In satellite spectra, Though the magnitude varies with intensity of sunstroke, dip angle of land so on, the shape is less deformed with these effects. from this point of view, we have developed a spectral shape-dependent analysis utilizing a normalization procedure by the spectral integral and applied it to Landsat/TM spectra. Inevitable topographic and atmospheric effects can be suppressed. The correction algorithm is very simple and timesaving and the suppression of topographic effects is especially effective. Normalized band 4 is almost linear to NDVI values, and is available to the vegetation index.
Correlation between chlorophyll a in the East China Sea and spectral bands (412, 443, 490, (510), 555, (676, 765)nm) of Ocean Scanning Multi-Spectral Imager (OSMI) including the profile multi-spectral radiometer (PRR-800) was studied. The values of remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) at the bands corresponding to the field chlorophyll $\alpha$ in the East China Sea were much higher than those in clear waters off California, USA. In case of the particle absorptions related to the chlorophyll a concentration at the spectral bands (440, 670nm) were much higher in the East China Sea than the ones in the clean waters off California. The normalized water leaving radiances (nLw) at 412, 443, 490, 555 nm of OSMI and the field chlorophyll a in the East China Sea were correlated each other. According to the results, the relationship between field chlorophyll $\alpha$ and nLw 410 nm in OSMI bands was the lowest, whereas that between field chlorophyll a and nLw 555 nm in the bands was the highest. Reciprocal action between the field chlorophyll a and the band ratio of the OSMI bands (nLw410/nLw555, nLw443/nLw555, nLw490/nLw555) was also studied. Relationship between the chlorophyll $\alpha$ and the band ratio (nLw490/nLw555) was highest in the OSMI bands. Relationship between the chlorophyll $\alpha$ and the ratio (nLw490/nLw555) was higher than one in the nLw410/nLw555. The difference in the estimated chlorophyll $\alpha$ (mg/m$^3$) between OSMI and SeaWiFS (Sea Viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor) at the special observing stations in the northern eastern sea of Jeju Island in February 25, 2002 was about less than 0.3 mg/m$^3$ within 3 hours. It is suggested that OC2 (ocean color chlorophyll 2 algorithm) be used to get much better estimation of chlorophyll $\alpha$ from OSMI than the ones from the updated algorithms as OC4.

Owing to its fast computing capability for fusing images, the FIHS(Fast Intensity Hue Saturation) fusion is widely used for fusion purposes. However, the FIHS fusion also distorts color in the same way such as the IHS(Intensity Hue Saturation) fusion technique. In this paper, a FIHS fusion technique(FIHS-BR) which reduces color distortion by using the ratio of each spectral band and an adaptive FIHS fusion(FIHS-SABR) using spatial information and the ratio of each spectral band are proposed. The proposed FIHS-BR fusion reduces color distortion by adding different spatial detail improvement values for each spectral band. The spatial detail improvement values are derived from the ratio of spectral band. And the proposed FIHS-SABR fusion reduces more color distortion by readjusting the spatial detail improvement values for each spectral band according to the ratio of the spectral bands. The spatial detail improvement values are derived adaptively from the characteristics of spatial information of the local image. To evaluate the performance of the proposed FIHS-BR fusion and FIHS-SABR fusion, a computer simulation is performed for IKONOS remote sensing image. Results from the experiments show that the proposed methods have less color distortion for the forest regions which reveal severe color distortion in the traditional FIHS fusion. From the evaluation results of the characteristics of spectral information for fused image, we show that the proposed methods have best results.
We studied the sea level variations at Kerguelen island in the South Indian Ocean with ARGOS data and meteorological data during about 1 year(May 1993~April 1994) through using filter, spectral analysis, coherency and phase, and found characteristics for the two oceanic signal levels(detided oceanic signal level, h$_{detided}$ and seasonal oceanic level, h$_{corr.ib}$). The forms of atmospheric pressure variations are good agreed to between ARGOS data and meteorological data in the observed periods. This Kerguelen area shows the inflow of an air temperature(gain of a radiant heat) into the sea water and the stagnation of high atmospheric pressure bands in summer, and the outflow of a sea water temperature(loss of sensible and latent heat) toward the atmosphere and the stagnation of low atmospheric pressure bands in winter. The seasonal difference of sea level between summer and winter is about 1.6cm. Both the detided oceanic signal level(h$_{detided}$) variation and the inverted barometer level(h$_{ib}$) variation have a strong correlation for T>1day period bands. The characteristics of h$_{detided}$ variation are not decided by the influence of any meteorological distributions (atmospheric pressure), but the influence of other factors(bottom water temperature) for T>2days periods bands. h$_{corr.ib}$ plays a very important role of sea level variation in the observed periods (especially T>about 180days period bands).

Remote sensing cannot provide a direct measurement of vegetation index (VI) but it can provide a reasonably good estimate of vegetation index, defined as the ratio of satellite bands. The monitoring of vegetation in nearby urban regions is made difficult by the low spatial resolution and temporal resolution image captures. In this study, enhancing spatial resolution method is adapted as to improve a low spatial resolution. Recent studies have successfully estimated normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) using improved resolution method such as from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard EOS Terra satellite. Image enhancing spatial resolution is an important tool in remote sensing, as many Earth observation satellites provide both high-resolution and low-resolution multi-spectral images. Examples of enhancement of a MODIS multi-spectral image and a MODIS NDVI image of Cheongju using a Landsat TM high-resolution multi-spectral image are presented. The results are compared with that of the IHS technique is presented for enhancing spatial resolution of multi-spectral bands using a higher resolution data set. To provide a continuous monitoring capability for NDVI, in situ measurements of NDVI from paddy field was carried out in 2004 for comparison with remotely sensed MODIS data. We compare and discuss NDVI estimates from MODIS sensors and in-situ spectroradiometer data over Ochang plain region. These results indicate that the MODIS NDVI is underestimated by approximately 50%.

In this study, multispectral images of wheat according to soil water state were collected, compared, and analyzed to measure the physiological response of crops to environmental stress at the individual level. CMS-V multi-spectral camera(Silios Technologies) was used for image acquisition. The camera lens consists of eight spectral bands between 550nm and 830nm. Light Reflective information collected in each band sensor and stored in digital values, and it is converted into a reflectance for calculating the vegetation index and used. According to the camera manual, the NDVI(Normalized Difference vegetation index) value was calculated using 628 nm and 752 nm bands. Image measurement was conducted under natural light conditions, and reflectance standards(Labsphere) were captured with plants for reflectance calculation. The wheat variety used Gosomil, and the wheat grown in the field was transplanted into a pot after heading date and measured. Three treatments were performed so that the soil volumetric water content of the pot was 13~17%, 20~23%, and 25%, and the growth response of wheat according to each treatment was compared using the NDVI value. In the first measurement after port transplantation, the difference in NDVI value according to treatment was not significant, but in the subsequent measurement, the NDVI value of the treatment with a water content of 13 to 17% was lowest and was the highest at 20 to 23%. The NDVI values decreased compared to the first measurement in all treatment, and the decrease was the largest at 13-17% water content and the smallest at 20-23%. Although the difference in NDVI values could be confirmed, it would be difficult to directly relate it to the water stress of plants, and further research on the response of crops to environmental stress and the analysis of multi-spectral image will be needed.
The Spacelab 1 data represented the first multiband spectral measuremets of the ${N_2}^{+}$ first negative ion bands system in the thermospheric dayglow, and the first opportunity to make a detailed comparison of the vibrational and rotational distributions over bands out to v'=5. The main purpose of this study was to decuced the excitation processes of ${N_2}^{+}$(1N) bands by determining vibrational population distributions for the upper states of ${N_2}^{+}$(1N). The vibrational population distributions to achieve a best fit to the measured Spacelab 1 data were summarized and also compared with those theoretically derived.
New spectroscopic characteristics of amorphous ferric hydroxide ($Fe(OH)_3$), interestingly in the near infrared (NIR) region, are presented in this study. The absorption spectrum of ferric hydroxide covers wide spectral regions from ultraviolet to NIR (200~900 nm). Unique emission bands were newly observed in the NIR regions (800~1400 nm). Several bands of this NIR emission are quiet well overlapped with the combinational vibrational absorption bands of water. From photothermal conversion study, very interestingly, temperature of aqueous mixture solution including the amorphous ferric hydroxide was significantly increased from ambient temperature to $38^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes under irradiation of a standard helium lamp.
Many ocean color sensors are being operated at present and will be continued to operatein the coming years. However, these ocean color sensors have different spectral bands locations and higher level product algorithms. Thus the continuity of ocean color data from the satellite with different missions will be important for monitoring of oceanographic variation with long term research. In this study, CZCS band and algorithm are compared with OCTS and SeaWiFS algorithm for estimating chlorophyll. Missing bands of OCTS and CZCS for chlorophyll algorithm are estimated by linear-interpolation using SeaWiFS data. We were able to evaluate the effectiveness of the correction methods using linear interpolation method. Surprisingly, linear interpolation gave a better result than those of other bands.
We propose a novel channel-switching transmission filter using segmented chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBG's) each of which has separate transmission bands in the reflection spectrum of the CFBG. The segmented CFBG's are made by using specially designed slits. The separated reflection spectral bands of the segmented CFBG's are controlled by the attached fiber stretchers, and the controlled reflection bands are used to choose the channels independently. Tunability of the transmission spectra is experimentally demonstrated in WDM transmission experiments.
