  • We present the FIMS/SPEAR FUV continuum map of The Taurus - Auriga - Perseus (TPA) complex, which is one of the largest local association of dark clouds located in (l,b)~([152,180],[-28,0]). We also present the result of FUV dust scattering simulation, which is based on Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer(MCRT) technique. Before the simulation we generate the model cloud using Hipparcos 77834 stars and the calculation of their E(B-V). From the density-integrated image and the cross section image of the modeled cloud we confirmed that the Taurus cloud is located in ~130pc. The cloud north of the California nebula is known for its two layered structure and we confirm that using the cross section image of the modeled cloud. In our modeled cloud, that two clouds are located at ~130pc and at ~300pc, respectively. Over the whole region the result image of simulation is well correlated with the diffuse FUV observed with FIMS/SPEAR. The dense core of the Taurus cloud, however, is not revealed completely in the map.

  • In this study, various constituents and biological activities of different parts of asparagus were analyzed and compared. The Ca content was high in the leaves, K was significantly high in the top 25 cm of the spear, and Fe and Na were significantly high in the roots. The ascorbic acid, rutin, total polyphenol, and total flavonoid contents were high in the leaves, and the asparagine and glutathione contents were significantly high in the top 25 cm of the spear and roots, respectively. The bottom 5 cm of the spear had the highest saponin content compared with all other parts. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities were the highest in the leaves. The bottom 5 cm of the spear had the highest α-amylase inhibitory activity, whereas the stem showed the highest anti-inflammatory activity. These results suggest that the usually inedible parts of asparagus may be highly valuable as high-quality functional components owing to their antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities.

  • The aim of this study was to determine suitable oxygen transmission rate (OTR) films for modified atmosphere (MA) storage of asparagus spears (Asparagus officinalis L.), and to examine the related changes in asparagus spear quality. Asparagus spears were packed with 10,000, 20,000, 40,000, 70,000, and $100,000cc/m^2{\cdot}day{\cdot}atm$ OTR film treatments for MA storage, and perforated film (conventional storage) was used as the control. The fresh weight loss rate was less than 1% in all OTR film treatments but not in the control. In all OTR film treatments, ethylene content rapidly increased on the first day of storage, and gradually decreased thereafter to $2.0{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ by the final storage day. In the 10,000 cc and 20,000 cc OTR film treatments, carbon dioxide content was maintained within the permissible range for asparagus spears under recommended controlled atmosphere (CA) and MA conditions (5-12%). The oxygen content was maintained between 12% and 20% in all OTR film treatments. Hue angles and total chlorophyll content were highest in the 10,000 cc OTR film treatment in both tips and stems. Visual quality was maintained at a saleable level only in the 10,000 cc OTR film treatment until the final storage day (25 days). Based on sensory evaluation, the least off-odor was detected in the 10,000 cc OTR film treatment, and the most in the control treatment. While the soluble solids content decreased with all film treatments, it was maintained at the highest level in the 10,000 cc OTR film treatment. Vitamin C content decreased with all film treatments during storage, but was maintained at higher levels in the 10,000, 20,000, and 40,000 cc OTR film treatments. The firmness of tips and stems increased with storage duration in all film treatments, stems were firmer under the perforated film, 10,000, and 20,000 cc OTR film treatments. Given these results, the 10,000 cc OTR film treatment is considered the most appropriate for MA asparagus spear storage since visual quality and soluble solids content were maintained, and fresh weight loss, vitamin C content, off-odor, and yellowing were suppressed during storage.

  • Four new and two known species of soil nematodes belonging the order Dorylaimida are described and illustrated. Discolaimium gyeongiens n. sp. is 1.6~1.7 mm long, c=37~41, odontostyle 19~21$\mu\textrm{m}$ long and is characterized by having wider lip region and very short prerectum. Aporcelaimellus donghwaens n. sp. is 2.8~2.9mm long, c=40.0~4.5, odontostyle 19~20$\mu\textrm{m}$ long and is characterized by possessing shorter odontophore, presence of cardiac disc and conoid tail. Labronema korandus n. sp. is 2.2~2.3 mm long, c=68~81, odontostyle 27~28$\mu\textrm{m}$, spicule 61$\mu\textrm{m}$ long and is characterized by having continuous lip region, circular vulva and cylindrical tail. Zalophidera longus n. sp. is 4.1~4.4mm long, c=107~130, spear 80~93$\mu\textrm{m}$ long and is characterized by large sized body, spear and spear extension. Discolaimoides bulbiferous and Diphtherophora communis were reported here for the first time in Korea.

  • Peak or near-peak metamorphic temperatures and pressures for Seosan area could be estimated from major element method. Temperatures calculated from garnet-biotite geothermoneter(Ferry and Spear, 1978; Ganguly and Saxena, 1984) are $620{\pm}40^{\circ}C$ and $520{\pm}20^{\circ}C$ for Seosan and Daesan Formation respectively. Presures derived from garnet-plagiciase-$Al_2Si_O_2$-quartz geobarometer(Newton and Haselton, 1981; Ganguly and Saxena, 1984)suggest 5-6kb for both of Seosan and Daesan Formation. These results suggest that under isobaric, Seosan Formation underwent relatively high temperature metamorphism compared with Daesan Formation. Chemical zonations of garnet for major elements such as Fe, Mg, and Mn in Seosan and Dasan Formation show different patterns each other probably caused by different thermal history.

  • Difficulties are encountered when the behavior of complex systems (i.e., fuel failure probability) that have unreliable deterministic models is predicted. For more realistic prediction of the behavior of complex systems with limited observational data, the present study was undertaken to devise an approach of combining predictions from the deterministic model and actual observational data. Predictions by this method of combining are inferred to be of higher reliability than separate predictions made by either model taken independently. A systematic method of hierarchical pattern discovery based on the method developed in the SPEAR was used for systematic search of weighting factors and pattern boundaries for the present method. A sample calculation was performed for prediction of CANDU fuel failures that had occurred due to power ramp during refuelling process. It was demonstrated by this sample calculation that there exists a region of feature space in which fuel failure probability from the PROFIT model nearly agree with that from observational data.
