  • Two RADARSAT SAR images with different modes acquired by Canadian Space Agency to test the effectiveness of geological lineament extraction and spring water detection over the Cheju Island. Geological lineaments are poorly developed this basalt dominant volcanic island, but more linear features can be extracted when SAR and TM images are simultaneously analyzed than when TM image alone is used. This results mainly owe to the facts that RADARSAT SAR systems are able to provide data with different frequencies, azimuth, and incidence angles. Distribution of spring water along coast is poorly correlated with geological lineaments or drainage pattern, but those in middle range of mountain region are developed along geological lineaments. Detection of spring water using remotely sensed images are turned out to be very difficult to achieve. Radial shaped sea surface temperature anomaly derived from TM thermal band should be the best candidate for spring water, but the resolution is not high enough. We also investigate the normalized radar cross section (or sigma naught) converted from RADARSAT and ERS-1 SAR data but to discriminate the spring water effectively except where relatively large water mass is observed on land side. Speckle noise and irregularity in physical sea surface condition are the serious obstacles for this application. ERS-1 SAR image acquired in low incidence angle was more useful for geological lineament estimation and water body study than RADARSAT SAR images with high incidence angles. Therefore the selection of incidence angle is critical in geological and spring water applications of SAR images, and low incidence angles less than about 30$^{\circ}$ are recommended to monitor the Cheju volcanic island.

  • Ganglion cysts are benign soft tissues usually encountered in the wrist. In this paper, we propose a method to extract a ganglion cyst region from ultrasonography images by using image segmentation. The proposed method using the possibilistic c-means (PCM) clustering method is applicable to ganglion cyst extraction. The methods considered in this thesis are fuzzy stretching, median filter, PCM clustering, and connected component labeling. Fuzzy stretching performs well on ultrasonography images and improves the original image. Median filter reduces the speckle noise without decreasing the image sharpness. PCM clustering is used for categorizing pixels into the given cluster centers. Connected component labeling is used for labeling the objects in an image and extracting the cyst region. Further, PCM clustering is more robust in the case of noisy data, and the proposed method can extract a ganglion cyst area with an accuracy of 80% (16 out of 20 images).

  • A method to reduce seam line artifact in spatial compounding of ultrasonic images is presented. Spatial compounding is a speckle reducing imaging technique in which a number of ultrasound images of a given target that have been obtained from multiple view angles are combined into a single compounded image by combining the data received from each data point in the compounded image. Since different view angle results in different view area, and the images of different view arms are combined into an image, the compounded image consists of regions with different signal to noise ratio, and the boundary lines between these regions are visible as seam lines in the compounded images. In this paper, we present an algorithm that reduces the visibility of this seam line in the spatially compounded images. Design procedure for a FIH filter is described and the results of applying the filter to in-vivo ultrasonic images are analyzed.

  • Modem SAR interferometry (IFSAR) sensors delivering intensity images and corresponding digital terrain model (DTM) allow for a thorough surface lineament interpretation with the all-weather day-night applicability. In this paper, an automatic linear-feature detection algorithm for high-resolution SAR images acquired in Taiwan is proposed. Methodologies to extract linear features consist of several stages. First, the image denoising techniques are used to remove the speckle noise on the raw image. In this stage, the Lee filter has been chosen because of its superior performance. After denoising, the Coefficient of Variation Detector is performed on the result images for edge enhancements and detection. Dilation and erosion techniques are used to reconnect the fragmented lines. The Hough transform, which is a special case of a more general transform known as Radon transform, is a suitable method for line detection in our analysis. Finally, linear features are extracted from the binary edge image. The last stage contains many substeps such as edge thinning and curve pruning.

  • The detection of oil spills using radar image has been studied extensively. However, most of the proposed techniques have been focused on improving detection accuracy through the advancement of algorithms. In this study, research has been conducted to improve the accuracy of oil spill detection by improving the quality of radar images, which are used as input data to detect oil spills. Thresholding algorithms were used to measure the image improvement both before and after processing. The overall accuracy increased by approximately 16%, the producer accuracy increased by 40%, and the user accuracy increased by 1.5%. The kappa coefficient also increased significantly, from 0.48 to 0.92.

  • ESPI is a noncontact, nondestructive and relatively fast inspection method. For these reasons ESPI is being applied as a valuable tool in the nondestructive evaluation of structural components. Phase shifting ESPI is used more effectively than the traditional ESPI because spatial resolution of small object displacements are improved and numerical phase values are obtained for all pixels in the image. Consequently the quantitative measurement of deformation is possible. ESPI fringe patterns are contaminated with high levels of speckle noise. Therefore the phase image is to be smoothed to remove the noise and obtain a better signal-to-noise ratio. In this study, smoothing is done by phase shifting convolution to avoid smoothing errors close to the 2$\pi$ phase ambiguities in the deformation phase image, and median filter is used as a smoothing filter.

  • The time domain methods of estimating the attenuation coefficient are generally based on the analysis of statisical properties of the reflected echoes form an attenuating medium. Hence, it is often required to have a large number of data samples in order to obtain a statistically stable estimation result. In the attenuation estimation problem, this means that many different speckle patterns are required in the spatial resolution volume of an attenLlation image. In this paper, by using the fact that the speckle pattern Is sensitive to the point spread function of the ultrasound beam, we suggest a method to generate the statiscally uncorrelated or slightly correlated data samples in a given region by rotating a linear transducer and carrying out lateral scans for all rotating angles. This technique is applied to the entropy method for attenuation estimation proposed recently by the authors where the performance is verified by experiments using a tissue equivalent phantom.

  • This paper presents ESPI system for the measurement of thermal expansion coefficient of STS430 up to 1,00$0^{\circ}C$ . Existing methods, strain gauge and moire have the limitation of contact to object and do not supply the coefficient up to 80$0^{\circ}C$ . There needs to measure the data up to 80$0^{\circ}C$, because heat resistant materials have high melting temperature up to 1,000'E In previous studies related to thermal strain analysis, the quantitative results have not reported by ESPI at high temperature, yet. In-plane ESPI and vacuum chamber for the reduction of air turbulence and oxidation are designed for the measurement of the coefficient up to 1,00$0^{\circ}C$ and speckle correlation fringe pattern images are processed by commercial image filtering tool-smoothing, thinning and enhancement- to obtain quantitative results, which is compared with references data. The comparison shows two data are agreed within 4.1% blow $600^{\circ}C$ however, there is some difference up to $600^{\circ}C$. Also, the incremental ratio of the coefficient is changed up to 80$0^{\circ}C$ . The reason is the phase transformation of STS430 probably begins at 80$0^{\circ}C$

  • This paper presents the performance and problems in analysis method and testing system of Electronic Speckle Pattern Interfermetry(ESPI) method, in measuring two-dimensional in- plane displacement. The analysis result of measurement by ESPI is quite comparable to that of measurement by strain gauge method. This implieds that the method of ESPI is a very effective tool in non-contact two-dimensional in-plane strain analysis. But there is a controversial point, measurement error. This error is discussed to be affected not by ESPI method itself, but by its analysis scheme of the interference fringe, where the first-order interpolation has been applied to the points of strain measured. Further development of advanced first-order interpolation method is being undertaken for the more precise in-plane strain measurement.
