An experimental study is performed to analyze flow structures behind a local suction/blowing in a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer, The local forcing is given to the boundary layer flow by means of a sinusoidally oscillating jet issuing from a thin spanwise slot at the wall. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness is about $Re_{\theta}=1700$. The effects of local forcing are scrutinized by altering the forcing frequency $(0.011{\leq}f^+{\leq}0.044)$. The forcing amplitude is fixed at $A_0=0.4$. It is found that a small local forcing reduces the skin friction, and this reduction increases with the forcing frequency. A phase-averaging technique is employed to capture the coherent structures. Velocity signals are decomposed into a periodic part and a fluctuating part. An organized spanwise vortical structure is generated by the local forcing. The larger reduction of skin friction for the higher forcing frequencies is attributed to the diminished adverse effect of the secondary vortex. An investigation of the random fluctuation components reveals that turbulent energy is concentrated near the center of vortical structures.

Direct numerical simulations were performed to investigate the physics of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer flow subjected to spanwise oscillating electromagnetic forces in the near wall region. A fully implicit fractional step method was employed to simulate the flow. The mean flow properties and the Reynolds stresses were obtained to analyze the near-wall turbulent structure. It is found that skin friction and turbulent kinetic energy can be reduced by the electromagnetic forces. The decrease in production is responsible fur the reduction of turbulent kinetic energy. Instantaneous flow visualization techniques were used to observe the response of streamwise vortices and streak structures to spanwise oscillating forces. The near-wall vortical structures are affected by spanwise oscillating electromagnetic forces. Following the stopping of the electromagnetic force, the flow eventually relaxes back to a two-dimensional equilibrium boundary layer.
Direct numerical simulations are peformed to investigate the physics of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer flow suddenly subjected to spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces in the near-wall region. The Reynolds number based on the inlet momentum thickness and free-stream velocity is $Re_\theta=300$. A fully-implicit fractional step method is employed to simulate the flow. The mean flow properties and the Reynolds stresses are obtained to analyze the near-wall turbulent structure. It is found that skin-friction and turbulent kinetic energy can be reduced by the electro-magnetic forces. Instantaneous flow visualization techniques are used to observe the response of streamwise vortices to spanwise oscillating forces. The near-wall vortical structures are clearly affected by spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces.

Direct numerical simulations were performed to analyze the effects of time-periodical blowing through a spanwise slot on a turbulent boundary layer. The blowing velocity was varied in a cyclic manner from 0 to 2A$^{+}$(A$^{+}$ =0.25, 0.50 and 1.00) at a fixed blowing frequency of f$^{+}$=0.017. The effect of steady blowing (SB) was also examined, and the SB results were compared with those for periodic blowing (PB). PB reduced the skin friction near the slot, although to a slightly lesser extent than SB. PB was found to generate a spanwise vortical structure in the downstream of the slot. This vortex generates a reverse flow near the wall, thereby reducing the wall shear stress. The wall-normal and spanwise turbulence intensities under PB are increased as compared to those under SB, whereas the streamwise turbulent intensity under PB is weaker than that under SB. PB enhances more energy redistribution than SB. The periodic response of the streamwise turbulence intensity to PB is propagated to a lesser extent than that of the other components of the turbulence intensities and the Reynolds shear stress.

This paper presents a direct numerical simulation of turbulent flows over a bump in an open channel to examine the turbulence characteristics near divergent waves emanating from the bump and to investigate the interaction of the turbulences with the divergent waves. To verify the reliability of the simulations, the mean velocity profile and root-mean-square of velocity fluctuations are compared with previous data. The anisotropic invariant maps show that the ratio of the streamwise to spanwise velocity fluctuations plays an important role in characterizing the anisotropic nature of the separated shear layer behind the bump in the vicinity of the free surface. The vortex identification discloses a large-scale streamwise vortical structure from the mean velocity field and a cluster of small coherent structures from the instantaneous velocity field, which are responsible for the anisotropic characteristics of the turbulence beneath the free surface.
An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of periodic blowing and suction on a turbulent boundary layer. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to probe the characteristics of the flow. The local forcing was introduced to the boundary layer via a sinusoidally-oscillating jet issuing from a thin spanwise slot. Three forcing frequencies (f$^{+}$=0.044, 0.066 and 0.088) with a fixed forcing amplitude (A$^{+}$=0.6) were employed at $Re_{=690. The effect of the forcing angles ($\alpha$=60$^{\circ}$ , 90$^{\circ}$ and 120$^{\circ}$ ) was investigated under the fixed forcing frequency (f$^{+}$=0.088). The PIV results showed that the wall region velocity decreases on imposition of the local forcing. Inspection of phase-averaged velocity profiles revealed that spanwise large-scale vortices were generated in the downstream of the slot and persist further downstream. The highest reduction in skin friction was achieved at highest forcing frequency (f$^{+}$=0.088) and a forcing angle of $\alpha$=120$^{\circ}$. The spatial fraction of the vortices was examined to analyze the skin friction reduction.

This paper describes the flow measurements inside the blade passage of an axial flow fan by using a rotating hot-wire probe sensor from a relative flame of reference fixed to the rotor blades. The validity of fan rotor designed by a streamline curvature equation was performed by the measurement of the three-dimensional flow upstream and downstream of the fan rotor using a 5-hole pitot tube. The vortical flow structure near the rotor tip can be clearly observed by the measurements of a relative velocity and its fluctuation on quasi-orthogonal planes to a tip leakage vortex. Larger vortical flow, which results in higher blockage in the main flow, is formed according to decrease a flow rate. The vortical flow spreads out to the 30 percent span from the rotor tip at near stall condition. In the design operating condition, the tip leakage vortex is moved downstream while the center of the vortex keeps constant in the spanwise direction. Detailed characteristics of a velocity fluctuation with relation to the vortex were also analyzed.

An experimental study was made of a large-scale vortical structure over a backward-facing step. The Reynolds number based on the step height was R $e_{H}$ =33,000. To recognize the large-scale vortex, three components of velocity were measured. The measurements were performed in the recirculation zone (x/H=4.0) and the reattachment zone(x/H=7.5). To measure the wall pressure fluctuations in a turbulent flow over a backward-facing step, a 32-channel microphone array was installed beneath the wall in the streamwise and spanwise directions. From the measured pressure field, the size of large-scale vortex was obtained. As a detailed study, a conditionally-averaging technique was employed to characterize the coherent structure of the large-scale vortex. To see the relationship between the flow field and the relevant spatial mode of the pressure field, the spatial box filtering (SBF) was examined. A cross-correlation between velocity and pressure fluctuations was performed to identify the structure and the length scale of the large-scale vortex.x.
The vortical structures in a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) developed over a flat plate have been investigated experimentally. The flow conditions tested in this study were Re$_{\theta}$ = 3700, Re$_{\delta}$ = 11${\times}$105 and the shape factor H = 1.3. Instantaneous velocity fields in the streamwise-wall-normal planes were measured by using a dynamic PIV system. A trip-wire and sandpapers were placed behind the leading edge to promote the turbulent transition. 1000 velocity fields were obtained consecutively with a time interval of 1 millisecond. Streamwise u-velocity components were temporally averaged in the measuring plane. In addition, 2000 velocity fields were obtained randomly and ensemble-averaged to get the fully-developed turbulent characteristics. Profiles of the normalized u-component, turbulent intensities and Reynolds shear stress were evaluated. The structures of spanwise vortices were extracted from the instantaneous velocity fields by determining the swirling strength, ${\lambda}_{ci}$. The wall-normalized locations of vortices were temporally averaged in the measuring plane with respect to their rotational direction. The correlations between the temporally averaged u and the temporally averaged $y^+$ of vortices were evaluated. For the case of positive vortices, the correlation is not significant. However, the negative vortices show a strong negative correlation. The y-location of negative vortices tends to increase, as the averaged u decreases and vice versa. These findings indicate that the number of negative vortices in the outer layer increases during the outward bursting events.
Aerodynamic effects, such as drag force and flow-induced vibration (FIV), on civil engineering structures can be minimized by optimally modifying the structure shape. This work investigates the turbulent wake of a square prism with its faces modified into a sinusoidal wave along the spanwise direction using three-dimensional large eddy simulation (LES) and particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques at Reynolds number $Re_{Dm}$ = 16,500-22,000, based on the nominal width ($D_m$) of the prism and free-stream velocity ($U_{\infty}$). Two arrangements are considered: (i) the top and bottom faces of the prism are shaped into the sinusoidal waves (termed as WSP-A), and (ii) the front and rear faces are modified into the sinusoidal waves (WSP-B). The sinusoidal waves have a wavelength of $6D_m$ and an amplitude of $0.15D_m$. It has been found that the wavy faces lead to more three-dimensional free shear layers in the near wake than the flat faces (smooth square prism). As a result, the roll-up of shear layers is postponed. Furthermore, the near-wake vortical structures exhibit dominant periodic variations along the spanwise direction; the minimum (i.e., saddle) and maximum (i.e., node) cross-sections of the modified prisms have narrow and wide wakes, respectively. The wake recirculation bubble of the modified prism is wider and longer, compared with its smooth counterpart, thus resulting in a significant drag reduction and fluctuating lift suppression (up to 8.7% and 78.2%, respectively, for the case of WSP-A). Multiple dominant frequencies of vortex shedding, which are distinct from that of the smooth prism, are detected in the near wake of the wavy prisms. The present study may shed light on the understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms of FIV control, in terms of passive modification of the bluff-body shape.
