  • Flake graphite cast irons with the high damping capacity have been used for the control of vibration and noise occurring in the members of various mechanical structures under vibrating conditions. However, the damping capacity which is morphological characteristics of graphite is one of the important factors in reducing the vibration and noise, but hardly any work has deal with this problem. Therefore, the authors have examined the damping capacity of various cast irons with alloying elements and studied the influences of the matrix structures, mechanical properties and morphological characteristics of graphite. The main results obtained are as follows: Effects of pouring temperature on the damping capacities and mechanical properties were investigated in 3.6%C cast iron. At $1400^{\circ}C$, specific damping capacity showed the maximum value, and decreased with increase pouring temperature. Mechanical properties showed opposite trend with the damping capacity. And then, effects of Ni on the damping capacities and mechanical properties have been investigated in 3.6%C gray cast iron. At 0.2%Ni content, specific damping capacity showed the maximum value, and decreased with further increase in Ni content. Graphite length also showed same behavior. This indicates that the specific damping capacity has a close relation with graphite length. In case of Mo addition in 3.6%C-0.2%Ni cast iron, specific damping capacity and tensile strength was 27% and $20kgf/mm^2$ at 3.6%C-0.2%Ni-0.3%Mo cast iron respectively.

  • Effects of the amount of flake type graphite, morphology and (V,Mo)carbides on the specific damping capacity of austenitic low thermal expansion cast irons were investigated. Specific damping capacity(SDC) of low thermal expansion cast irons increased with the increased amount of graphite. Specific damping capacity of low thermal expansion cast iron decreased with the increased Young's modulus. In the case of V and Mo addition, SDC decreased with the increased amount of carbides. Specific damping capacity increased about 2% by the movement of magenetic domains which appeared in ferromagnetic materials.

  • Effects of Ti on damping capacity and mechanical properties are investigated in hot rolled Fe-17%Mn alloy. The existing damping alloy with Fe-Mn binary system was limited the use by high production cost, however in case of using scrap iron instead of pure iron although the content of carbon is higher it is possible to be applied wider field especially construction items because the production cost is lower. However, the excellent specific damping capacity is dropped due to the high content of carbon, we developed advanced type of damping alloy included Ti. TiC is formed with added Ti and it holds the specific damping capacity similar to existing damping alloy. The effect of Ti on damping capacity is found to be beneficial in carbon-containing alloy, which is attributed to the depletion of carbon solute due to the formation of TiC.

  • A modified 16-node element for composite plate has been proposed and compared with the 20-node element to check the validity of it. The fields of numerical inspection include mode analysis and specific damping analysis. By symetrizing the conventional unsymmetric damping matrix in the analysis of specific damping capacity, we could compute the specific damping capacity and make a program, effectively. In addition, we could predict the errors caused by reduction of integration order in thickness direction depending upon the number of layers.

This indicates that the specific damping capacity has a close relation with graphite continuity. On the other hand, the damping capacity in pearlite matrix showed superior to that in ferrite. In contrast, with increasing the Ni content, both tensile strength and hardness increased due to the decrease of graphite length and eutectic cell size.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of deformation induced martensite on the damping capacity of Fe-26Mn-4Co-2Al damping alloy. ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite were formed by cold working, and; deformation induced martensite was formed with according to the specific direction and the surface relief. With an increasing degree of cold rolling, the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite increased rapidly, while the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$-martensite decreased after rising to a maximum value at a specific level of cold rolling. Damping capacity was increased, and then decreased with an increasing of the degree of cold rolling. Damping capacity was influenced greatly by the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$-martensite formed by cold working, but the effect of the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite have a actually on effect on the damping capacity.

  • The Fe-Mn damping Alloys which combine a high damping capacity with good mechanical properties can provide attractive technical and economic solutions to problems involving fatigue, noise and vibration. This study is aimed at finding its applicability to divided spherical bearing in bridge. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1) The specific damping capacity of the Fe-Mn damping alloy is superior to that of SM490B. 2) The divided spherical bearing manufactured Fe-Mn damping alloy passes the load test to confirm applicability of that in bridge.

  • Coventional methods for reducing vibration in engineering designs (i.e. by stifferning or detuning) may be undesirable in conditions where size or weight must be minimized, or where complex vibration spectra exist. Some alloys with a combination of high damping capacity and good mechanical properties can provide attractive techanical and economical solutions to problems involving seismic, shock and vibration isolation. Although several non ferrous damping alloys have been developed, none of those materials are applied in any industrial factor due largely to high production cost. To meet these requirement, we have developed a new Fe-Mn high damping alloy. In previous studies, we have reported that an Fe-17%Mn alloy exhibits the highest damping capacity(Specific Damping Capacity:SDC, 30%) among Fe-Mn binary system, and proposed that the boundaries of various types such as $\varepsilon$-martensite variant boundaries, stacking faults in $\varepsilon$-martensite, stacking faults in austenitic and ${\gamma}$$\gamma /\varepsilon$ interfaces give rise to a high damping capacity. The Fe-17%Mn alloy also has advantages of good mechanical properties(T.S. 70 kg/nm$^2$ and low cost over other damping alloys(1/4 times the cost of non-ferrous damping alloy). Thus, the Fe-17%Mn high damping alloy can be widely applied to household appliances, automobiles, industrial facilities and power plant components. In this paper, the overall properties of the Fe-17%Mn high damping alloy is introduced, and its applicability to containment spray pump in the power plant is discussed.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of grain size on the damping capacity of the Fe-26Mn-4Co-2Al damping alloy. ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ were formed by cold working, and these martensites were formed with a specific direction and surface relief. With an increase in grain size, the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}-martensite$ increased by decrement the austenite phase stability. This volume fraction more rapidly increased in cold-rolled specimen than in the specimen that was not cold-rolled. The damping capacity also increased more with the augmentation an increased grain size and more rapidly increased in cold-rolled specimen than in the specimen that was not cold rolled. The effect of grain size on the damping capacity was larger in the cold-rolled specimen than the specimen that was not cold-rolled. Damping capacity linearly increased with an increase in volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}-martensite$. Thus, the damping capacity was affected by the ${\varepsilon}-martensite$.
