ANALYSIS OF RESEARCH PROJECTS IN ASTRONOMY AND SPACE SCIENCE IN THE YEAR DURING 2004~05 (천문우주 분야의 2004~05년도 과제 현황분석)

  • Many departments in the governmental organization including Ministry of Science & Technology (MOST) allocate some of their budget into research and development in astronomy and space science. We identify the research projects related to astronomy and space science that were funded by the government during fiscal years 2004-2005. Then the distribution of budgets of those projects is analyzed according to several classification schemes and characteristics in order to find out the status and trends of the investment in this field. Five departments had conducted more than 190 projects related to astronomy and space science, which accounted for 7.3% of the government R&D budget in space and aeronautics area. As for most fields of basic science, MOST and Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development invested the most of budget in astronomy related projects. We briefly discuss the implications of this study.

Parking Space Detection based on Camera and LIDAR Sensor Fusion (카메라와 라이다 센서 융합에 기반한 개선된 주차 공간 검출 시스템)

  • This paper proposes a parking space detection method for autonomous parking by using the Around View Monitor (AVM) image and Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) sensor fusion. This method consists of removing obstacles except for the parking line, detecting the parking line, and template matching method to detect the parking space location information in the parking lot. In order to remove the obstacles, we correct and converge LIDAR information considering the distortion phenomenon in AVM image. Based on the assumption that the obstacles are removed, the line filter that reflects the thickness of the parking line and the improved radon transformation are applied to detect the parking line clearly. The parking space location information is detected by applying template matching with the modified parking space template and the detected parking lines are used to return location information of parking space. Finally, we propose a novel parking space detection system that returns relative distance and relative angle from the current vehicle to the parking space.

A new derivation method of the generalized Jacobian matrix of a space robot and its application to a multi-robot system

  • This paper deals with a new method to derive the Generalized Jacobian Matrix of a space robot. In a conventional method to derive the Generalized Jacobian Matrix, generalized coordinates select Joint angles and a space robot body's position and attitude angle. But, in this paper, we select position and attitude angle of the end-effector or the handled floating object as generalized coordinates. Then, we can derive the Generalized Jacobian Matrix of the system which consists of several space robots and a handled floating object. Moreover control methods operated by only one space robot can be easily extended to the cases of cooperation task by several space robots. Computer simulations show that the Generalized Jacobian Matrix derived here is effective.

  • The navigation problem of robot is one of the main themes to deal with conficts or interferences between obstacles and the robot itself In this case, while the robot avoids obstacles on the space, the passage route should be determined efficiently. In order to solve problems above, we have come up with the distance field space medel (DFM) and then, under known environment, we have presented the distance field A algorithm for passage route path search. In this research, the method of performing the 3-dimensional passage route path search of robot under unknown environment is proposed. It is shown that the authors can build the distance search model the does not need space division by taking into account of sensor information to a distance field space model, and constructing this information as virtual obstacle information.

  • In this talk, we present a good example of extreme solar and geomagnetic activities from October to November, 2003. These activities are characterized by very large sunspot groups, X-class solar flares, strong particle events, and huge geomagnetic storms. We discuss ground-based and space-based data in terms of space weather scales. We applied the CME propagation models to these events in order to predict the arrivals of heliospheric disturbances.   • 과학기술의 발전으로 세계 각국의 경쟁은 지상을 넘어 우주로 나아가고 있다. 현재 미국을 비롯한 세계 우주기술 선진국들은 달 및 행성탐사 우주선 개발과 같은 유인 우주기술 개발에 박차를 가하고 있다. 따라서 미국, 러시아, 유럽연합(독일, 프랑스 등 11개국), 캐나다, 일본을 중심으로 운영되고 있는 우주정거장은 유인 우주행성탐사 시 생명체 유지에 필요한 시스템 개발과 검증을 위한 기초/응용과학 실험실로 활용되고 있다. 특히 우주환경에서 화재의 발생과 감지/소화의 메카니즘을 이해하고자 다양한 연소실험이 이루어지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 가장 기본적인 우주환경인 미세중력환경에서의 화염의 점화 및 형상특성을 고찰해보고 우주환경 화재안전에 관한 일반적인 내용을 기술하였다.

Analysis of Dark Data of the PICNIC IR Arrays in the CIBER

  • We have measured and analyzed the dark data of two PICNIC IR arrays (P574 and P560) obtained through the Cosmic Infrared Background ExpeRiment (CIBER). First, we identified three types of bad pixels: the cold, the hot, and the transient, which are figured in total as 0.06% for P574 and 0.19% for P560. Then, after the bad pixels were masked, we determined the dark noise to be 20.5 ${\pm}$ 0.05 $e^-$ and 16.1 ${\pm}$ 0.05 $e^-$, and the dark current to be 0.6 ${\pm}$ 0.05 $e^-$/sec and 0.7 ${\pm}$ 0.05 $e^-$/sec for P574 and P560, respectively. Finally, we discussed glitches and readout modes for a future mission.

  • 차세대 중력파 검출기들이 1.5 ㎛ 이상의 장파장에서의 양자광원을 필요로 함에 따라, 이에 대한 기술 개발의 중요성이 대두되고 있다. 차세대 검출기들은 기존의 검출기에 사용되는 test mass를 fused silica에서 silicon으로 변경하면서 열팽창 현상으로 인해 생기는 정밀도의 한계를 뛰어넘으려한다. 하지만 1064 nm 파장의 경우 silicon에서 흡수율이 매우 높으므로 사용할 수 없기에, 흡수율이 상대적으로 낮은 1.5 ㎛ 이상의 영역의 양자광원이 필요하다. 본 발표에서는 1550 nm 파장에서 압축광 개발에 필요한 기술들을 소개하고, 현재까지 진행된 실험 및 실험결과 들을 보고하고자 한다. 압축광의 pump빔을 만드는 SHG, 압축광이 생성되는 OPO, 생성된 압축광의 quadrature를 측정하기 위한 호모다인 측정기, 빛의 분광 잡음을 줄이고, 원하는 spatial mode로 여과시켜주는 mode cleaning cavity에 대한 내용을 설명한다.

Current Status of Nanotechnology Development for Space Exploration (우주탐사용 나노기술 개발 동향)

  • Nanotechnology(NT) refers to a field of advanced micro-technology covering the creation and manufacturing of materials on the atomic and molecular scale and requires interdisciplinary study with various fields including materials science, physics, chemistry, electronics and others. Whileas nanotechnology is a kind of micro and small scaled science, space technology(ST) is one of the larger and system technologies utilizing broad fields of mechanical, materials, electronics and communication technologies. It is necessary to select and concentrate the functional items of nanotechnology for efficient application to be utilized in space technology, due to the cross-sectional characteristics of nanotechnology within nanomaterials, nanoelectronics, and nanomanufacturing. This paper provides the current state of art of nanotechnology in space technology by evaluating NASA's activities and the 9th frame of the project ANTARES(Analysis of Nanotechnology Applications in Space Developments and Systems) with the support of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Space Flight Management, Division Technology for Space Systems and Robotics. It has shown that it is necessary to apply nanotechnology to space technology in order to achieve international competitiveness, for the nanotechnology can bring the previously impossible things to reality. Since KARI plans to send an unmanned probe to the moon's orbit and land a probe on the moon's surface in 2025, it is urgently needed to incorporate nanotechnology to national space development plan.
