  • The attenuations of peak vertical displacements are studies using a conventional least squeare regression technique for microearthquakes occurred in the Kyungsang Basin southeastern Korea. The regression model applied to bandpass-fitered ground motion data includes parameters to account for geometric spreading anelastic attenuation depending on frequency source size and station site effects. Thirty nine displacement traces obtained by integrating velocity records for six shallow local microearthquakes are used to determine attenuation characteristics in the Basin. The regression result of the peak amplitude data leads to Q(f)=59.9 {{{{ {f }^{0.955 } }} for 1.5Hz$\leq$ f $\leq$ 25 Hz. It appears that the anelastic attenuation in the Kyungsang Basin is greater than that in the Western North America Area.

  • The signal transmitted from radar is not reflected from a single point when the signal reflected by complex target. Resultantly, the amplitude and phase of the received signal can be changed because the target has lots of scatterers. The changes of the amplitude and the phase mean Glint and RCS, respectively. Although the Glint and RCS that caused by the same scatters are uncorrelated, however, they are not independent completely. Therefore, this paper proposes a method for generating the Glint and RCS by using same random number generator. And the time correlations of the Glint and RCS are respectively implemented in frequency domain by using each power spectral density of them.

  • This paper presents development and testing of a new numerical spectral domain algorithm devoted to blocking unsuccessful automatic reclosing onto permanent faults and the fault distance calculation. The arc voltage amplitude and the fault distance are calculated from the fundamental and third harmonics of the terminal voltages and currents phasors. From the calculated arc voltage amplitude it can be concluded if the fault is transient arcing fault or permanent arcless fault. If the fault is permanent automatic reclosure should be blocked. The algorithm can be applied for adaptive autoreclosure, distance protection, and fault location. The results of algorithm testing through computer simulation are given.

  • The monitoring and the diagnosis of the faults in induction motors starting from the stator current are very interesting, since it is an accessible and measurable quantity. The spectral analysis of the stator current makes it possible to highlight the characteristic frequencies of the faults but in a wide frequency range depending on half the sampling frequency, making it very difficult to monitor on-line the faults. In order to facilitate the use of the relevant frequencies of machine faults we proposed the extraction of the frequency components using two methods, namely, the amplitude and the instantaneous frequency. The theoretical bases of these methods were presented and the results were validated on a test bench with an induction motor of 5.5 kw.

  • In this paper, we mainly analyze the performance of two ultra wideband communication systems, the classical Time Hopping Binary Pulse Position Modulation (TH-BPPM) UWB system and the Time Hopping Bipolar Pulse Amplitude Modulation (TH-BPAM) UWB system. The performance of TH-BPPM and TH-BPAM is analyzed in detail under an ideal AWGN channel and a correlation receiver. We use the power spectral density function to get the expression of BER of these two UWB systems. It yields simple and exact formulas relating the performance to the system parameters. The analysis shows that TH-BPPM suffers performance degradation with respect to TH-BPAM. Furthermore, we give the computer simulation of both data and image transmission and our simulation results also prove our theoretical analysis.

  • The microearthquake and explosion events recorded in the seismic KNUE(Korea National University of Education) network were analyzed. The seismic data were recorded from Dec. 1997 to Dec. 1998. Total of 118 records consisted of 24 earthquake and 4 explosion events were instrumented at 6 stations. Spectral values increases as magnitude increases and the predominant frequency band expands to low frequency. zone as magnitude increases. Three-dimensional spectrograms(time frequency. amplitude) were also synthesized in order to discriminate microearthquakes and artificial underground explosions. The waves from microearthquakes show that frequency content of dominant amplitude appeared above 10 Hz and the discrimination can be performed in almost all the frequency domain of 3-d spectrogram.

  • The purpose of the present study is to analyse characteristics of the background noise for the broadband seismic stations in KMA. It is well known that the background noise arises continuously from long period microseism, sea waves, minute changes of atmospheric pressure, seasonal temperature change of the ground surface, culture activities, and etc. The background noise shows spatial and temporal changes and it has various characteristics such as its spectral amplitudes in frequency domain are not constant Such the background noise gives considerable influences on the quality of seismic record. To investigate annual variations, the background noise was separated into high frequency components of above 1Hz More larger average amplitude is found in winter than other seasons. The average amplitude for 12 seismic stations are compared. It is known that the background noise is considerably larger in stations located in island region such as Jeju, Ulleungdo, and Bagryeongdo seismic stations. However the noise is relatively small in inland stations such as Chuncheon, Chungju and Uljin seismic stations.

  • Recently, correlated superposition coding (CSC) has been proposed to implement non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) without successive interference cancellation (SIC), without loss of spectral efficiency, in contrast to conventional independent superposition coding (ISC). However, correlation between signals has reduced the average total allocated power, which results in degraded performance. Thus, in order to avoid the reduction of the average total allocated power owing to correlation between signals, this paper proposes a cross-correlated quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) NOMA scheme under Rayleigh fading channel surroundings. First, we design the cross-correlated QAM NOMA scheme. Then, simulations demonstrate that for the weaker channel gain's user, the symbol error rate (SER) performance of the proposed cross-correlated QAM NOMA improves largely, whereas for the stronger channel gain's user, the SER performance of the proposed cross-correlated QAM CSM NOMA degrades little, compared to that of the conventional QAM NOMA.

  • Recently, stratigraphic reservoirs are getting more attention than structural reservoirs which have mostly developed. However, recognizing stratigraphic thin gas reservoirs in a stacked section is usually difficult because of tuning effects. Moreover, if the reflections from the brine-saturated region of a thin layer have the same polarity with those from the gas-saturated region, we could not easily identify the gas reservoir with conventional data processing technique. In this study, we introduced a way to delineate the gas-saturated region in a thin layer reservoir using a spectral decomposition method. First of all, amplitude spectrum with the variation of the frequency and the incident angle was investigated for the medium which represents property of Class 3, Class 1 or Class 4 AVO response. The results show that the maximum difference in the amplitude spectra between brine and gas-saturated thin layers occurs around the peak frequency independent of the incident angle and the type of AVO responses. In addition, the amplitude spectra of the gas-saturated zone are greater than those of brine-saturated one in Class 3 and Class 4 at the peak frequency while those of phenomenon occur oppositely in Class 1. Based on the results, we applied spectral decomposition method to the stacked section in order to distinguish the gas-saturated zone from the brine-saturated zone in a thin layer reservoir. To verify our new method, we constructed a thin-layer velocity model which contains both gas and brine-saturated zones which have the same reflection polarities. As a result, in the spectral decomposed sections near the peak frequency obtained by Wigner-Ville Distribution (WVD), we could identify the difference between reflections from gas- and brinesaturated region in the thin layer reservoir, which was hardly distinguishable in the stacked section.

  • The empirical Green's function method is applied to the foreshock and the mainshock of the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake to simulate strong ground motions of the mainshock and scenario earthquake at seismic stations of seven metropolises in South Korea, respectively. To identify the applicability of the method in advance, the mainshock is simulated, assuming the foreshock as the empirical Green's function. As a result of the simulation, the overall shape, the amplitude of PGA, and the duration and response spectra of the simulated seismic waveforms are similar with those of the observed seismic waveforms. Based on this result, a scenario earthquake on the causative fault of Gyeongju earthquake with a moment magnitude 6.5 is simulated, assuming that the mainshock serves as the empirical Green's function. As a result, the amplitude of PGA and the duration of simulated seismic waveforms are significantly increased and extended, and the spectral amplitude of the low frequency band is relatively increased compared with that of the high frequency band. If the empirical Green's function method is applied to several recent well-recorded moderate earthquakes, the simulated seismic waveforms can be used as not only input data for developing ground motion prediction equations, but also input data for creating the design response spectra of major facilities in South Korea.
