  • When the molecule in the excited state is subject to prompt predissociation, it is quite nontrivial to obtain vibrational structure of the excited state in general. This applies to the case of photochemistry of dimethylamine (DMA:$(CH_3)_2NH$). When DMA is excited to its first electronically excited state ($S_1$), the N-H bond dissociation occurs promptly. Therefore, $S_1$ vibronic bands are homogeneously broadened to give extremely small ionization cross sections and heavily-congested spectral features, making infeasible any reasonable spectral assignment. Here, we demonstrate that the predissociation rate of the excited state could be significantly reduced by the NH/ND substitution to give the much better-resolved $S_1$ spectral feature, revealing the vibrational structure of the excited state of $DMA-d_1$ ($(CH_3)_2ND$) for the first time.

  • Among various image fusion methods, intensity-hue-saturation(IHS) technique is capable of quickly merging the massive volumes of data. For IKONOS imagery, IHS can yield satisfactory 'spatial' enhancement but may introduce 'spectral' distortion, appearing as a change in colors between compositions of resampled and fused multispectral bands. To solve this problem a fast IHS fusion technique with spectral adjustment is presented. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can provide better performance than the conventional IHS method, in both processing speed and image quality.

  • This paper discusses the capabilities of airborne remotely sensed data to detect and classify forest damades. In this work the AMS (Aircraft Multiband Scanner) was used to obtain digital imagery at 300m altitude for forest damage inventory in the Black Forest of Germany. MSS(Multispectral Scanner) digital numbers were converted to spectral emittance and radiance values in 8 spectral bands from the visible to the thermal infrared and submitted to a maximum-likelihood classification for : (1) tree species ; and. (2) damage classes. As expected, the resulted, the results of MSS data with high spatial resolution 0.75m$\times$0.75m enabled the detection and identification of single trees with different damages and were nearly equivalent to the truth information of ground checked data.

  • Low resolution spectral modeling of water vapor is carried out by applying the weighted-sum-of-gray-gases model (WSGGM) to a narrow band. For a given narrow band, focus is placed on proper modeling of gray gas absorption coefficients vs. temeprature relation used for any solution methods for the Radiative Transfer Equation(RTE). Comparison between the modeled emissivity and the "true" emissivity obtained from a high temperatue statistical narrow band parameters is made ofr the total spectrum as well as for a few typical narrow bands. Application of the model to nonuniform gas layers is also made. Low resolution spectral intensities at the boundary are obtained for uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temeprature profiles using the obtained for uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temperature profiles using the obtained WSGGM's with 9 gray gases. The results are compared with the narrow band spectral intensities as obtained by a narrow band model-based code with the Curtis-Godson approximation. Good agreement is found between them. Local heat source strength and total wall heat flux are also compared for the cases of Kim et al, which again gives promising agreement.

  • We analyze the behaviors of reddening vectors in the Spitzer/IRAC photometric system for young stellar objects (YSOs) of different evolutionary stages, masses, and inclinations using the model spectral energy distributions (SED) by Robitaille et al. As reported in visible and near-infrared photometric systems, the magnitudes and colors of YSOs show strong SED dependence and non-linearity. In the [8.0] band where the 9.7 ${\mu}m$ interstellar silicate feature plays a significant role in extinction, the effective wavelength shifts "bluewards", not "redwards" as in most, if not all, optical and infrared bands including the other three IRAC bands, as the extinction in Ks increases up to ~2 mag, and then asymptotically reaches a constant value as the extinction further increases. This "bluening" is seen when the YSO is in later evolutionary stage and/or has a stellar mass of ~2 $M_{\odot}$ or greater. In many cases, the reddening vectors in the IRAC color-color diagrams are prominently curved, and in some extreme cases, the colors involving the [8.0] band becomes bluer in the beginning and then becomes redder later as the amount of extinction increases. We also present our "suggested" extinction laws employing the combination of a broken-power law and the 9.7 ${\mu}m$ silicate feature, which well reproduce the extinction behaviors observed in the IRAC bands.

  • We propose an effective Landsat TM image compression method using the classified bidirectional prediction (CBP), the classified KLT and the SPIHT. The SPIHT is used to exploit the spatial redundancy of feature bands selected in the visible range and the infrared range separately. Regions of the prediction bands are classified into three classes in the wavelet domain, and then the CBP is performed to exploit the spectral redundancy. Residual bands that consist of difference values between the original band and the predicted band are decorrelated by the spectral KLT Finally, the three dimensional (3-D) SPIHT is used to encode the decorrelated coefficients. Experiment results show that the proposed method reconstructs higher quality Landsat TM image than conventional methods at the same bit rate.

  • A wide spectral coverage from near-infrared (NIR) to far-infrared (FIR) of AKARI both for imaging and spectroscopy enables us to efficiently study the emission from gas and dust in the interstellar medium (ISM). In particular, the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI offers a unique opportunity to carry out sensitive spectroscopy in the NIR ($2-5{\mu}m$) for the first time from a spaceborn telescope. This spectral range contains a number of important dust bands and gas lines, such as the aromatic and aliphatic emission bands at 3.3 and $3.4-3.5{\mu}m$, $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ ices at 3.0 and $4.3{\mu}m$, CO, $H_2$, and H I gas emission lines. In this paper we concentrate on the aromatic and aliphatic emission and ice absorption features. The balance between dust supply and destruction suggests significant dust processing taking place as well as dust formation in the ISM. Detailed analysis of the aromatic and aliphatic bands of AKARI observations for a number of H ii regions and H ii region-like objects suggests processing of carbonaceous dust in the ISM. The ice formation process can also be studied with IRC NIR spectroscopy efficiently. In this review, dust processing in the ISM divulged by recent analysis of AKARI data is discussed.

  • In this study, the concept and techniques to generate the level lA, lB and 2A image products have been reviewed. In particular, radiometric and geometric corrections and bands registration used to generate level lA, lB and 2A products have been focused in this study. Radiometric correction is performed to take into account radiometric gain and offset calculated by compensating the detector response non-uniformity. And, in order to compensate satellite altitude, attitude, skew effects, earth rotation and earth curvature, some geometric parameters for geometric corrections are computed and applied. Bands registration process using the matching function between a geometry, which is called 'reference geometry', and another one which is corresponds to the image to be registered is applied to images in case of multi-spectral imaging mode. In order to generate level-lA image products, a simple radiometric processing is applied to a level-0 image. Level-lB image has the same radiometry correction as a level-lA image, but is also issued from some geometric corrections in order to compensate skew effects, Earth rotation effects and spectral misregistration. Level-2A image is generated using some geo-referencing parameters computed by ephemeris data, orbit attitudes and sensor angles. Level lA image is tested by visual analysis. The difference between distances calculated level 1 B image and distances of real coordinate is tested. Level 2A image is tested Using checking points.

  • For musical genre classification, various types of feature vectors are utilized. Mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC), decorrelated filter bank (DFB), and octave-based spectral contrast (OSC) are widely used as short-term features, and their long-term variations are also utilized. In this paper, OSC features are extracted not only in the single-octave band domain, but also in the multiple-octave band one to capture the correlation between octave bands. As a baseline system, we select the genre classification system that won the fourth place in the 2012 music information retrieval evaluation exchange (MIREX) contest. By applying the OSC features based on multiple-octave bands, we obtain the better classification accuracy by 0.40% and 3.15% for the GTZAN and Ballroom databases, respectively.

  • This paper proposes a new method of improving the quality of High Efficiency Advanced Audio Coding (HE-AAC). HE-AAC encodes input source by allocating bits for each scalefactor bands appropriately according to human ear's psychoacoustic property. As a result, insufficient bits are assigned to the bands which have relatively low energy. This imbalance between different energy bands can cause decreasing of sound quality like musical noise. In the proposed system, a Linear Prediction (LP) module is combined with HE-AAC as a pre-processor to improve sound quality by even bits distribution. To apply accurate human being's psychoacoustic property, the psychoacoustic model uses Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) spectrum of original input signal to make masking threshold. In its implementation, masking threshold of psychoacoustic model is normalized using the LP spectral envelope in prior to quantization of the LP residual. Experimental result shows that, the proposed algorithm allocates bits appropriately for insufficient bits condition and improves the performance of HE-AAC.
