A spectral line survey is performed from 159.7 to 164.7 GHz toward Orion-KL, as an extension of our previous line survey from 138.3 to 150.7 GHz with the same 14 m radio telescope of Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory. Typical system temperatures were 260 - 1000 K to achieve a sensitivity of about 0.02 - 0.04 K in TA unit. A total of 63 line spectra are detected in this survey. Among them, 54 lines lines are found to be the first detections towards an astronomical source and only 9 spectral lines have been previously identified from other observations. Forty-eight of 54 lines are believed to be from the known transitions of the known molecules, while 6 lines are 'unidentified'. All detected lines are found to be from a total of 10 molecular species and their isotopic variants. The molecular species with most numerous detected transitions are $HCOOCH_3$ (22), followed by $CH_3OCH_3$ (7), $C_2H_5CN$ (7), and $SO_2$ (6). The LTE rotation diagram analysis using all homogeneous data with those from previous survey gives more reliable determination of physical quantities. The derived values of the rotation temperatures and column densities for $HCOOCH_3$, $CH_3OCH_3$, and $SO_2$ are are 75 $\~$ 197 K and $1.5 {\~}18 {\times} 10^{15}\;cm^{-2}$, respectively.
We have carried out the near-infrared spectroscopic observations of recent classical novae (e.g., V2468Cyg, V1280Sco) within a few years from the outburst with AKARI as a part of AKARI Open Time Observing Program for Phase 3-II "Spectral Evolution of Novae in the Near-Infrared based on AKARI Observations (Proposal ID: SENNA)". The homogeneous datasets of near-infrared spectra from $2.5{\mu}m$ to $5{\mu}m$ with AKARI/IRC collected in this program are useful to infer the physical conditions of the shell formed by the ejected materials, to examine the chemical properties of the ejecta gas, and to examine the properties of dust formed in the nova ejecta.
We present results of AKARI/IRC near-infrared (NIR) slit-spectroscopy ($2.5-5.0{\mu}m$, R ~ 100) of Galactic sources, focusing on ice absorption features. We investigate the abundance of $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ ices and other ice species (CO and XCN ices) along lines of sight towards Galactic H $\small{II}$ regions, massive YSOs, and infrared diffuse sources. Even among those different kinds of astronomical objects, the abundance ratio of $CO_2$ to $H_2O$ ices does not vary significantly, suggesting that the pathway to $CO_2$ ice formation driven by UV irradiation is not effective at least among the present targets.
We present observations of $HCO^+$ 1-0 absorption lines toward two extragalactic compact radio sources, NRAO 150 and BL Lac with the Korean VLBI Network in order to investigate their time variation over 20 years by Galactic foreground clouds. It is found that the line shape of $-17kms^{-1}$ component changed marginally during 1993-1998 period and has remained unaltered thereafter for NRAO 150. Its behavior is different from that of $H_2CO$$1_{10}-1_{11}$, suggesting chemical differentiation on ~ 20 AU scale, the smallest ever seen. On the other hand, BL Lac exhibits little temporal variation for the $HCO^+$ and $H_2CO$ lines. Our observation also suggests that Korea VLBI Network performs reliably in the spectrum mode in that the shapes of the new $HCO^+$ 1-0 spectra are in good agreement with the previous ones to an accuracy of a few percent except the time varying component toward NRAO 150.
We compare the results of the surveys of starless cores performed with CS (2-1) and (3-2) lines to study inward motions in the cores. The velocity shifts of the CS(3-2) and (2-1) lines with respect to $N_2H^+$ are found to correlate well with each other and to have similar number distributions, implying that, in many cores, systematic inward motions of gaseous material may occur over a range of density of at least a factor ${\~}$4. Fits of the CS spectra to a 2-layer radiative transfer model in ten infall candidates suggest that the median effective line-of-sight speed of the inward-moving gas is ${\~}0.07 km\;s^{-l}$ for CS (3-2) and ${\~} 0.04 km\;s^{-l}$ for CS(2-1). Considering that the optical depth obtained from the fits is usually smaller in CS(3-2) than in (2-1) line, this may indicate that CS(3-2) usually traces inner, denser gas with greater inward motions than CS(2-1) implying that many of the infall candidates have faster infall toward the center. However, this conclusion may not be representative of all starless core infall candidates, due to the statistically small number analyzed here. Further line observations will be useful to test this conclusion.
We present measurements of interstellar $H_2$ absorption lines in the continuum spectra of 54 early-type stars in the Galactic disk and halo and 3 stars in the Magellanic Clouds. The data were obtained with the Berkeley Extreme and Far-Ultraviolet Spectrometer (BEFS), part of the ORFEUS telescope, which flew on the ORFEUS-SPAS I and II space-shuttle missions in 1993 and 1996, respectively. The spectra extend from the interstellar cutoff at $912{\AA}$ to about $1200{\AA}$ with a spectral resolution of ${\sim}3000$ and statistical signal-to-noise ratios between 10 and 65. Assuming a velocity profile derived from optical observations (when available), we model the column densities N(J) of the rotational levels J = 0 through 5 for each line of sight. Our data reproduce the relationships among molecular and total hydrogen column density, fractional molecular abundance, and reddening first seen in Copernicusobservations of nearby stars (Savage et al. 1977). The results show that most of these molecular clouds have $H_2$ total column densities between $10^{15}cm^{-2}$ and $10^{21}cm^{-2}$, and kinetic temperatures from 21 K to 232 K, with average of 89 K, consistent with the result of Copernicus (Savage et al. 1977).
Turbulence is a crucial component of dynamics of astrophysical fluids dynamics, including those of ISM, clusters of galaxies and circumstellar regions. Doppler shifted spectral lines provide a unique source of information on turbulent velocities. We discuss Velocity-Channel Analysis (VCA) and its offspring Velocity Coordinate Spectrum (VCS) that are based on the analytical description of the spectral line statistics. Those techniques are well suited for studies of supersonic turbulence. We stress that a great advantage of VCS is that it does not necessary require good spatial resolution. Addressing the studies of mildly supersonic and subsonic turbulence we discuss the criterion that allows to determine whether Velocity Centroids are dominated by density or velocity. We briefly discuss ways of going beyond power spectra by using of higher order correlations as well as genus analysis. We outline the relation between Spectral Correlation Functions and the statistics available through VCA and VCS.
Chemical compositions of planetary nebulae are of interest for a study of the late stage of stellar evolution and for elemental contributions to the interstellar medium of reprocessed elements since possibly a large fraction of stars in 0.8 - 8 $M_{\bigodot}$ range go through this stage. One of the methods for getting chemical composition is a construction of theoretical photoionization models, which involves geometrical complexities and a variety of physical processes. With modelling effort, one can analyze the high dispersion and find the elemental abundances for a number of planetary nebulae. The model also gives the physical parameter of planetary nebula and its central star physical parameter along with the knowledge of its evolutionary status. Two planetary nebulae, NGC 7026 and Hu 1-2, which could have evolved from about one solar mass progenitor stars, showed radically different chemical abundances: the former has high chemical abundances in most elements, while the latter has extremely low abundances. We discuss their significance in the light of the evolution of our Galaxy.
Supersonic turbulence is believed to decay rapidly within a flow crossing time irrespective of the degree of magnetization. However, this consensus of decaying magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence relies on local isothermal simulations, which are unable to investigate the role of global magnetic fields and structures. Utilizing three-dimensional MHD simulations including interstellar cooling and heating, we investigate decaying MHD turbulence within cold neutral medium sheets embedded in warm neutral medium. Early evolution is consistent with previous studies characterized rapid decay of turbulence with the decaying time shorter than a flow crossing time and power-law temporal decay of turbulent kinetic energy with slope of -1. If initial magnetic fields are strong and perpendicular to the sheet, however long term evolutions of kinetic energy shows that a significant amount of turbulent energy still remains even after ten flow crossing times, and decaying rate is reduced as field strengths increase. We analyse power spectra of remaining turbulence to show that incompressible, in-plane motions dominate.
We map 6 massive young stellar objects (YSOs) in the CO J=2-1 line and survey 18 massive YSOs, including the six, in the HCO+ J=1−0, SiO J=2−1, H2O 616 − 523 maser, and CH3OH 70 − 61 A+ maser lines. We detect CO bipolar outflows in all the six mapped sources. Four of them are newly discovered (07299−1651, 21306+5540, 22308+5812, 23133+6050), while 05490+2658 is mapped in the CO J=2-1 line for the first time. The detected outflows are much more massive and energetic than outflows from low-mass YSOs with masses >20 M⊙ and momenta >300 M⊙ km s−1. They have mass outflow rates (3−6)×10−4 M⊙ yr−1, which are at least one order of magnitude greater than those observed in low-mass YSOs. We detect HCO+ and SiO line emission in 18 (100%) and 4 (22%) sources, respectively. The HCO+ spectra show high-velocity wings in 11 (61%) sources. We detect H2O maser emission in 13 (72%) sources and 44 GHz CH3OH maser emission in 8 (44%) sources. Of the detected sources, 5 H2O and 6 CH3OH maser sources are new discoveries. 20081+3122 shows high-velocity (>30 km s−1) H2O maser lines. We find good correlations of the bolometric luminosity of the central (proto)star with the mechanical force, mechanical luminosity, and mass outflow rate of molecular outflow in the bolometric luminosity range of 10−1−106 L⊙, and identified 3 intermediate- or high-mass counterparts of Class O objects.
