  • Large number of coral reefs in Thailand waters make the use of satellite imagery probably the only practical method for their monitoring. This paper reports the result of detecting small shallow-water coral reef by using maximum likelihood classification technique. Combination of blue/green and near-infrared band ratio are used as spectral signatures derived from a Landsat 7 imagery covering western portion of the Gulf of Thailand. Result assessment reveals accuracy significantly over 60 percent. The result is encouraging and would be a basis for further study to realize the full potential and limitation of this technique.

  • We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple tunable photonic microwave band-pass filter with high resolution using a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) and an optical time-delay line. The RSOA is used as a gain medium for generating cross-gain modulation (XGM) effect as well as an optical source. The optical source provides narrow spectral width by self-injection locking the RSOA in conjunction with a partial reflection filter with specific center wavelength. Then, when the RSOA is operated in the saturation region and the modulated recursive signal is injected into the RSOA, the recursive signal is inversely copied to the injection locked optical source due to the XGM effect. Also, the tunability of the passband of the proposed microwave filter is shown by controlling an optical time-delay line in a recursive loop.

  • We investigate broadband emission properties of the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) 3C 58 using a spectral energy distribution (SED) model. We attempt to match simultaneously the broadband SED and spatial variations and emission about 3C 58 in X-ray band. We further the model to explain a possible far-IR feature of which a hint is recently suggested in 3C 58: a small bump at ~10^11 GHz in the PLANCK and Herschel band. While external dust emission may easily explain the observed bump, it may be internal emission of PWNe implying an another additional population of particles. Although significance for the bump in 3C 58 is not higher than other PWNe, here we explore possible origins of the IR bump using the emission model and find that a population of electrons with GeV energies can explain the bump. If it is produced in the PWN, it may provide new insights into particle acceleration and flows in PWNe.

  • Many researchers had examined the validity of using the high-to-low ratio between two fixed frequency band amplitudes (H/L-FFB) from the surface electromyography of a face and body as the first spectral index to assess muscle fatigue. Despite these studies, the disadvantage of this index is the lack of a criterion for choosing the optimal border frequency. We tested the potential of using the high-to-low ratio between two signal spectral moments (H/L-SSM), without fixed border frequencies, to evaluate muscle fatigue and predict endurance time ($T_{end}$), which was determined when the subject was exhausted and could no longer follow the fixed contraction cycle. Ten healthy participants performed five sets of voluntary isotonic contractions until they could only produce 10% and 20% of their maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). The $T_{end}$ values for all participants were $138{\pm}35s$ at 10% MVC and $69{\pm}20s$ at 20% MVC. Changes in conventional spectral indices, such as the mean power frequency (MPF), Dimitrov spectral index (DSI), H/L-FFB, and H/L-SSM, were extracted from surface EMG signals and were monitored using the initial slope computed every 10% of $T_{end}$ as a statistical indicator and compared as a predictor of $T_{end}$. Significant correlations were found between $T_{end}$ and the initial H/L-SSM slope as computed over 30% of $T_{end}$. In conclusion, initial H/L-SSM slope can be used to describe changes in the spectral content of surface EMG signals and can be employed as a good predictor of $T_{end}$ compared to that of conventional spectral indices.

  • Interference effects of ultra-wideband devices using the frequency band from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz on wireless broadband are evaluated. The ultra-wideband emission power spectral density that would be necessary to protect a wireless broadband station is considered. Also, an analytic scheme based on a system level simulation of a WiBro system is proposed.

  • State-of-the-art voice codecs have been developed to extend the input bandwidth to enhance quality while maintaining interoperability with a legacy codec. Most of them employ a modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) for coding their extended band. We propose a source filter model-based coding algorithm of MDCT spectral coefficients, apply it to the ITU-T G.711.1 super wideband (SWB) extension codec, and subjectively test it to validate the model. A subjective test shows a better quality over the standardized SWB codec.

  • IMBE(Improved Multi-Band Excitation) vocoders exhibit good performance at low data rates. The major drawback to IMBE coders is their large computational requirements. In this paper, thus, we propose a new pitch search method that preserves the quality of the IMBE vocoder with reduced complexity. The basic idea is to reduce computation complexity of the pitch searching by using the SAMDF. Applying the proposed method to the IMBE vocoder, we can get approximately 52.02% searching time reduction in the pitch search. There is no difference in voice quality between conventional IMBE and proposed IMBE.

  • Beijing-Arizona-Taipei-Connecticut (BATC) survey is a long term project to map the spectral energy distribution of various objects using 15 intermediate band filters and aims to cover about 450 sq degrees of northern sky. The SED information, combined with image structure information, is used to classify objects into several stellar and galaxy categories as well as QSO candidates. In this paper, we present a preliminary setup of robust data reduction procedure recently developed at NCU and also briefly discuss general classification scheme: redshift estimate, and automatic detection of variable objects.

  • Real-time RELP vocoder is implemented on the TMS320C25 DSP chip. The implemented system is IBM-PC add-on board and composed of analog in/out unit, DSP unit, memoy unit, IBM-PC interface unit and its supporting assembly software. Speech analyzer and synthesizer is implimented by DSP assembly software. Speech parameters such as LPC coefficients, base-band residuals, and signal gains is extracted by autocorrelation method and inverse filter and synthesized by spectral folding method and direct form synthesis filter in this board. And then, real-time RELP vocoder with 9.6Kbps is simulated by down-loading method in the DSP program RAM.

  • Spectral properties of europium activated intermediate compounds in the system R2O3-P2O5(R=La, Y, and Gd) are presented, including also phosphors with bismuth and vanadate sensitization. The sensitized phosphors are less efficient than unsensitized phosphors. (The ratio of oxygen to phosphorus effects the charge transfer band) Most phosphors have low efficiencies, but La3PO7 and Gd3PO7 hosts are possible for commercial luminescent materials.
