques, was used to find scattering centers of a missile from HRRP. From the information on the distribution of one-dimensional(1-D) scattering centers on a target, we can discriminate the target without noise.

  • Manual grading and sorting of red-ginsengs are inherently unreliable due to its subjective nature. A computerized technique based on optical and geometrical characteristics was studied for the objective quality evalution. Spectral reflectance of three categories of red-ginsengs - "Chunsam", "Chisam", "Yangsam" - were measured and analyzed. Variation of reflectance among parts of a single ginseng was more significant than variation among the quality categories of ginsengs. A PC-based image processing algorithm was developed to extract geometrical features such as length and thickness of body, length and number of roots, position of head and branch point, etc. The algorithm consisted of image segmentation, calculation of Euclidean distance, skeletonization and feature extraction. Performance of the algorithm was evaluated using sample ginseng images and found to be mostly sussessful.

  • We present a hybrid method for spectral reflectivity recovery, using 3D extrapolation as a supplemental method for 3D interpolation. The proposed 3D extrapolation is an extended version of 3D interpolation based on the barycentric algorithm. It is faster and more accurate than the conventional spectral-recovery techniques of principal-component analysis and nonnegative matrix transformation. Four different extrapolation techniques (based on nearest neighbors, circumcenters, in-centers, and centroids) are formulated and applied to recover spectral reflectivity. Under the standard conditions of a D65 illuminant and 1964 $10^{\circ}$ observer, all reflectivity data from 1269 Munsell color chips are successfully reconstructed. The superiority of the proposed method is demonstrated using statistical data to compare coefficients of correlation and determination. The proposed hybrid method can be applied for fast and accurate spectral reflectivity recovery in image processing.
