  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the power spectrum of a three-phase and a two-phase RCD (Random Pulse Centered Displacement) PWM scheme. The two-phase or three-phase pulses of RCD-PWM scheme are mutually center-aligned as in SVM(Space Vector Modulation), but the common pulse center is displaced randomly from the middle of the period. To verify the validity of the proposed two-phase RCD-PWM scheme, the power spectra of the output voltage, the d.c link current in the inverter drives and the radiated acoustic noise are experimentally investigated. And, the performance of the proposed two-phase RCD-PWM scheme was compared and discussed with the conventional three-phase RCD-PWM scheme.

  • Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) at millimeter wavelengths results in the highest angular resolutions achieved in astronomy and has a unique access to emission regions that are inaccessible with any other approach or at longer wavelengths. The simultaneous multi-frequency VLBI system in the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) is considered one of the most effective systems for compensating the atmospheric phase fluctuations, which is particularly bothersome at mm-VLBI. We have been demonstrating its performance and uniqueness at mm-VLBI observations. As a results, international VLBI partners from Japan, China, Australia and EU have expressed their interest on the KVN style simultaneous multi-frequency system. In this talk, we will report the activities for extending the simultaneous multi-frequency system to global VLBI network and introduce its science driver, measuring AGN core-shift effects.

  • To get instantaneous reference data in a single power system with vector space phasors, the instantaneous load current is adopted as a phase and another new signal, which is delayed through filtering by the phase-delay property of a low-pass filter, is used as the secondary phase. Because the two-phases have a different phase, the instantaneous value of the harmonic current can be obtained without a time-delay in calculation. The reference voltage is created by multiplying the coefficient k by the compensation current using the rotating reference frame synchronized with the source-frequency. To verify the validity of the proposed control method, experiments are carried out on a prototype of the single-phase hybrid active power filter system.

  • This paper concerns a three-phase self-excited induction generator used for autonomous power generation. It presents a robust control strategy which makes it possible to maintain the frequency quasi constant during the voltage regulation without any control loop on this variable. This strategy, which also prevents the machine disengagement, uses as power converter a simple dimmer. The obtained theoretical and/or numerical results are validated on a laboratory test bench that allows the analysis of this control law effectiveness.

  • Experimental studies have been conducted to verify that the positive coupling between pressure oscillation (p') and combustion oscillation (q') of high frequency range is a prerequisite for the initiation of low frequency instability in hybrid rocket combustion. The post-chamber length and combustion equivalence ratio were selected as critical parameters to control the phase difference between p' and q', and p' amplitude in relation to the suppression of LFI. In the results, even if the post-chamber length increases, the phase difference between p' and q' maintains below pi/2, which is a necessary condition for the LFI development, but the amplification of RI (Rayleigh index) was substantially decreased leading to a stable combustion. In addition, results confirmed that combustion stability is achieved by changing the momentary equivalence ratio and/or by suppressing the positive coupling status of p' and q'. Thus, the periodic amplification of RI was identified as the middle path of the mechanism of occurrence of LFI.

  • Modern radar system requires high spectral purity and low phase noise characteristics for very low RCS target detection and high resolution SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) image. This paper presents a new X-band high stable frequency synthesizer for high performance radar system, which combines DAS (Direct Analog Synthesizer) and DDS (Direct Digital Synthesizer) techniques, in order to cope with very low phase noise and high frequency agility requirements. This synthesizer offers more than 10% operating bandwidth in X-band frequency and fast agile time lower than 1 usec. Also, the phase noise at 10kHz offset is lower than -136dBc/Hz, which shows an improvement of more than 10dB compared to the current state of art frequency synthesizer. This architecture can be applied to L-band and C-band application as well. This frequency synthesizer is able to used in modern AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar system and high resolution SAR application.

  • In this paper, a new two-phase space vector RPWM(Random PWM) is proposed. In the proposed RPWM, each of two-phase PWM pulses is located randomly in each switching interval. Based on the space vector modulation technique, the duty ratio of the pulses is calculated. Along with the randomization of the PWM pulses, we can obtain the effects of spread spectra of inverter output voltage, d.c link current and audible switching acoustic noise as in the case of randomly changed switching frequency. To verily the validity of the proposed two-phase RPWM scheme, the experiment based on the Cl67 micro-controller was executed. The performance of the proposed scheme was compared with traditional PWM schemes experimentally.

  • A 90-deg phase shifter using corrugated square waveguide structure for 86 GHz band VLBI(Very Long Baseline Interferometry) dual-circular polarization observation has been developed. The 90-deg phase shifter was designed to have two corrugated walls inside the square waveguide so that the vertically and horizontally polarized waves at the output port have phase differences of $90{\pm}3.3$ deg across 85~115 GHz. Measurements show that the return and insertion losses for the both polarizations are better than 17 dB and 0.25 dB, respectively. The axial ratio is estimated to be less than 0.6 dB within the required frequency band.

  • We report an example of Pi2 pulsation exhibiting different frequency between dawn and dusk. This Pi2 pulsation occurred around 1932 UT on February 14, 2008, and was observed at low-latitude Bohyun (BOH, L = 1.35, MLT = 3.8) and Hermanus (HER, L = 1.83, MLT = 20.1) stations. The pulsation starts simultaneously at both stations but the frequency is higher at BOH than at HER. At the time of the Pi2, THEMIS-A (THA) and THEMIS-D (THD) were on dawn (L = 2.9, MLT = 5.3) and dusk (L = 2.8, MLT = 18), respectively, in the inner magnetosphere. We find a nearly identical waveform and period between THA ${\delta}Bz$ and BOH ${\delta}H$ and between THD ${\delta}Bz$ and HER ${\delta}H$ with a near $0^{\circ}$ phase delay. This observation implies that Pi2-associated fastmode wave in the inner magnetosphere is not excited globally as a single frequency at all longitudes. We suggest that the different frequency between dawn and dusk is due to dawn-dusk asymmetry of the plasmasphere.
