  • Eucalyptus pellita is one of the fast-growing tree species and has become predominant in Indonesian forest plantations. Meanwhile, tree breeding programs with clone development are the best way to provide greater genetic advantages. A better understanding of genetic control on growth and basic density in E. pellita is important for increasing wood productivity and quality. In this study, growth characteristics (tree height, diameter, and volume), basic density and its genetic parameters (heritability, genetic gain and genetic correlation) were determined. The number of clones tested in both trials was 50, divided into 5 blocks, and 5 trees/plot. The results showed that there were significant differences in growth and basic density among clones. There was an interaction between genetics and the environment further indicating the existence of unstable clones. The high heritability was found in tree height (0.82-0.86), diameter (0.82-0.90), and basic density (0.91-0.93). This implies that E. pellita has good opportunities for genetic improvement to increase wood productivity and quality. In addition, the results of genetic correlations among growth characteristics (height, diameter, and volume) and basic density showed positive moderate to highly significant value. It is suggested that these characters may be used to the advantage of the breeder for bringing improvement in these traits simultaneously. Therefore, this study provides important information of the genetic improvement of wood quality in E. pellita in Indonesia.

  • This study analyzed the status of the naturalized plants in islands in Jeollanamdo from an island biogeographic perspective. As a result of a floristic analysis at 47 inhabited islands and 194 uninhabited islands, 30 families and 134 species naturalized plants are reported. The most commonly occurring naturalized plant from 141 islands was Rumex crispus. The average number of naturalized plants by islands is 20.6 species (${\pm}14.22$) at the inhabited islands and 3.7 species (${\pm}3.89$) at the uninhabited islands. Presence of fifty nine naturalized species at Geumodo in Yeosu-si is the largest in number. The naturalization ratio, which is the ratio of naturalized plants to native plants, is 7.66% (${\pm}3.96$) in the inhabitable islands and 4.97% (${\pm}3.70$) in the uninhabitable islands. The naturalization ratio among islands of the West Sea in Jeollanam-do is 5.92% (${\pm}4.49$), and it is higher than 4.96% (${\pm}2.15$) in islands in the South Sea. Especially, the naturalization ratio at the inhabitable islands, i.e., 8.39% (${\pm}4.37$) at the islands of the West Sea is higher than 5.80% (${\pm}1.41$) at islands in the South Sea. The naturalization ratio of naturalized plants at the islands shows positive correlation with the size of the island (r=0.412, p<0.01), but the correlations with distance from the mainland and altitude above sea level are not significant. Eight ecosystem disturbing species designated by law are reported, and each species shows distinct distributional ranges. The regional differences in the number of naturalized plant species seem to be a result of the complex reflection of natural and human environmental factors, such as the degree of traffic between mainland and islands, degree of cultivation activities, along with the physical environmental differences. Since islands have limited habitats and resources, islands could be more vulnerable to the incoming species from outside, and environmental changes than mainland. Therefore, continuous monitoring and management against the naturalized plants in islands are needed.

  • Some substances and freezing tolerance in the mulberry (Morus species) branch have been studied on the basis of varietal differences and harvesting times along with harvesting methods in autumn. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. The highest freezing tolerance was shown in the varieties of Yongcheon-chou, Jasan, Kang-weon No. 3 and Ichihei, the medium in Roso. Kairyonezumigaeshi, Yanagida and Kokuso No. 28, and the lowest in Ichinose, Mokuso, Kokuso No. 21 and Suweousang No. 3. 2. There was a signifiant negative correlation (r= -0.59*) between death atop percentage in the field and the temperature required to kill 50% of the mulberry buds (T$_{50}$) with the harvesting times and methods in autumn. Cold hardening occurred in the early through the end of September with the peak at the mid-september. During this period, leaf harvest decreased freezing tolerance with remarkable decrease due to picking all the leaves and leaving several leaves at the base of branch. Greater cold hardening was induced by leaving several leaves after topping. 3. Negative correlations were observed between freezing tolerance and the contents of soluble (r =-0.70*) and crude (r= -0.70*) protein. However, positive correlations were shown between freezing tolerance and total carbohydrate contents per crude (r=0.31*) and per soluble (r=0.71*) protein . There were also positive correlations between freezing tolerance and total sugar (r=0.67*) and RNA content (r=0.99**). No relationships of dry matter. fat. total carbohydrate and DNA contents were observed to the freezing tolerance. 4. Such sugars as raffinose. lactose, sucrose, glucose, fructose. arabinose. xylose. ribose (assumed) and rhamnose were detected in winter mulberry branch. Major sugars such as sucrose, glucose, and fructose were supposed to have higher relationship to the freezing tolerance than the other sugars. 5. Late harvesting increased RNA content except in the case of total leaf picking at mid-September. Leaf picking decreased RNA content. Some amount of RNA was, however, maintained by leaving several leaves after topping Leaving upper-middle leaves of a branch showed high RNA content. Leaving young leaves at the top and the overmatured leaves at the base showed low content. A positive correlation (r=0.51*) was noted between RNA content and freezing tolerance in the different harvesting methods.s.

  • Fine particles ($PM_{2.5}$) were collected and analyzed from April 2010 through January 2011 in Chungju to investigate the characteristics of $PM_{2.5}$ and its ionic species. The annual mean concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$, $NO_3{^-}$, and $NH_4{^+}$ in the particulate phase were 40.84, 7.61, 7.14 and $3.74{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations were higher in fall and spring than in winter and summer. The elevated concentrations episodes are the main factor that enhanced the $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations in the fall. Among the major ionic species ${SO_4}^{2-}$ showed the highest concentration, followed by $NO_3{^-}$ and $NH_4{^+}$, $NO_3^-$ exhibited higher concentrations during the winter, but ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and $NH_4{^+}$ were not showed seasonal variation. The high correlations were found among $PM_{2.5}$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$, $NO_3{^-}$ and $NH_4{^+}$ during all seasons except for spring. The evaluation of backward trajectories and meteorological records show that the highest $PM_{2.5}$ concentration levels occurred during W-NW weather conditions, which influenced by the emission sources of China area. The low pollution levels generally occurred during E-S weather conditions, which influenced by the East Sea and south of the Yellow Sea. The elevated $PM_{2.5}$ mass concentrations arouse the concentration of $NO_3{^-}$, but no effects on ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and $NH_4{^+}$.

  • This study aims at restoring urban forest destructed and eliminated by industrialization, urbanization, and city development and presenting a direction to manage remaining urban forest ecologically. To this end, an experiment zone where Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee were selective cutted and a control zone where Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee were kept intact were created in Chongdam Park located in Kangnam-ku, Seoul. Then, the structural changes of herbaceous plant species, the growth of targeted woody plants, and the increase of the number of insect and bird species were examined. The conclusions reached in this study are as follows. First, for the sake of ecological restoration and management of urban forest, it is good to selective cutting. Although timing, frequency, and methods may vary depending on the features and types of urban forest, the study revealed that selective cutting contributes to the restoration speed of origin vegetation and the enhancement of biodiversity including plants and insects. Second, as for the correlations of selective cutting and the appearance of plant species, the growth of origin vegetation, and insect distribution, the study showed that the impact of meteorological environment such as brightness is much greater than that of soil environment. Third, in order to manage urban forest, tramping pressure needs to be controlled efficiently. The efficient control of tramping pressure would contribute in the appearance of herbaceous plants. It would also be beneficial in promoting biodiversity of birds by removing the impact of people using routes. Fourth, in order to enhance the overall biodiversity of urban forest, diverse environment needs to be provided. In particular, it is necessary to supply water that is insufficient in urban forest. Providing habitats such as forest wetland performs an important function to amphibians and birds that require water as well as the appearance of aquatic plants and insects. Therefore, ways to introduce water efficiently should be initiated.

  • Plasminogen activators (PAs) are serine proteases that convert plasminogen to plasmin. The PA/plasmin system has been associated with a number of physiological processes such as fibrinolysis, ovulation and fertilization. Although correlations have been reported between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oocyte maturation, the relationship between PA activity and ROS is unknown. The present study was undertaken to determine the effects of cumulus cells on PA activity in matured porcine oocytes under xanthine (X)-xanthine oxidase (XO) system. When oocytes were matured under the X-XO system, the proportion of oocytes remaining GV stage was higher (p<0.05) in oocytes without cumulus cells. The incidence of degenerated oocytes was higher (p<0.05) in the X+XO ($11.1{\pm}6.1$ and $21.6{\pm}3.4%$) than in the control group ($2.9{\pm}1.8$ and $4.0{\pm}1.6%$). The proportion of TUNEL-positive oocytes and activity of caspase-3 were higher (p<0.05) in cumulus-free oocytes and oocytes exposed to ROS. Tissue-type plasminogen activator-plasminogen activator inhibitor (tPA-PAI) and tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) activity were detected in oocytes that were separated from cumulus-oocytes complexs (COCs) at 44 h of maturation culture, and only tPA was produced in oocytes that were denuded before the onset of maturation culture. On the other hand, the activities of PA were increased (p<0.05) when oocytes were cultured under the X-XO system. The higher activity of tPA was observed in denuded oocytes (DOs) underwent apoptotic changes by oxidative stress. In COCs, however, tPA-PAI as well as tPA activity was detected and apoptotic changes such as DNA cleavage or caspase-3 activation were not observed. These results suggest that tP A may be relevant to apoptotic cell death in porcine oocytes by oxidative stress.

  • The dynamics and seasonal succession of dinoflagellate community, and their correlations with environmental parameters were investigated during the period from April, 1986 to March, 1987 at 6 selected stations in Masan Bay, Korea. The dinoflagellate standing crops varied extensively with months and stations: ranging from 44 to 2,789,900 cella/ l at surface layer and from 52 to 165,714 cells/ l at bottom layer, respectively. The distribution of standing crops by size class of dinoflagellate species showed that a group of 20-um size class was predominant throughout the present survey, since the most of dominant species have belonged to the size category. Among dominant species, Gyrodinium fissum was most dominant throughout the year in all sampling stations, particulary in June. Scripsiella trochoidea was predominant in May, Protoperidinium bipes and Prorocentrum minimum from June to September, Prorocentrum triestinum, P micans and Ceratium fusus from September to December, and Heterocapsa triquetra from December to April. The stepwise multiple regression analysis between dinoflagellate and environmental parameters revealed that salinity, nitrate-N, pH, and transparency were correlated with the variations of standing crops of dinoflagellate.

  • Plasminogen activators (PAs) are serine protease that cleave plasminogen to form the active protease plasmin and may participate in mammalian fertilization. Although correlations have been reported between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and sperm function, the relationship between PA activity and ROS is unknown. We determined the effects of ROS on sperm function and PA activities in boar spermatozoa preincubated under the X-XO system. When spermatozoa were treated with the X+XO group, a significant increase (p<0.05) was observed in the percentage of acrosome reacted spermatozoa compared with that of the control group. However, when antioxidants were added to the medium with X+XO, the rate of acrosome reaction tended to decrease. Also, a significantly lower percentage of acrosome reacted spermatozoa was observed in the X+XO+catalase group at 6 hr of incubation compared with that of X+XO group. The density of malondialdehyde (MDA) was higher in the X+XO group than in different treatment groups. In another experiment, incubation of spermatozoa in medium with X+XO was associated with a significant (p<0.05) increase in activity of tPA-PAI and tPA compared with the control group. Antioxidants decreased the increased activity of tPA-PAI and tPA by preincubation in the X-XO system. Also, a significantly lower (p<0.05) activities of tPA-PAI and tPA were observed in the X+XO+catalase group compared with the X+XO group. No significant differences, however, were observed in the activity of uPA. These results suggest that the increase of acrosome reaction by the X-XO system resulted in increase of PAs activity in the sperm incubation medium.

  • The temporal dynamics of the meiofauna community in Marian Cove, King George Island, Antarctica were observed from March 7 to December 21 2007. Nine meiofauna taxa were found, with nematodes the most dominant group, making up 92.97% of the total meiofauna density, followed by harpacticoid copepods (3.18%). Meiofauna abundance ranged from 123 to 874 individuals per 10 $cm^2$ (mean 464 inds.10 $cm^{-2}$), which is lower than that found in some polar and temperate regions. The lowest meiofauna abundance was found in the 26th April sample (III) and the highest meiofauna abundance was found in the March 23rd sample (II). There was no correlation between meiofauna abundance and season. The seasonal changes were likely caused by meltwater runoff, and there were the physical disturbances on the bottom sediment by huge iceberg. Biomass of meiofauna varied between 20.36 and 101.02 ${\mu}gC{\cdot}10\;cm^{-2}$, and overall mean biomass was 54.17 ${\mu}gC{\cdot}10\;cm^{-2}$ during the study periods. More than 80% of meiofauna was concentrated in the upper 2 cm of the sediment, and density decreased with depth. The mean diversity index was 0.37, and the ratio between the abundance of nematodes: and harpacticoids (N/C) ratio ranged from 7.31 to 95.04 (mean 26.39). NMDS analysis divided the community into three groups: A (III, IV, V, VII, VIII), B (II, IX, XI, XII) and C (I, V, X). The results of ANOSIM and SIMPER analysis revealed significant differences in community structure among three groups and major contributed meiofauna taxon in grouping were nematodes and copepods. No significant correlations were observed between major meiofauna taxon and environmental factors. Thirteen species in 12 genera representing nine families of harpacicoids were recorded. Ancorabolidae was the most diverse family, and Heteropsyllidae was the most abundant. The correlation analysis between benthic harpacticoid copepods and environmental factors showed that some species were affected by water temperature, sediment temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a concentration, grain size of the sediments and heavy metal contents of the sediments. These data describe the usefulness of benthic harpacticoid copepods as biological indicator species in Antarctic regions.
