  • In this paper, we proposed an optimization technique for efficiently placing vehicles on decks in a vehicle-carrying ship to efficiently handle loading and unloading. For this purpose, we utilized the transformation method of the XML data representing the ship's spatial information, merging and branching algorithm and genetic algorithm, and implemented the function to visualize the optimized vehicle placement results. The techniques of selection, crossover, mutation, and elite preservation, which are used in the conventional genetic algorithms, are used. In particular, the vehicle placement optimization method is proposed by merging and branching the ship space for the vehicle loading. The experimental results show that the proposed merging and branching method is effective for the optimization process that is difficult to optimize with the existing genetic algorithm alone. In addition, visualization results show vehicle layout results in the form of drawings so that experts can easily determine the efficiency of the layout results.

  • The goal of solving a contiguous land acquisition problem is to find an optimal cluster of land parcels so that one can move from an acquired parcel to another without leaving the cluster. In many urban and regional planning applications, criteria such as acquisition cost and compactness of acquired parcels are important. Recent research has demonstrated that spatial contiguity can be formulated in a mixed integer programming framework. Spatial compactness, however, is typically formulated in an approximate manner using parameters such as external border length or other shape indices of acquired land parcels. This paper first develops an alternative measure of spatial compactness utilizing the characteristics of the internal structure of a contiguous set of land parcels and then incorporates this new measure into a mixed integer program of contiguous land acquisition problems. A set of computational experiments are designed to demonstrate the use of our model in a land acquisition context.

  • Shape optimization of a staggered herringbone groove micromixer using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis has been carried using Kriging model. The analysis of the degree of mixing is performed by the calculation of spatial data statistics. The calculation of the variance of the mass fraction at various nodes on a plane in the channel is used to quantify mixing. A numerical optimization technique with Kriging model is applied to optimize the shape of the grooves on a single wall of the channel. Three design variables, namely, the ratio of groove width to groove pitch, the ratio of the groove depth to channel height ratio and the angle of the groove, are selected for optimization. A mixing index is used as the objective function. The results of the optimization show that the mixing is very sensitive to the shape of the groove which can be used in controlling mixing in microdevices.

  • Metaheuristic algorithm is used to solve the weight minimization problem of truss structures considering shape, and sizing design variables. The cross-sectional areas of the line element in trusses are the design variables for size optimization and the changeable joint coordinates are the shape optimization used in this study. The design of plane and spatial truss structures are optimized by metaheuristic technique named Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO). Finite element analyses of structures and optimization process are carried out by the computer program visually developed by the authors coded in MATLAB. The four benchmark problems (trusses 2D ten-bar, 3D thirty-seven-bar, 3D seventy-two-bar and 2D two-hundred-bar) taken from literature are optimized and the optimal solution compared the results given by previous studies.

  • This paper investigates the variation of post-buckling behaviours of spatial structures after sizing optimization with linear assumptions. The mathematical programming technique is used to produce the optimum member size of spatial structures against external load. Total weight of structure is considered as the objective function to be minimized and the displacement occurred at loading point and member stresses of structures are used as the constraint functions. The finite difference method is used to calculate the design sensitivity of objective function with respect to design variables. The post-buckling analysis carried out by using the geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis code ISADO-GN. It is found to be that there is a huge difference between the post buckling behaviours of the initial and optimized structures. Therefore, the stability of optimized spatial structures with linear assumption should be throughly checked by appropriate nonlinear analysis techniques. Finally, the present numerical results are provided as benchmark test suite for future study of large spatial structures.

  • This paper deals with an optimization approach of 3D space placement of power components under volume and thermal constraints. It consists in optimizing semiconductors positions on a heat sink by respecting the components junction temperatures and minimizing the heat sink size. The aim is to remove risks on the 3D converter components placement and ensure their effective integration before carrying out the first physical prototype. This approach is based on coupling an optimization environment with a thermal finite element simulation tool. A pre-sizing step using analytical models is performed to set the optimization computations coupled to numerical simulation.

  • A continuum-based design sensitivity analysis (DSA) method fur non-shape problems is developed for geometrically nonlinear elastic structures. The non-shape problem is characterized by the design variables that are not associated with the domain of system like sizing, material property, loading, and so on. Total Lagrangian formulation with the Green-Lagrange strain and the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress is employed to describe the geometrically nonlinear structures. The spatial domain is discretized using the 4-node isoparametric plane stress/strain elements. The resulting nonlinear system is solved using the Newton-Raphson iterative method. To take advantage of the derived analytical sensitivity In topology optimization, a fast and efficient design sensitivity analysis method, adjoint variable method, is employed and the material property of each element is selected as non-shape design variable. Combining the design sensitivity analysis method and a gradient-based design optimization algorithm, an automated design optimization method is developed. The comparison of the analytical sensitivity with the finite difference results shows excellent agreement. Also application to the topology design optimization problem suggests a very good insight for the layout design.

  • In this paper, we propose a broadband beamforming method using the Spatial Response Variation (SRV) which is defined to measure the fluctuation of the array spatial response within the desired frequency band. By applying the SRV to regularization term, we achieve a good quality main beam width variation less than 1 degree within the desired frequency band. In design experiments, we show that the proposed method is better than the existing method.

  • "China's Western Development Policy" has brought multiple opportunities to the development of tourism in Southwest China including Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Chongqing and Tibet. The 4 provinces and 1 municipality overall show a certain degree of accumulation effect and coordinated development in tourism due to their location, traffic and traditional economic cooperation. This study takes the Southwest China as the research object and utilized the spatial dislocation model and the tourism spatial misalignment index to estimate the mismatch degree between tourism resources and tourism income among provinces and try to find out the internal reason background. The results show that each of the five provinces has its own advantages in index of economy, tourism resources, human resource, and transportation, leading to differences in the center of gravity of the entire region in all aspects. In view of the results of spatial dislocation analysis, suggestions for improvement and optimization are put forward to promote the high-quality development of tourism in Southwest region. development.

  • The effect of rebirthing technique on the genetic algorithm (GA)-based size optimization is investigated. The GA mimics the principles of nature and it can gradually improve structural design through biological operations such as fitness, selection, crossover and mutation. However, premature optimum has been often detected in the generic GA with continuous design variable. Since then, the so-called rebirthing technique has been proposed to avoid this problem. However, the performance of the rebirthing technique has not been reported. Therefore, the size optimizations of spatial structures are tackled to investigate the performance of the rebirthing technique on the generic GA. From numerical results, it is well proved that the rebirthing technique is very effective to produce the optimum values regardless of the values of parameters used in the GA operations.
