Adaptive Optics (AO) was first studied in the field of astronomy, and its applications have been extended to the field of laser, microscopy, bio, medical, and free space laser communication. AO modelling and simulation are required throughout the system development process. It is necessary not only for proper design but also for performance verification after the final system is built. In KASI, we are trying to develop the AO Python Package for AO modelling and simulation. It includes modelling classes of atmosphere, telescope, Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor, deformable mirror, which are the components for an AO system. It also includes the ability to simulate the entire AO system over time. It is being developed in the Super Eye Bridge project to develop a segmented mirror, an adaptive optics, and an emersion grating spectrograph, which are future telescope technologies. And it is planned to be used as a performance analysis system for several telescope projects in Korea.
The KASINICS (KASI Near Infrared Camera System) is a ground-based Near-Infrared (NIR) imaging instrument developed by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). In this paper, we report the test results of the KASINICS camera optics system which is comprised of a 1-1 Offner relay. We measure that the surface RMS fluctuations of the Offner mirrors are at the level of $10^{-1}-10^{-2}$ of the target wavelengths, showing that the mirrors are sufficiently smooth for NIR observations. The alignment of the Offner optics system has been checked too. Our ray-tracing simulations find that the image quality should not degrade more than the pixel size of the KASINICS ($40{\mu}m$), if a de-centering or a tilt of the Offner mirrors are within 5mm, or $2.5^{\circ}$. Our measurement shows that the de-centering or the tilt of the Offner mirrors are less than 1 mm or $0.5^{\circ}$, assuring that the KASINICS image quality are not affected by the alignment errors. We have also measured that the optics resolution is $20{\mu}m$ and it does not degrade more than 10% over the detector surface area of 14.3 mm ${/times}$ 14.3mm. Overall, we conclude that the KASINICS optics system satisfies the design requirements for NIR imaging observations.
For research and development of Silicon Carbide (SiC) mirrors, the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) and National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) have agreed to cooperate and share on polishing and measuring facilities, experience and human resources for two years (2014-2015). The main goals of the SiC mirror polishing are to achieve optical surface figures of less than 20 nm rms and optical surface roughness of less than 2 nm rms. In addition, Green Optics Co., Ltd (GO) has been interested in the SiC polishing and joined the partnership with KASI. KASI will be involved in the development of the SiC polishing and the optical surface measurement using three different kinds of SiC materials and manufacturing processes (POCO$^{TM}$, CoorsTek$^{TM}$ and SSG$^{TM}$ corporations) provided by NOAO. GO will polish the SiC substrate within requirements. Additionally, the requirements of the optical surface imperfections are given as: less than 40 um scratch and 500 um dig. In this paper, we introduce the international collaboration and interim results for SiC mirror polishing and development.
In this study a new design concept of the Fabry-Perot filter, constructed with an anisotropic space layer and a couple of isotropic mirrors, was proposed based on the Maxwell equations and the characteristic matrix method. The single- and double-cavity Fabry-Perot filters were designed, and their optical properties were investigated with a developed software package. In addition, the dependence of the transmittance and phase shift for two orthogonal polarization states on the column angle of the anisotropic space layer and the incidence angle were discussed. We demonstrated that the polarization state of electromagnetic waves and phase shifts can be modulated by exploiting an anisotropic space layer in a polarization F-P filter. Birefringence of the anisotropic space layer provided a sophisticated phase modulation with varied incidence angles over a broad range, resulting in a wide-angle phase shift. This new concept would be useful for designing optical components with isotropic and anisotropic materials.
In this paper, we propose a new method to predict a mirror's surface deformation due to the stress of moisture release by a coating in the environment of outer space. We measured the surface deformation of circular samples 50 mm in diameter and 1.03 mm thick, using an interferometer. The results were analyzed using Zernike fringe polynomials. The coating stress caused by moisture release was calculated to be 152.7 MPa. This value was applied to an analytic model of a 1.25 mm thickness sample mirror, confirming that the change of surface deformation could be predicted within the standard deviation of the measurement result ($78.9{\pm}5.9nm$). Using this methodology, we predicted the surface deformation of 600 mm hyperbolic mirror for the Compact Advanced Satellite, which will be launched in 2019. The result is only $2.005{\mu}m$ of focal shift, leading to 2.3% degradation of modulation transfer function (MTF) at the Nyquist frequency, which satisfies the requirement.

Free-space optical interconnection networks can be classified into two types, space variant and space invariant, according to the degree of space variance. In terms of physical implementations, the degree of space variance can be interpreted as the degree of sharing beam steering optics among the nodes of a given network. This implies that all nodes in a totally space-invariant network can share a single beam steering optics to realize the given network topology, whereas, in a totally space variant network, each node requires a distinct beam steering optics. However, space invariant networks require mechanisms for distinguishing the origins of incoming signals detected at the node since several signals may arrive at the same time if the node degree of the network is greater than one. This paper presents a signal source encoding scheme for distinguishing incoming signals efficiently, in terms of the number of detectors at each node or the number of unique wavelengths. The proposed scheme is solved by developing a new parallel genetic algorithm called distributed asynchronous genetic algorithm (DAGA). Using the DAGA, we solved signal distinction schemes for various network sizes of several topologies such as hypercube, the mesh, and the de Brujin.
We conducted efficiency calculation in a prototype receiver optics for ASTE 10 meter telescope using the measured beam patterns of the band7+8 feed horn. Beam measurements results are summarized and estimated aperture efficiencies over band7+8 frequency range are presented.
In this report, we present in-orbit radiometric performance prediction for the Amon-Ra (Albedo Monitor and Radiometer) energy channel instrument. The Integrated Ray Tracing (IRT) computational technique uses the ray sets arriving at the Amon-Ra instrument aperture orbiting around the L1 halo orbit. Using this, the variation of flux arriving at the energy channel detector was obtained when the Amon-Ra instrument including the energy channel design observes the Sun and Earth alternately. The flux detectability was verified at the energy channel detector (LME-500-A, InfraTecTM). The detector time response and RMS signal voltage were then derived from the simulated flux variation results. The computation results demonstrate that the designed energy channel optical system satisfies the in-orbit detectability requirement. The technical details of energy channel instrument design, IRT model construction, radiative transfer simulation and output signal computation results are presented together with future development plan.

We present a new design approach and an example design for an image-space telecentric two-mirror system that has a fast f-number and a wide-field line image. The initial design of the telecentric mirror system is a conventional axially symmetric system, consisting of a flat primary mirror with fourth-order aspheric deformation and an oblate ellipsoidal secondary mirror to correct spherical aberration, coma, and field curvature. Even though in the optimized design the primary mirror is tilted, to avoid ray obstruction by the secondary mirror, the image-space telecentric two-mirror system shows quite good imaging performance, for a line imager.
