  • Traditional object decomposition techniques do not decompose spatial objects dynamically during spatial joins, because the object decomposition is very expensive. In this paper, we propose a modified object decomposition technique that can be applied in PBSM(Partition Based Spatial Merge-Join). In real-life data, there are much differences among the sizes of objects. We decompose only large objects with great effects on spatial joins. This technique decreases the decomposition cost of objects during spatial joins and enables efficient filter-refinement steps. Experiments show that the PBSM used with our proposed method performs significantly better than the traditional PBSM.

  • In this paper, the characteristic of intrinsic mode function(IMF) and its orthogonalization of ensemble empirical mode decomposition(EEMD), which is often used in the analysis of the non-linear or non-stationary signal, has been studied. In the decomposition process, the orthogonal IMF of EEMD was obtained by applying the Gram-Schmidt(G-S) orthogonalization method, and was compared with the IMF of orthogonal EMD(OEMD). Two signals for comparison analysis are adopted as the analytical test function and El Centro seismic wave. These target signals were compared by calculating the index of orthogonality(IO) and the spectral energy of the IMF. As a result of the analysis, an IMF with a high IO was obtained by GSO method, and the orthogonal EEMD using white noise was decomposed into orthogonal IMF with energy closer to the original signal than conventional OEMD.

  • A new method to decompose the footprints of marine atmosphere boundary layer (MABL) on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery into characteristic spatial scales is proposed. Using two-dimensional Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) we obtain three Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs), which mainly present longitudinal rolls, three-dimensional cells and atmospheric gravity waves (AGW). The rolls and cells have spatial scales between 3.0 km and 3.8 km and between 5.3 km and 7.1 km, respectively. Based on previous observations and mixed-layer similarity theory, we estimated MABL's depths that vary from 0.95 km to 1.2 km over the rolls and from 3.0 km to 3.8 km over the cells. The AGW has maximum spectrum at 14.3 km wavelength. The method developed in this work can be used to decompose other satellite imageries into individual features through characteristic spatial scales.

  • Practical non-synoptic fluctuating wind often exhibits nonstationary features and should be modeled as nonstationary random processes. Generally, the coherence function of the fluctuating wind field has time-varying characteristics. Some studies have shown that there is a big difference between the fluctuating wind field of the coherent function model with and without time variability. Therefore, it is of significance to simulate nonstationary fluctuating wind field with time-varying coherent function. However, current studies on the numerical simulation of nonstationary fluctuating wind field with time-varying coherence are very limited, and the proposed approaches are usually based on the traditional spectral representation method with low simulation efficiency. Especially, for the simulation of multi-variable wind field of large span structures such as transmission tower-line, not only the simulation is inefficient but also the matrix decomposition may have singularity problem. In this paper, it is proposed to conduct the numerical simulation of nonstationary fluctuating wind field in one-spatial dimension with time-varying coherence based on the wavenumber-frequency spectrum. The simulated multivariable nonstationary wind field with time-varying coherence is transformed into one-dimensional nonstationary random waves in the simulated spatial domain, and the simulation by wavenumber frequency spectrum is derived. So, the proposed simulation method can avoid the complicated Cholesky decomposition. Then, the proper orthogonal decomposition is employed to decompose the time-space dependent evolutionary power spectral density and the Fourier transform of time-varying coherent function, simultaneously, so that the two-dimensional Fast Fourier transform can be applied to further improve the simulation efficiency. Finally, the proposed method is applied to simulate the longitudinal nonstationary fluctuating wind velocity field along the transmission line to illustrate its performances.

  • This paper presents a new numerical method to analyse tensegrity structures by using singular value decomposition and force method. The tensegrity system consisting of compressive and tensle elements are pin-jointed system. Tensegrity structures, unlike the general structure should be preceded by form-finding. Tensegrity structures form-finding of the self-equilibrium stress stability, seeking to have the process. In this study, tensegrity structures when subjected to external loads, find the optimal pre-stress values was studied.

  • This paper proposes a novel framework for image fusion of satellite imagery to enhance spatial resolution of the image via structure-texture decomposition. The resolution of the satellite imagery depends on the sensors, for example, panchromatic images have high spatial resolution but only a single gray band whereas multi-spectral images have low spatial resolution but multiple bands. To enhance the spatial resolution of low-resolution images, such as multi-spectral or infrared images, the proposed framework combines the structures from the low-resolution image and the textures from the high-resolution image. To improve the spatial quality of structural edges, the structure image from the low-resolution image is guided filtered with the structure image from the high-resolution image as the guidance image. The combination step is performed by pixel-wise addition of the filtered structure image and the texture image. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation demonstrate the proposed method preserves spectral and spatial fidelity of input images.

  • This study generated the radar-based forecasted rainfall using spatial-scale decomposition method (SCDM) and evaluated the hydrological applicability with forecasted rainfall by KMA (MAPLE, KONOS) in terms of urban flood forecasting. SCDM is to separate the small-scale field (convective cell) and large-scale field (straitform cell) from radar rainfield. And each separated field is forecasted by translation model and storm tracker nowcasting model for improvement of QPF accuracy. As the evaluated results of various QPF for three rainfall events in Seoul and Metropolitan area, proposed method showed better prediction accuracy than MAPLE and KONOS considering the simplicity of the methodology. In addition, this study assessed the urban hydrological applicability for Gangnam basin. As the results, KONOS simulated the peak of water depth more accurately than MAPLE and SCDM, however cannot simulated the timeseries pattern of water depth. In the case of SCDM, the quantitative error was larger than observed water depth, but the simulated pattern was similar to observation. The SCDM will be useful information for flood forecasting if quantitative accuracy is improved through the adjustment technique and blending with NWP.

  • In this study an advanced domain decomposition method is suggested in order to construct surface models from very large amount of points. In this method the spatial domain of interest that is occupied by the input set of points is divided in repetitive manner. First, the space is divided into smaller domains where the problem can be solved independently. Then each subdomain is again divided into much smaller domains where the problem can be solved locally. These local solutions of subdivided domains are blended together to obtain a solution of each subdomain using partition of unity function. Then the solutions of subdomains are merged together in order to construct whole surface model. The suggested methods are conceptually very simple and easy to implement. Since RDDM(Repetitive Domain Decomposition Method) is effective in the computation time and memory consumption, the present study is capable of providing a fast and accurate reconstructions of complex shapes from large amount of point data containing millions of points. The effectiveness and validity of the suggested methods are demonstrated by performing numerical experiments for the various types of point data.

  • This paper presents an efficient contact detection algorithm for the plane elastostatic contact problem of the boundary element method(BEM). The data structures of the boundary element method are dissected to develop an efficient contact detection algorithm. This algorithm is consists of three parts as global searching, local searching and contact relation setting to reflect the corner node problem. Contact master and slave type elements are used in global searching step and quad-tree is selected as the spatial decomposition method in local searching step. To set up contact relation equations, global contact searching is conducted at node level and local searching is performed at element level. To verify the efficiency of the proposed contact detection algorithm of BEM, numerical example is presented.
