  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the propriety of TMA clathrate as a cold storage medium. Particularly, this is to examine the extent of subcooling improvement when the additives is added to the TMA clathrate, because water used for cold storage ma terial has low phase change temperature and subcooling. This study has been analyzed and compared pure water with TMA 30 wt% clathrate how phase change temperature, subcooling and specific heat in the various concentrations are changed. This results prove low phase change temperature and subcooling control effect when the ethanol is added to the TMA 30 wt% clathrate than the TMA 30 wt% clathrate. In addition, it results low specific heat when there is added to the TMA 30 wt% clathrate over 0.5 wt% ethanol in the cold heat source temperature under $-7^{\circ}C$. The other side, it results high specific heat when the ethanol is added in it at the cold heat source temperature under $-5^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it is found that the additive must be controlled by available solution limit and study for new additive must be lasted to know its effect.

  • Noroviruses (NoV) are known to cause acute epidemic gastroenteritis worldwide. Outbreak strains are predominantly genogroup I (GI) and genogroup II (GII) in oysters Crassostrea gigas. We investigated the changes in concentration of male specific coliphage (MSC) and NoV under heat treatment of the naturally contaminated oyster, Crassostrea gigas. After heat treatment for 5 min in $85^{\circ}C$, no viable MSC was detected. The concentrations of GI and GII NoV decreased by 1.65 log and 2.25 log, respectively, following heat treatment for 5 min at $100^{\circ}C$. Moreover, both GI and GII NoV were completely deactivated by heat treatment for 10 min at $100^{\circ}C$. Therefore, in order to reduce the risk of norovirus infection from contaminated oysters, immersion in boiling water for at least 10 min is recommended.

  • This study investigates mixtures of water and cryoprotectant agents (CPAs) to store high-grade cold energy. Although water is an ideal material for a cold thermal storage (CTS) due to its high specific heat, undesirable volume expansion may cause structural stresses during freezing. The volume expansion can be alleviated by adding the CPAs to water. However, the CPA aqueous solutions not only have different thermal properties but also transit to amorphous state different from pure water. Therefore, these characteristics should be considered when using them as material of the CTS. In experiments, glycerol and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) are selected as the candidate CPA. The volume expansion of the solution is measured by an in-situ strain gauge in low temperature region. The specific heat capacity of the solution is also measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Both the amount of volume expansion and the specific heat capacity of the CPA aqueous solution decrease in the case of higher concentration of CPA. These characteristics should be contemplated to select optimal aqueous solution for CTS for liquid air energy storage system (LAES). The CPA solutions have advantages of having wide temperature range to utilize the latent heat of water and higher sensible heat of the CPA. The CPA solutions which can satisfy the allowable stress of the structure are determined. Consequently, among the CPA solutions investigated, DMSO 20% w/w solution is the most suitable for the CTS.

  • Powder compaction technology is widely used to prepare thermal battery components. This method, however, is limited by the size, thickness, and geometry of the battery components. This limitation leads to excessive cell capacity, overweight, and higher cost of the pellets, which decreases the specific capacities and delays the activation time of thermal batteries. $FeS_2$ thin-film cathodes were fabricated by tape-casting technology and analyzed by SEM and EDS in this paper. The residual organic binder of the $FeS_2$ thin-film cathodes decreased with the temperature of the heat treatment, which improved the specific capacity because of the lower resistance. Specific capacities of the $FeS_2$ thin-film cathodes decreased because of the higher residual binder and the restrictive reaction of active materials with molten salts as the thickness increased. $FeS_2$ thin-film cathodes showed much higher specific capacity (1,212.2 As/g) than pellet cathodes (860.7 As/g) at the optimal heat-treatment temperature ($230^{\circ}C$).

  • Cold plasma and heat treatment were selected as technologies to reduce unburned carbon in fly ash to less than 1.0%. Both cold plasma and heat treatment made it possible to eliminate unburned carbon to less than 1.0%. In the case of fly ash, which almost entirely eliminated unburned carbon with an ignition loss of 0.5%, heat treatment caused adhesion among particles and the BET specific surface area rapidly decreased as the mean particle size increased. On the other hand, with cold plasma, unburned carbon elimination caused the BET specific surface area to decrease and, as no adhesion occurred among particles, the mean particle size became small. Also, cold plasma treatment allowed small spherical particles confined within the unburned carbon particles to be released with the elimination of the unburned carbon frame, so that the quantity of fine particles had a tendency to slightly increase.

  • Carbon-based electric double-layer capacitors are being evaluated as potential energy-storage devices in an expanding number of applications. In this study, samples of carbon black (CB) treated at different temperatures ranging from $650^{\circ}C$ to $1100^{\circ}C$ were used as electrodes to improve the efficiency of a capacitor. The surface properties of the heat-treated CB samples were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The effect of the heat-treatment temperature on the electrochemical behaviors was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and in galvanostatic charge-discharge experiments. The experimental results showed that the crystallinity of the CBs increased as the heat-treatment temperature increased. In addition, the specific capacitance of the CBs was found to increase with the increase in the heat-treatment temperature. The maximum specific capacitance was 165 $F{\cdot}g-1$ for the CB sample treated at $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • Intake gases other than air, which is composed of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and argon, are used to study their effects on the performance of the diesel engine experimentally. The engine is operated at constant speed and fixed fuel injection timing, and cylinder pressure and heat release rate are measured at various intake gas compositions. The results show that increase of oxygen concentration improves the performance of the engine generally. The adverse effect is observed when the oxygen concentration is increased over the critical oxygen concentration of this test, mainly because of the over-shortened ignition delay. Increase of carbon dioxide concentration degardes the performance of the engine, mainly due to the lower specific heat ratio of carbon dioxide. Adding argon gas to the intake gas improves the overall performance. Finally, it is found that two most influencing factors affecting the performance of the diesel engine in this study are ignition delay and speific heat ratio of the intake gas.

  • This study aims to find out cooling characteristics of TMA(Tri-Methyl-Amine, $(CH_3)_3N$) 25wt%-water clathrate compound with ethanol($CH_3CH_2OH$) such as supercooling, phase change temperature and specific heat. For this purpose, ethanol is added as per weight concentration and cooling experiment is performed at $-6{\sim}-8^{\circ}C$, cooling heat source temperature, and it leads the following result. (1) Phase change temperature is decreased due to freezing point depression phenomenon. Especially, it is minimized as $3.8^{\circ}C$ according to cooling source temperature in case that 0.5wt% of ethanol is added. (2) If 0.5wt% of ethanol is added, average supercooling degree is $0.9^{\circ}C$ and minimum supercooling is 0.8, $0.7^{\circ}C$ according to cooling heat source temperature. The restraint effect of supercooling is shown. (3) Specific heat shows tendency to decrease if ethanol is added. It is $3.013{\sim}3.048\;kcal/kg^{\circ}C$ according to cooling heat source temperature if 0.5wt% of ethanol is added. Phase change temperature higher than that of water and inhibitory effect against supercooling can be confirmed through experimental study on cooling characteristics of TMA 25wt%-water clathrate compound by adding additive, ethanol. This can lead to shorten refrigerator operation time of low temperature latent heat storage system and improve COP of refrigerator and efficiency of overall system. Therefore energy can be saved and efficiency can be improved much more.

  • The flow and heat/mass transfer in the falling-film of a heat exchanger can be influenced by the motion of the surrounding refrigerant vapor. In this study, the effect of the vapor flow direction on the absorption heat transfer has been investigated for a falling-film helical coil which is frequently used as the absorber of ammonia/water absorption refrigerators. The experiments were carried out for different solution concentration. The heat and mass transfer performance was measured for both parallel and counter-current flow. The effect of vapor flow on the heat and mass transfer is found to be increased with decreasing solution concentration. In the experiments with low solution concentration, whose vapor specific volume is great, the counter-current flow of vapor resulted in uneven distribution of falling-film and reduced the heat transfer performance of the absorber. The direction of the vapor flow hardly affected the thermal performance as the solution concentration became stronger since the specific volume of the ammonia/water vapor was much smaller than that of the water vapor.
