Lightly reinforced concrete (RC) moment frames may suffer significant damage during large earthquake events. Most buildings with RC moment frames were designed without considering seismic loads. The load-displacement response of gravity load designed frames could be altered by masonry infill walls. The objective of this study is to investigate the load-displacement response of gravity load designed frames with masonry infill walls. For this purpose, three-story gravity load designed frames with masonry infill walls were considered. The masonry infilled RC frames demonstrated larger lateral strength and stiffness than bare RC frames, whereas their drift capacity was less than that of bare frames. A specimen with a partial-height infill wall showed the least drift capacity and energy dissipation capacity. This specimen failed in shear, whereas other specimens experienced a relatively ductile failure mode (flexure-shear failure).
Local heat transfer coefficients were measured on semi-cylinders on which a circular water jet impinged in crossflow. The ratio of the semi-cylinder's diameter and the nozzle outlet diameter were varied parametrically, as were the Reynolds number and the supplementary water heights. The measurements showed that the circumferential distribution of the heat transfer coefficient peaked at the stagnation point. For a fixed supplementary water height, the peak heat transfer coefficient was not depend on the curvature of test specimen(d/D). Optimum height of supplementary water which brought about the augmentation of heat transfer at the stagnation point was S/D=1. The Nusselt number decreased as the circumferential distance or angle increased. The circumferential distribution of dimensionless heat transfer (Nu/Nus) was independent of d/D ($d/D{\geq}8.33$), but for the d/D<8.33, it was depended on d/D. At a fixed angle of specimen, dimensionless heat transfer (Nu/Nus) decreased as the ratio d/D increased. The extent of the decrease between d/D=6.67 and 8.33 was markedly greater than that between d/D=8.33 and 10, or d/D=10 and 11.67.
This paper is concered on the development of low-cost fine blanking die with two fluid chambers of which the pressure can be controlled by a hydraulic unit and its application to producting circular blanks in a conventional hydraulic press, not in a special triple-action press usually adopte in fine blanking operation. Four important working parameters affecting on the precision accuracy of products such as existence and position of Vee-ring, stripping force and counter punching force are primarily considered for experiments. Finite element analysis by suing ABAQUA software is approxi- mately made for blanking of circular specimen with a flat stripper plate and then compared with experimental measurements. The the theoretical prediction of camber height which represents deflection of a dish-shaped specimen after blanking seems to give a qualitatively good agreement. It is shown through experiments the the camber height decreases with decreasing stripping force and also with increasing counter punching force, but particularly depending on the latter much more than the former.
The post-fire behavior of structural elements and the cooling process has always been one of the main concerns of the structural engineers. The structures can be cooled at different rates, where they affect the structure's behavior. In the present study, a numerical model has been developed using the Abaqus program to investigate the effect of cooling rate on the post-fire behavior of the CFST column. To verify the model, results of an experimental study performed on CFST columns within a full heating and cooling cycle have been used. In this model, coMParison of the residual strength has been employed in order to examine the behavior of CFST column under different cooling rates. Furthermore, a parametric study was carried out on the strength of steel and concrete, the height of the specimens, the axial load ratio and the cross-sectional shape of the specimen through the proposed model. It was observed that the cooling rate affects the behavior of the column after the fire, and thus the higher the specimen's temperature is, the more effect it has on the behavior. It was also noticed that water cooling had slightly more residual strength than natural cooling. Furthermore, it was recognized from the parametric study, that by increasing the strength of steel and concrete and the load ratio, as well as modifying the cross-sectional shape from circular to square, residual strength of column at the cooling phase was less than that of the heating phase. In addition, with reducing column height, no change was witnessed in the column behavior after the cooling phase.
This study examined the radial variations in element demensions of mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica.), elm (Ulmus japonica.), maackia(Maackia amurensis.), castor aralia (Kalopanax pictus.) from pith outwards. Disks were cut from the d.b.h.(above 1.2m) of each species and specimen for tangential pore diameters, fiber length, ray height and width were taken from 1-3rd, 5th, 10th, 15th.............40th ring number from pith. The tangential pore diameters in the earlywood increased rapidly near the pith and then maintained almost constant or very gradually increased diameters in about 20th-30th ring number from pith. In the latewood, tangential pore diameters gradually increased from pith to outwards though the increment is smaller than in early wood. Radial variations of ray height and width maintained almost constant, gradually increased or rapidly increased diameters and then maintained almost constant from pith to outwards. Patterns of radial variations in the fiber length were almost coincident with patterns of earlywood pore diameters, and of ray height or width in Ulmus japonica and Maackia amurensis.
In the simultaneous forward-backward extrusion the effects of some process variables including area reduction, stroke advance, materials(Al 2024 and commercial pure copper) on the extrusion load, plastic flow and height ratio of upper to lower extruded parts are experimentally investigated and analyzed. Grid-marking technique is employed to visualize the plastic flow. The influence of using split and original specimen on the extrusion load and height ratio is evaluated by experiments. Experimental results show that the plastic flow if oriented to the part of lower area reduction in the begining but it is usually variated during the overall process. The configurations of plastic deformation and plastic flow are dependent on the working materials and the lubricational conditions.
This paper presents methods for analyzing the extent of cylindrical-shaped void closure. In addition, a quantitative relationship between change in void fraction and height reduction ratio of a compressed specimen is proposed. The height reduction ratio, number of deformation steps and billet rotation were chosen as key process parameters influencing the void closing behavior, namely, the changes in void shape and size during hot open die forging of a large ingot. The extent of void closure was analyzed from microscopic observations and estimated from tensile test results. The tensile strengths of specimens with closed voids and those without were compared for various reduction ratios in height. The results confirmed that void closure occurs at reduction ratios greater than 30 %. The void closing behavior could be expressed as a hyperbolic tangent function of reduction ratio in height, number of paths, and billet rotation. The knowledge presented in this paper could be helpful for optimizing deformation paths in open die forging processes.
