Effects of (-)-Sesamin on Memory Deficits in MPTP-lesioned Mouse Model of Parkinson's Disease

  • This study investigated the effects of (-)-sesamin on memory deficits in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-lesioned mouse model of Parkinson's disease (PD). MPTP lesion (30 mg/kg/day, 5 days) in mice showed memory deficits including habit learning memory and spatial memory. However, treatment with (-)-sesamin (25 and 50 mg/kg) for 21 days ameliorated memory deficits in MPTP-lesioned mouse model of PD: (-)-sesamin at both doses improved decreases in the retention latency time of the passive avoidance test and the levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, and homovanillic acid, improved the decreased transfer latency time of the elevated plus-maze test, reduced the increased expression of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, and increased the reduced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) and cyclic AMP-response element binding protein (CREB). These results suggest that (-)-sesamin has protective effects on both habit learning memory and spatial memory deficits via the dopaminergic neurons and NMDA receptor-ERK1/2-CREB system in MPTP-lesioned mouse model of PD, respectively. Therefore, (-)-sesamin may serve as an adjuvant phytonutrient for memory deficits in PD patients.

Research on Improving Memory of VR Game based on Visual Thinking

  • Based on visual Thinking theory, VR(virtual reality) game changes the traditional form of memory and maps the content into game elements to realize the immersive spatial memory mode. This paper analyzes the influencing factors of game design and system function construction. This paper proposes a hypothesis: with the help of visual thinking theory, VR game is helpful to improve learners' visual memory, and carries out research. The experiment sets different levels of game through empirical research and case analysis of memory flip game. For example, when judging two random cards. If the pictures are the same, it will be judged as the correct combination; if they are different, the two cards will be restored to the original state. The results are analyzed by descriptive statistical analysis and AMOS data analysis. The results show that game content using the concept of "Memory Palace", which can improve the accuracy of memory. We conclude that the use of spatial localization characteristics in flip games combining visual thinking can improve users' memory by helping users memorize and organize information in a Virtual environment, which means VR games have strong feasibility and effectiveness in improving memory.

The Instruction Flash memory system with the high performance dual buffer system (명령어 플래시 메모리를 위한 고성능 이중 버퍼 시스템 설계)

  • NAND type Flash memory has performing much researches for a hard disk substitution due to its low power consumption, cheap prices and a large storage. Especially, the NAND type flash memory is using general buffer systems of a cache memory for improving overall system performance, but this has shown a tendency to emphasize in terms of data. So, our research is to design a high performance instruction NAND type flash memory structure by using a buffer system. The proposed buffer system in a NAND flash memory consists of two parts, i.e., a fully associative temporal buffer for branch instruction and a fully associative spatial buffer for spatial locality. The spatial buffer with a large fetching size turns out to be effective serial instructions, and the temporal buffer with a small fetching size can achieve effective branch instructions. According to the simulation results, we can reduce average miss ratios by around 77% and the average memory access time can achieve a similar performance compared with the 2-way, victim and fully associative buffer with two or four sizes.

The Development and Validation of Memory Tasks Using Smart Devices for School Aged Children (학령기 아동용 스마트기기를 사용한 기억력 평가과제의 개발 및 타당도 검증 연구)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop auditory-verbal and visual-spatial memory tasks using smart devices for children aged 8 to 10 years and examine their validity. Methods: One-hundred and fourteen school-aged children were recruited through internet advertising. We developed memory tasks assessing auditory-verbal memory, visual-spatial memory, and working memory, and then examined their construct validity by examining the developmental trend of the children's mean scores with age. In order to examine the concurrent validity of the tasks, we conducted correlation analyses between the children's scores on the newly developed auditory-verbal, visual-spatial memory and working memory tasks and their scores on well-known standardized tests of memory and working memory, including the auditory-verbal memory subtests of the Korean Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery for Children, Korean Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test, digit span and arithmetic subtest of Korean Educational Development Institute Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Revised, and Corsi block test. Results: The memory and working memory scores measured by the newly developed tasks tended to increase with age. Further, there were significant correlations between the scores of the four cognitive tasks and the corresponding scores of the standardized assessment tools. Conclusion: This study revealed promising evidence for the validity of the memory tasks using smart devices, suggesting their utility for school-aged children in research and clinical settings.

  • Spatial distribution of injected electrons and holes is evaluated by using single-junction charge pumping technique in SONOS(Poly-silicon/Oxide/Nitride/Oxide/Silicon) memory cells. Injected electron are limited to length of ONO(Oxide/Nitride/oxide) region in locally ONO stacked cell, while are spread widely along with channel in fully ONO stacked cell. Hot-holes are trapped into the oxide as well as the ONO stack in locally ONO stacked cell.

  • Selectivity estimation for spatial query is curial in Spatial Database Management Systems(SDBMS). Many works have been performed to estimate accurate selectivity. Although they deal with some problems such as false-count, multi-count arising from properties of spatial dataset, they can not get such effects in little memory space.* Therefore, we need to compress spatial dataset into little memory. In this paper, we propose a new technique called MW Histogram which is able to compress summary data and get reasonable results. Our method is based on two techniques:(a)MinSkew partitioning algorithm which deal with skewed spatial datasets. efficiently (b) Wavelet transformation which compression effect is proven. We evaluate our method via real datasets. The experimental result shows that the MW Histogram has the ability of providing estimates with low relative error and retaining the similar estimates even if memory space is small.

A Preliminary Study of Computerized Cognitive Ability Enhancement Program Using Smart-Toy for Children (스마트 토이를 활용한 아동용 인지능력 증진 프로그램의 예비 효과 연구)

  • Objectives: This study was to examine the effectiveness of computerized cognitive ability enhancement program (CCAEP) using Smarttoy. The CCAEP using Smart-toy which can interact with children via bluetooth is a kids-friendly and convenient method for improving children's cognitive abilities by increasing their motivation for performing the program. We developed the CCAEP which designed to train auditory-verbal memory, visual-spatial memory, auditory-verbal working memory, and visual-spatial working memory. Methods: Eighteen children aged 8 to 10 participated in CCAEP individual training composed of 8 sessions of 40 minutes each for 4 weeks. The effect of the training was measured with Smart Toyweb's cognitive assessment tasks (smart device based assessment) as well as traditional neuropsychological tests before and after the training. Results: Children showed significant improvement in auditory-verbal memory, visual-spatial memory, auditory-verbal working memory and visual-spatial working memory abilities after the training. Conclusion: This study demonstrated promising results suggesting the effectiveness of CCAEP using Smart-Toy in clinical settings as well as school and home situations. Further controlled study with larger sample size including various clinical groups is needed to confirm the present results.

The Effect of Memory Load on Maintenance in Face and Spatial Working Memory: An Event-Related fMRI Study (기억부하가 얼굴과 공간 작업기억의 유지에 미치는 효과: 사건유관 fMRI 연구)

  • In order to evaluate the domain-specific model and process-specific model of spatial and nonspatial working memory (WM), this study manipulated the memory load of the delayed response task and examined how the neural correlates of memory load effect was influenced by the stimulus domain (face and location) at the maintenance stage of WM using an event-related fMRI experiment. One or three face stimuli were presented as target stimuli and participants were asked to maintain the face itself (face WM) or the location of face stimuli (spatial WM). The results of recognition judgment accuracy showed no difference between face WM and spatial WM, and showed equivalent memory load effects of both WM. As a result of brian image analysis, memory load effect at maintenance stage showed that inferior, middle, and superior PFC were recruited by both face WM and spatial WM, and showed that VLPFC was the commonly activated area by both WM, supporting functional specialization of PFC by process components of WM. This study provides evidence for process-specific model in which maintenance of WM is associated with VLPFC.

Fast NAND Flash Memory System for Instruction Code Execution

  • The objective of this research is to design a high-performance NAND flash memory system containing a buffer system. The proposed instruction buffer in the NAND flash memory consists of two parts, that is, a fully associative temporal buffer for temporal locality and a fully associative spatial buffer for spatial locality. A spatial buffer with a large fetching size turns out to be effective for serial instructions, and a temporal buffer with a small fetching size is devised for branch instructions. Simulation shows that the average memory access time of the proposed system is better than that of other buffer systems with four times more space. The average miss ratio is improved by about 70% compared with that of other buffer systems.

An Efficient Recovery System for Spatial Main Memory DBMS (공간 메인 메모리 DBMS를 위한 효율적인 회복 시스템)

  • Recently, to efficiently support the real-time requirements of LBS and Telematics services, interest in the spatial main memory DBMS is rising. In the spatial main memory DBMS, because all spatial data can be lost when the system failure happens, the recovery system is very important for the stability of the database. Especially, disk I/O in executing the log and the checkpoint becomes the bottleneck of letting down the total system performance. Therefore, it is urgently necessary to research about the recovery system to reduce disk I/O in the spatial main memory DBMS. In this paper, we study an efficient recovery system for the spatial main memory DBMS. First, the pre-commit log method is used for the decrement of disk I/O and the improvement of transaction concurrency. In addition, we propose the fuzzy-shadow checkpoint method for the recovery system of the spatial main memory DBMS. This method can solve the problem of duplicated disk I/O on the same page of the existing fuzzy-pingpong checkpoint method for the improvement of the whole system performance. Finally, we also report the experimental results confirming the benefit of the proposed recovery system.
