The development of group-specific tissue probability maps (TPM) provides a priori knowledge for better result of cerebral tissue classification with regard to the inter-ethnic differences of inter-subject variability. We present sequential procedures of group-specific TPM and evaluate the age effects in the structural differences of TPM. We investigated 100 healthy volunteers with high resolution MRI scalming. The subjects were classified into young (60, 25.92+4.58) and old groups (40, 58.83${\pm}$8.10) according to the age. To avoid any bias from random selected single subject and improve registration robustness, average atlas as target for TPM was constructed from skull-stripped whole data using linear and nonlinear registration of AIR. Each subject was segmented into binary images of gray matter, white matter, and cerebrospinal fluid using fuzzy clustering and normalized into the space of average atlas. The probability images were the means of these binary images, and contained values in the range of zero to one. A TPM of a given tissue is a spatial probability distribution representing a certain subject population. In the spatial distribution of tissue probability according to the threshold of probability, the old group exhibited enlarged ventricles and overall GM atrophy as age-specific changes, compared to the young group. Our results are generally consistent with the few published studies on age differences in the brain morphology. The more similar the morphology of the subject is to the average of the population represented by the TPM, the better the entire classification procedure should work. Therefore, we suggest that group-specific TPM should be used as a priori information for the cerebral tissue classification.
Objectives : The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate the effect of Geupoongjibo-dan Extracts on Reversible Forebrain Ischemia in Mongolian Gerbils. Methods : The change rate of water content in cerebral tissues, the numercal change of the CA1 pyramidal neuron in the hippocampus, the change of delayed neuronal death(necrosis apoptosis) through light microscopy, the reactivity change of glycoprotein in neuronal membrane and the ultrastructural change of pyramidal neuron through electron microscopy caused by dalayed neuronal death were investigated. Results : 1. The change rate of water content in the normal group showed 78.90% on the third day, and 79.12% on the seventh day after an attack of ischemia. The rate in the control group showed 82.25% and 85.13%, respectively. The rate in the sample group showed a significant decrease: 81.72% and 83.66%. 2. Light microscopy revealed that the cells, continuous and systematic forms in the pyramidal cells of hippocampus, changed into discontinuous and unsystematic forms in the normal group when compared with the control group. The cells were less damaged in the sample group. 3. The mean of the numerical change of the CA1 pyramidal neurons in the hippocampus was 104 in the normal group. The mean of the control group was decreased to 27. The mean of the sample group was 44. 4. TUNEL staining examination reveals that the whole part of the hippocampus of the normal group had negative reactivity. As far as CA1 pyramidal neurons in the hippocampus, the control group had positive reactivity. The sample group was more positive than the control group. 5. Electron microscopy reveals that the ischemic injury of the control group had both necrotic and apoptotic morphology. The sample group was less necrotic, and more apoptotic morphology than the control group. 6. Lectin histochemisrical examination reveals that the normal group had positive reactivity to PNA and SBA in interneuron, and weak positive reactivity to WGA Con A LCA in intercelluar space. The reactivity to PNA and WGA decreased in the control group. The reactivity to PNA and WGA tended to increase in the sample group. Conclusions : The data shows that the effect of Geupoongjibo-dan Extracts on Reversible Forebrain Ischemia in MG is a significant result.
Green $BaSi_2O_2N_2:0.02Eu^{2+}$ phosphor is synthesized through a two-step solid state reaction method. The first firing is for crystallization, and the second firing is for reduction of $Eu^{3+}$ into $Eu^{2+}$ and growth of crystal grains. By thermal analysis, the three-time endothermic reaction is confirmed: pyrolysis reaction of $BaCO_3$ at $900^{\circ}C$ and phase transitions at $1,300^{\circ}C$ and $1,400^{\circ}C$. By structural analysis, it is confirmed that single phase [$BaSi_2O_2N_2$] is obtained with Cmcm space group of orthorhombic structure. After the first firing the morphology is rod-like type and, after the second firing, the morphology becomes round. Our phosphor shows a green emission with a peak position of 495 nm and a peak width of 32 nm due to the $4f^65d^1{\rightarrow}4f^7$ transition of $Eu^{2+}$ ion. An LED package (chip size $5.6{\times}3.0mm$) is fabricated with a mixture of our green $BaSi_2O_2N_2$, and yellow $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$ and red $Sr_2Si_5N_8$ phosphors. The color rendering index (90) is higher than that of the mixture without our green phosphor (82), which indicates that this is an excellent green candidate for white LEDs with a deluxe color rendering index.
Purpose: Exact knowledge of the location and dimension of the pulp chamber help to maintain the pulp healthy during operative procedure and also reduces the risk of perforation of pulp chamber during root canal treatment. This in-vivo study was carried out to measure critical morphology of pulp chamber of mandibular molar using intra-oral periapical radiograph. Materials and Methods: Mandibular molar teeth of 56 patients were evaluated. The mandibular molar teeth whose pulp chamber was not violated by caries, restoration, fracture crown and those having closed apex were included in the study. The intraoral periapical radiographs were taken with paralleling angle technique using radio-opaque grid with 1 mm space. This grid was placed directly on the film. Results: In 94% of the mandibular first molars specimens the pulp chamber ceiling was at the level of the cemento-enamel junction. The measurements showing the lowest percentage variance were buccal cusp to furcation (approximately 11%) and buccal cusp to pulp chamber ceiling (approximately 15%). The distance from the cusp tip to pulp chamber ceiling height was approximately 6.0 mm, the distance from the pulpal floor to the furcation was approximately 3.0 mm, and the average height of a pulp chamber was 1.5 to 2.0 mm. Conclusion: The exact knowledge of distances of pulp chamber from various anatomical landmarks helps in proper assessment of root canals and ultimately avoids the failure of root canal treatment.
Arthrosis of the temporomandibular joint is defined as a disease of a joint with chief complaint of pain, clicking, limited jaw movements. Generally, most patients with the temporomandibular arthrosis can be treated conservatively with muscle relaxation therapy combined with mandibular repositioning prostheses, followed by occlusal equilibration, restorative dentistry and/or orthodontics, and many other forms of treatment. In case prior nonsurgical treatment proved to be ineffective or the disease is chronic and severe, surgical operation is recommended. For patients with arthrosis of the temporomandibular joint, only discectomy as therapeutic method of the surgical treatment should not be applied and the removed articular disc of the temporomandibular joint should be replaced. Allograft such as Proplast-Teflon, Silastic, etc have been used as replacements of removed articular disc. However, these allograft materials have caused complications such as inflammatory changes, foreign body reactions. As a result, a replacement material which is autogenous, space occupying, easy to harvest and less inflammatory change has been developed. Auricular cartilage with perichondrium satisfies many of these requirements. The apparent advantages of autogenous auricular cartilage as an interpositional graft after a discectomy are as follows, (1) the form of the external ear corresponds to joint morphology, (2) a graft of adequate size can be harvested, (3) the form of the external ear remains unchanged after surgery, (4) the graft can be obtained adjacent to the surgical site, (5) biologically acceptable material is used, (6) the additional expense of allogenic graft is avoided. Because we considered autogenous auricular cartilage as a good replacement material, removed articular disc has been replaced with fresh autogenous auricular cartilage in the case of three patients. The result of the treatment is favorable, and the cases being presented here.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the radiographic features associated with impacted premaxillary supernumerary teeth, to determine the relationship between their characteristics and their effects on permanent incisors, and to investigate the types of orthodontic treatment that patients received after the extraction of impacted supernumerary teeth. Materials and Methods: The clinical records and radiographs of 193 patients whose impacted premaxillary supernumerary teeth were removed were retrospectively reviewed, and 241 impacted supernumerary teeth were examined. Cone-beam computed tomographic images and panoramic radiographs were examined to determine the number, location, sagittal position, orientation, and morphology of the supernumerary teeth. Their effects on permanent incisors and the orthodontic treatment received by patients after the extraction of the supernumeraries were also investigated. Results: Supernumerary teeth were most frequently observed in the central incisor region, in the palatal position, in the inverted orientation, and were most commonly conical in shape. The most common complication was median diastema, followed by displacement and delayed eruption of the adjacent incisors. Ten (71.4%) of the 14 odontomas showed delayed eruption of the adjacent incisors. Displacement of the incisors was more frequently observed in association with supernumerary teeth with tuberculate or supplemental shapes. Orthodontic traction was most frequently performed after the removal of odontomas. In 32 cases (13.3%), permanent incisors erupted after the orthodontic creation of sufficient space. Conclusion: Median diastema was most common complication. The delayed eruption of incisors was common in supernumerary teeth with a vertical orientation and an odontoma shape.

A highly porous Biphasic Calcium Phosphate (BCP) scaffold was fabricated by the sponge replica method with a microwave sintering technique. The BCP scaffold had interconnected pores ranging from $80\;{\mu}m$ to $1000\;{\mu}m$, which were similar to natural cancellous bone. To enhance the mechanical properties of the porous scaffold, infiltration of polycaprolactone (PCL) was employed. The microstructure of the BCP scaffold was optimized using various volume percentages of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) for the infiltration process. PCL successfully infiltrated into the hollow space of the strut formed after the removal of the polymer sponge throughout the degassing and high pressure steps. The microstructure and material properties of the BCP scaffold (i.e., pore size, morphology of infiltrated and coated PCL, compressive strength, and porosity) were evaluated. When a 30 vol% of PMMA was used, the PCL-BCP scaffold showed the highest compressive strength. The compressive strength values of the BCP and PCL-BCP scaffolds were approximately 1.3 and 2MPa, respectively. After the PCL infiltration process, the porosity of the PCL-BCP scaffold decreased slightly to 86%, whereas that of the BCP scaffold was 86%. The number of pores in the $10\;{\mu}m$ to $20\;{\mu}m$ rage, which represent the pore channel inside of the strut, significantly decreased. The in-vitro study confirmed that the PCL-infiltrated BCP scaffold showed comparable cell viability without any cytotoxic behavior.
The purpose of this study is to investigate degree of the concept formation on cell in elementary school teachers and to clarify the patterns of their misconceptions. Data were collected by interview with 120 elementary school teachers, ranged from twenties to fifties in age, working in Taegu city. The instrument was developed by researchers and was categorized into four: cell as the basic units of life, morphology of cell, function of cell, growth of individual from the viewpoint of cell. The results are as follows: First, about 80% of teachers had two perspective outcome of cell: Cells are the basic units of life on earth. But the potato and meat, which we used to eat as food, are not constructed of cells but aggregated of nutrients. Second, most of elementary school teachers recognized that shapes of the cell in organisms were diverse, but some of them only could present several kinds of shape on cell. The 35% of teachers had misconception that shape of cell is all the same in a individual. It shows that this result is caused by lack of opportunity to observe the various kinds of cells. Third, most teachers understood tell can be seen only through a microscope. Yet in comparison with relative size, it was revealed that misconception of cell size was induced by the term of 'basic unit'. In addition, they thought that large organisms are built from large cells, and small organisms from small cells. Fourth, Elementary school teachers used to confuse the terms between chloroplast and chlorophyll, and believed that the genetic material was contained only in the reproductive cells and seeds. It was also revealed that they thought the nutrients such as starch and fat are located at intercellular space. Fifth, the 60% of teachers conceived correctly that growth of individual depends on mitosis and increase in cell number. The rest of them, however, misunderstood that it is due to the increase of tell volume.

An additional root of the primary maxillary second molar is rarely observed. Two cases are presented herein, and we discuss a possible association between additional root of the primary maxillary second molar and displacement and rotation of the permanent successor. Investigation of crown morphology enables the detection of a potential additional root of the primary maxillary second molar, and eruption of the permanent successor needs to be examined carefully if an additional root is present. Early extraction of primary molar and space maintenance can be used as a conservative treatment if the premolar germ shows an abnormal eruption pattern.

In this study, we observed the effects of repeated perms on the morphology of virgin hair of a healthy thirteen year-old girl with scanning electron microscopy. After the first treatment, the outer parts of cuticle cell were broken unevenly and roughly. Cuticle cells were lifted upward making a space. After the third treatment, cuticle cells were lifted off one another and the folded scales showed irregular surface areas. Broken pieces of cells were stuck on the surface and an empty hole was present in the endocuticle of the cytoplasm. We observed that cortex separated from cuticle layer more easilywith repeated treatments.
