Seismic performance of RC-column wrapped with Velcro

  • A seismic strengthening method using Velcro is proposed to improve the seismic performance of columns in RC frame structures. The proposed method was evaluated experimentally using three fabricated RC specimens. Velcro was wrapped around the columns of the RC-frame specimen to prevent concrete spall falling. The reinforcing performance of the Velcro was determined from comparison of results on seismic performance (i.e., strength, displacement, failure mode, displacement ductility capacity and amount of dissipated energy). As the displacement of the reinforced specimens was increased, the amount of dissipated energy increased drastically, and the displacement-ductility-capacity of the reinforced specimens also increased. The final failure mode of RC frame structure was changed. As a result, it was concluded that the proposed seismic strengthening method using Velcro could be used to increase the displacement ductility of RC columns, and could be used to change the final failure mode of RC-frame structures.

  • 발파작업에서 발생하는 공해로 인한 재산상의 피해나 정신적인 피해를 최소화하기 위하여 대부분의 현장에서 제어발파를 시행하고 있다. 이완식 제어발파는 발파의 규모가 일반발파와 비교하여 작고, 대상 구조물이 근거리에 위치하므로 그 전달특성이 다를 수 있다. 근거리에서 계측된 발파진동의 특징은 고주파이고 진동의 지속시간이 짧다. 본 연구는 국내의 8개 지역에서 계측한 자료를 분석하여 이완식 제어발파의 진동전달 특성에 관하여 국내의 현장에서 시공 전에 진동을 추정할 수 있는 진동전파식을 제안하였다. 또한 제어발파시에 사용하는 폐타이어를 부착한 철재매트에 의한 폭풍압의 저감 효과와 전달특성을 분석하였다.

  • Reinforced concrete(RC) column-bent piers represent one of the popular piers used in highway bridges of Korea. Seismic performance of RC column-bent piers under bi-directional seismic loadings was experimentally investigated. Six column bent piers were constructed with two circular supporting columns which were made in 400 mm diameter and 2,000 mm height. Test parameters are different transverse reinforcement ratio and loading pattern. Three specimens were loaded with bi-directional lateral forces which were main cyclic loads in the longitudinal direction and sub-cyclic loads in the transverse direction. Other three specimens were loaded in the opposite way. Test results indicated that lateral strength and ductility of the latter specimens were bigger than those of the former specimens. Plastic hinge was formed with the spall of cover concrete and the fracture of the longitudinal reinforcing steels in the bottom part of two supporting columns for the former three specimens. Similar behavior was observed in the top and bottom parts of two supporting columns for the latter three specimens.

건전성예측 및 관리기술 연구동향 및 응용사례 (A review on prognostics and health management and its applications)

  • Objective of this paper is to introduce a new technology known as prognostics and health management (PHM) which enables a real-time life prediction for safety critical systems under extreme loading conditions. In the PHM, Bayesian framework is employed to account for uncertainties and probabilities arising in the overall process including condition monitoring, fault severity estimation and failure predictions. Three applications - aircraft fuselage crack, gearbox spall and battery capacity degradation are taken to illustrate the approach, in which the life is predicted and validated by end-of-life results. The PHM technology may allow new maintenance strategy that achieves higher degree of safety while reducing the cost in effective manner.

Leveraging artificial intelligence to assess explosive spalling in fire-exposed RC columns

  • Concrete undergoes a series of thermo-based physio-chemical changes once exposed to elevated temperatures. Such changes adversely alter the composition of concrete and oftentimes lead to fire-induced explosive spalling. Spalling is a multidimensional, complex and most of all sophisticated phenomenon with the potential to cause significant damage to fire-exposed concrete structures. Despite past and recent research efforts, we continue to be short of a systematic methodology that is able of accurately assessing the tendency of concrete to spall under fire conditions. In order to bridge this knowledge gap, this study explores integrating novel artificial intelligence (AI) techniques; namely, artificial neural network (ANN), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and genetic algorithm (GA), together with traditional statistical analysis (multilinear regression (MLR)), to arrive at state-of-the-art procedures to predict occurrence of fire-induced spalling. Through a comprehensive datadriven examination of actual fire tests, this study demonstrates that AI techniques provide attractive tools capable of predicting fire-induced spalling phenomenon with high precision.

폭발 손상을 입은 강섬유 및 FRP 시트 보강 철근콘크리트 보의 국부손상 및 잔류성능 평가 (Evaluation of Local Damages and Residual Performance of Blast Damaged RC Beams Strengthened with Steel Fiber and FRP Sheet)

  • 본 연구에서는 폭발에 의한 국부손상이 철근콘크리트 보의 잔류 휨강도 및 연성에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위하여 $160{\times}290{\times}2200mm$의 철근콘크리트 보에 대하여 근접 폭발 시험과 정하중 휨시험을 수행하였다. 또한 이 시험을 통해 강섬유 및 FRP 시트로 보강한 철근콘크리트 보의 폭발저항성능을 평가하였다. 장약량 1kg, 이격거리 0.1m의 폭발 시험을 수행하였으며, 시험 후 시험체의 crater, spall 지름과 무게손실(weight loss)을 측정하여 시험체의 국부손상을 평가하였다. 또한 폭발하중을 받지 않은 시험체와 폭발하중을 받아 국부손상이 발생한 시험체의 정하중 휨시험을 수행하여 휨강도 및 연성지수를 측정하였다. 시험결과, 보통콘크리트 시험체(NC)는 비교적 큰 crater와 spall이 발생하였으며 국부손상에 의한 무게 손실이 23.5kg 발생하였다. 반면 강섬유보강콘크리트 시험체(SFRC)와 FRP 시트 보강 시험체(NC-F, NC-FS)는 NC에 비해 crater 크기와 무게손실이 감소하며 향상된 폭발저항성능을 나타내었다. 또한 폭발하중에 의해 국부손상이 발생한 시험체들은 휨강도와 연성지수가 감소하였다. 특히 NC는 잔류 휨강도가 기존 강도에 비해 크게 감소하였고 압축철근의 좌굴현상이 나타나며 취성적으로 파괴되었다. 강섬유와 FRP 시트로 보강한 시험체의 경우 잔류 휨강도 및 연성지수가 NC에 비해 증가하였다. 이를 통해 폭발이 발생할 경우, 충분한 이격거리를 확보하지 못하면 장약량이 적더라도 구조부재에 심각한 국부손상을 발생 시킬 수 있다는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 강섬유와 FRP 시트에 의한 보강 방법이 폭발저항성능을 향상시킨다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • 이 논문은 전투차량의 주 장갑재료로 사용되는 금속장갑재료의 개발현황 및 방탄성능에 영향을 미치는 조직학적 요인들을 중심으로 방탄성 향상을 위한 요소기술을 살펴보고, 향후 금속장갑재의 발전전망에 대하여 서술하였다. 금속장갑재는 요구되는 방호특성에 따라 사용되는 합금계가 다르지만 강도와 인성을 최적화하여 위협 탄에 대한 관통저항성 및 취성파단에 대한 저항성을 극대화하는 것이 필요하며, 이를 위해서는 금속재료의 방탄조건에서 특정적으로 나타나는 단열전단현상을 이해하고 적절히 제어하는 기술이 요구된다.

압연롤 검사를 위한 다중 센서 와전류 탐상 검사 시스템 개발 (Development of Multi-channel Eddy Current System for Inspection of Press Rolls)

  • Press rolls are constantly exposed to physical and heat stresses on their surface and are prone to crack, bruise, and spall if the accumulated stress goes beyond the critical point. Such surface phenomenon can cause them to lose their functionality and eventually lead to a halted production line. Eddy current testing can be considered a useful method to investigate the surface of the roll. The method involves the application of a high intensity magnetic field onto the surface of the roll, and thereby finding any early stage of possible defects. When the method was applied for roll inspection, the cross section of the sensor was regulated as per the overall testing speed. A smaller cross sectional area implied a better resolution but a longer testing time. In this paper, a convenient method to increase both overall system resolution and inspection speed of eddy current roll inspection is suggested by using a devised array sensor structure.

Seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) column-bent piers under bidirectional seismic loadings was experimentally investigated. Six column bent-piers were constructed with two circular supporting columns which were made in 400mm diameter and 2,000mm height. Test parameters are different transverse reinforcement and loading pattern. These piers were tested under lateral load reversals with the axial load of $0.1f_{ck}A_g$. Three specimens were subjected to bidirectional lateral load cycles which consisted of two main longitudinal loads and two sub transverse loads in one load cycle. Other three specimens were loaded in the opposite way. Test results indicated that lateral strength and ductility of the latter three specimens were generally bigger than those of the former three specimens. Plastic hinges were formed with the spall of cover concrete and the fracture of the longitudinal reinforcing steels in the bottom plastic hinge of two supporting columns for the former three specimens. Similar behavior was observed in the top and bottom parts of two supporting columns for the latter three specimens.
