  • This paper introduces an improved modal pushover analysis (IMPA) which can effectively evaluate the seismic response of multi-span continuous bridge structures on the basis of modal pushover analysis (MPA). Differently from previous modal pushover analyses which cause the numerical unstability because of the occurrence of reversed relation between the pushover load and displacement, the proposed method eliminates this numerical instability and, in advance the coupling effects induced from the direct application of modal decomposition by introducing an identical stiffness ratio for each dynamic mode at the post-yielding stage together with an approximate elastic deformation. In addition to these two introductions, the use of an effective seismic load, calculated from the modal spatial force and applied as the distributed load, makes it possible to predict the dynamic responses of all bridge structures through a simpler analysis procedure than those in conventional modal pushover analyses. Finally, in order to establish validity and applicability of the proposed method, correlation studies between a rigorous nonlinear time history analysis and the proposed method were conducted for multi-span continuous bridges.

  • Two current approaches for modeling the vector magnetic hysteretic process are the vector Preisach models and those models based on a system of noninteracting pseudo-particles. The pseudo-particles are intended to mimic the average behavior of real media particles. The simplest switching mechanisms of pseudoparticles is the Stoner-Wholfarth model. The Preisach models are quite precise in specifying the experimental input to the models. The vector properties of the Preisach models are, however, inadequate. This is partly because of the questionable assumptions used in coupling the various vector hysteresis components. Also these models do not include reversible magnetization changes. Unlike Preisach counterpart, the Stoner-Wholfarth model is inherently vector in nature. This is because spatial distribution and switching mechanisms are imposed on the system of pseudo-particles, so they come closer to representing the physical reality. The lack of interaction between pseudo-particles exclude the usefulness of the Stoner-Wholfarth model for small fields when the medium is traversing minor loops. The present work is an attempt at combining the advantages of above two models into one composite model, including the effect of particle interaction.

  • A conservative pressure-based finite-volume numerical method has been developed for computing flow and heat transfer by using an unstructured grid system. The method admits arbitrary convex polyhedra. Care is taken in the discretization and solution procedures to avoid formulations that are cell-shape-specific. A collocated variable arrangement formulation is developed, i.e. all dependent variables such as pressure and velocity are stored at cell centers. Gradients required for the evaluation of diffusion fluxes and for second-order-accurate convective operators are found by a novel second-order accurate spatial discretization. Momentum interpolation is used to prevent pressure checkerboarding and the SIMPLE algorithm is used for pressure-velocity coupling. The resulting set of coupled nonlinear algebraic equations is solved by employing a segregated approach, leading to a decoupled set of linear algebraic equations fer each dependent variable, with a sparse diagonally dominant coefficient matrix. These equations are solved by an iterative preconditioned conjugate gradient solver which retains the sparsity of the coefficient matrix, thus achieving a very efficient use of computer resources.

  • By the need for high-speed data transmission in PCB, the studies on the optical PCB has been conducted with optical interconnection and its packaging technology. Particularly, the polymer-based optical interconnection has been extensively studied with the advantages such as cost-effective and ease of process. For high-efficiency and passive alignment, the studies were performed using the 45 degree mirrors, MT connector, and etc. In this work, integrated PLC device and fiber alignment array block was fabricated by using imprint technology to solve the alignment and array problem of optical device and the optical fiber. The fabricated integrated block for optical interconnection of PLC device has achieved higher precision of decreasing the dimensional error of the patterns by optimization of process and its insertion loss has an average value of 4.03dB, lower than criteria specified by international standard. In addition, a optical waveguide with built-in lens has been proposed for high-efficiency and passive alignment. By simulation, it was confirmed that the proposed structure has higher coupling efficiency than conventional no-lens structure and has the broad tolerance for the spatial offset of optical waveguide.

  • Station is an important building in high-speed railway, and its vibration and noise may significantly affect the comfort of waiting passengers. A coupling vibration model for train-structure system is established to analyze and evaluate the vibration level of a typical waiting hall under dynamic train load. The motion of a four-axle vehicle with two suspension system is modeled in multi-body dynamics with linear springs and dampers employed. The station is modeled as a whole finite element structure which is 113 m in longitudinal and 163.5 m in lateral, and the stiffness of the station foundation is considered. According to the assumptions that both wheel and rail are rigid bodies and keep contact to each other in vertical direction, and the wheel/rail interaction and displacement coordination in horizontal direction is defined by the simplified Kalker creep theory, the vehicle spatial vibration model has 27 degrees-of-freedom. An overall analysis procedure is made of the train moving through the station, by which the dynamic responses of the train and the station are calculated. According to the comparison between analysis and test results, the actual connection status between different parts of the station is estimated and the vibration level of the waiting hall is evaluated.

  • Large numbers of submarine pipelines are laid as the world now is attaching great importance to offshore oil exploitation. Free spanning of submarine pipelines may be caused by seabed unevenness, change of topology, artificial supports, etc. By combining Iwan's wake oscillator model with the differential equation which describes the vibration behavior of free-span submarine pipelines, the pipe-fluid coupling equation is developed and solved in order to study the effect of both internal and external fluid on the vibration behavior of free-span submarine pipelines. Through generalized integral transform technique (GITT), the governing equation describing the transverse displacement is transformed into a system of second-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) in temporal variable, eliminating the spatial variable. The MATHEMATICA built-in function NDSolve is then used to numerically solve the transformed ODE system. The good convergence of the eigenfunction expansions proved that this method is applicable for predicting the dynamic response of free-span pipelines subjected to both internal flow and external current.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide experimental evidence and theoretical background for the applicability of bilateral transfer paradigm to the rehabilitation programs for children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Children with hemiplegia, which means unilateral motor disabilities, display abnormal motor and postural patterns of the affected side due to hemiparesis, spasticity, and sensory disorders, resulting in a decreased motor abilities of the affected side compared to unaffected side. Accordingly, they tend to rely on the unaffected limb for everyday activities, which further deteriorates the functions of the affected side by causing associated reaction, abnormal postural patterns, and hypertonus. Rehabilitation programs developed for children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy include neurodevelopmental treatment, application of cast or splint to unaffected limb, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and task oriented model. These programs, however, have several drawbacks, such as discontinuity in treatment effect and psychological hatred to the force use of the affected side. In order to solve these problems and enhance the efficiency of the rehabilitation programs, it is required to maximize the use of the affected side without hatred. Characteristics of the control system, such as temporal coupling and spatial assimilation between limbs and neural crosstalk at different levels of central motor pathway, suggest that the bilateral transfer paradigm may enhance the efficiency of the rehabilitation programs for children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

  • In order to design the Linear DC Motor (LDM) with improved characteristics, transient and steady state analysis are required. furthermore, 3D analysis is also needed to analyze the precise characteristics like thrust, time harmonics. This paper deals with the transient and dynamic characteristic analysis of LDM by coupling of external circuit and motion equation using 3D Equivalent Magnetic Circuit Network Method (EMCN). For the three dimensional analysis of electric machine, EMCN is very effective method that ensures high accuracy similar to FEM and short computation time. Also, The modeling by EMCN easily allows the mover to move with respect to the stater at each time step, and the spatial moving step is determined by the solution of the mechanical motion equation and the computed electromagnetic thrust The results are compared with experimental ones to clarify the usefulness and verify the accuracy of the Proposed method.
