  • In this paper, we propose a new video watermarking method exploiting the human visual system (HVS) to find effective locations. in the video frames which make the watermark robust and imperceptible simultaneously. In particular, we propose a new HVS-optimized weighting map for hiding the watermark by considering HVS in three different aspects : frequency, spatial, and motion masking effects. The global masking map is modeled by combining the frequency masking, the spatial masking, and the motion masking. In this paper, we use a watermark which is generated by the bitwise exclusive-OR operation between a logo image and a random sequence. The amount of watermarks is weighted by a control parameter. Furthermore, we embed the watermark in the uncompressed video sequence for the general watermarking method available to various coding schemes. Simulation results show that the watermark is imperceptible and the proposed method is good for watermark capacity. It is also demonstrated that the proposed method is robust against various attacks, such as MPEG coding, MPEG re-encoding, and frame attacks.

  • Spatial and temporal aspects of toxic dinoflagellate Cochlodinium.p blooms and consequences of physical features in complex coastal ecosystems, off the southern Korean coast, have been investigated using data obtained from SeaWiFS and AVHRR as well as in-situ observations. Hydrographic parameters measured using CTD sensors were used to elucidate physical factors affecting the spatial distribution and abundance of Cochlodinium.p blooms. The results show spatial and temporal variations of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and sea surface temperature (SST) and reveal significant information about Cochlodinium.p blooms and process underlying their evolution. Satellitederived Chl-a estimates appear to be potential in explicating the evolution, movement and distribution of Cochlodinium.p blooms in the enclosed bays of the South Sea. The existence of thromohaline waters offshore provide favorable conditions for the rapid growth and subsequent southward initiation of Cochlodinium.p blooms that are influenced to flow on the offshore branch (OB) during September. It was observed that there was a significant variation in the sun-induced chlorophyll-a fluorescence signal in the remote sensing fluorescence spectra and its high-intensity was recognized during the period of exponential growth and physical transport. Satellite-derived Chl-a concentration during September 1999 ranged between $360mg/m^3$ inside the Jin-hae and adjacent Bays and $1-6mg/m^3$ in offshore waters, with varying Cochlodinium.p abundances 1500 to 26000 cells $ml^{-1}.$ The closely spaced CTD surveys and satellite-derived SST give a complete overview on the initiation of Cochlodinium.p blooms in hydrodynamically active regions of the offshore southern East Sea by the influence of Tsushima Warm Current (TWC).

  • This study provides a descriptive and analytical account of major aspects of urban development and transformation of housing types of Italian Firenze from the 13th century to the 19th century. It is a typo-morphological depiction of urban spatial structure of the extraordinary city, Firenze, the center of Italian Renaissance. And this study has proceeded on the assumption that the evolving form of the urban structure and housing types cannot be understood without reference to the larger context of political, economic, and social life. Based on these backgrounds, the purpose of this study is threefold: to provide a comprehensive discussion of general characteristics of urban spatial structure of Firenze, and to explain the process of formation of working-class neighborhoods by constructing new city wall in later 13th century, and to discuss transformation of housing types of the working-class neighborhood with understanding the mechanism of existence of housing in the newly formed residential neighborhoods. The development of residential neighborhoods was pursued by 'planned' manner through forming square-shaped blocks, and characterized by the subdivision of larger properties into standardized building lots for the construction of houses. On the bases of documentary evidences, several ecclesiastical institutions are identified as the agents of a distinctive type of development. While the institutions did the major role for developing lands, the construction of houses was done by small scale construction agents with moderate amount of properties. The major housing type of working-class neighborhoods of Firenze has been the 'casa a schiera' characterized by the form of narrow front and long depth. The type was generalized by the newly formed middle and working-class of Firenze which grew their body very rapidly, Even though the type assumed very uniform in its fen there were many variations. And through passing time, the casa a schiera developed to be multi-family housing, and the level of variation became deepen. Eventually, transformation of housing type of Firenze was ended by appearance of the 'casa in linea', which was very similar to modern apartment in its spatial organization.

  • To solve the emerging geospatial problems, more creative and effective spatial information infrastructures are required. To solve the emerging geospatial problems at a national level, this study assumes that the current Korean NSDI considered descriptive needs to be more prescriptive. The future NSDI will require a more useful integration vehicle for matters and places of national importance such as national security and emergency prevention and management. The purpose of this study is to identify "What can be done for the Korean NSDI to be more prescriptive?" This study reviews previous researches and new SDI concepts, analyzes the Korean NSDI in terms of a descriptive NSDI, and proposes a prescriptive NSDI model for Korean geospatial problems. The model includes new aspects of an advanced NSDI and several tasks for the future prescriptive Korean NSDI.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the usage characteristics and the role of spatial and social psychology of open spaces in urban neighborhoods. The survey for this study was conducted on 318 residents in Gyungsan. For analysis, the frequencies and means were calculated, the chi-square test, t-test, and analysis of variance were performed. Survey results revealed that, first, not only the preferred open space type but also the usage characteristics by gender were different. The tendency for males was to visit open spaces to exercise and to stay for longer than one hour. However, the females visited open spaces to care for their children and meet friends or neighbors. They also visited more often than males but stayed for a shorter time. Second, females tended to consider the open space as a place for rest and leisure. Females valued the social psychology aspects of the open space function. Third, regarding the spacial role of open space in urban neighborhoods, study participants believed that the waterside parks improve the quality of life, but were concerned for the safety of children. Considering the social psychology role of open spaces, study participants regarded the waterside parks as improving emotional health. Particularly, they believed the waterside parks played a greater role in daily life as a place for meeting, resting, and leisure than other open space types such as playground, children's parks, and sport parks.

  • In modern times, numerous cities are competing to create the unique skyline adjacent to the water. Tall buildings located across the river have a great contribution to the skyline of a riverfront city and can be a precious asset for the city. Moreover, in several cities, tall buildings and their impact on the urban skyline are a matter that should be considered and regulated in urban design. Therefore, as a prominent element in a larger visual setting of the city, tall buildings should improve the visual quality of the skyline rather than diminish that quality. This research attempts to provide an objective method to analyze the visual quality of the skyline made by a group of tall buildings through their feature of heights and spatial arrangement from riverfront views. The analysis is determined by the design variables of building heights variation, heights transition, density, and spacing of a group of tall buildings. A comparative case study of tall buildings in Yeouido and Lujiazui was conducted to prove the effectiveness of the analysis. The proposed method can be used in a simple way in the quantitative approach to quantify the visual quality of the skyline. In conclusion, Yeuido's skyline is not quite interesting from the riverfront view in terms of height variation and continuity of the skyline view because they are dispersed. Conversely, Lujiazui's skyline from the riverfront vantage points has a good quality in all aspects of the feature of height and spatial arrangements of tall buildings cluster. These factors can be used for the urban designer on how proposed tall buildings within the cluster should appropriately respond to adding image on the skyline.

  • The objectives of this study are to analyze the spatial site characteristics of existing tombs and the change in the pattern of spatial distributions of tombs over time. The spatial distributions of tombs located in Honam province along the Honam expressway were investigated by interpreting digital aerial photographs taken in two different points of time; 1990 and 2000. According to the results of the study, the tombs newly observed in 2000 photos were located closer to roads and villages than those found in the photos of 1990. This is a finding indicating that the accessibility of tombs has been more important consideration in determining the location of tomb sites. Also found were the gentle slopes of southern aspects to be favored as tomb sites. Based on the data sets of tombs locations and their topographic site characteristics, the probability function of tombs appearance in the study area was derived using the logistic regression analysis technique. As a result, tomb sites were classified as 74.7% by logistic regression. All of six input factors (elevation, slope, aspect, distance from the roads, the town and the stream, respectively) affected the probability of tombs appearance significantly.

  • The virtual reality consists of a virtual space constructed similar to the reality and agents residing in it. Our virtual space refers to an orderly space that is governed by such physical properties as mass, gravity, friction, and associated rules on top of the usual visual rendering. To construct this virtual world we are to develop virtual agents behaving like humans and the environment surrounding them. In order to improve the existing reactive agents designed to act to their designers' dictation in predetermined space or memory into autonomous agents, we need diverse kinds of knowledge among others related to the spaces for the agents to act in. Our design and implementation focuses on the spatial knowledge among those diverse aspects of knowledge required. The developed knowledge representation scheme is used on a basis for realistic and efficient physical cyber-environment, and as the knowledge structure to simulate the virtual agents' knowledges on spaces.
