Height Transition Trajectory Design for Considering Engine Performance (엔진성능을 고려한 무인비행체의 고도전이 궤적 설계)

  • In mission planning of UAV applications, especially for the missions requiring height transitions, it is required to generate reference flight trajectories considering the performances of the engine installed in the UAV. Even though the vertical line following guidance based height transition trajectory generation method has been developed to build reference height transition trajectories easily, it is not adequate for considering engine performances effectively since many engine characteristics and performances have conventionally been described in the V-H(speed-height) plane which is not the very space where the UAVs are actually flying. In this paper, we derive the trajectories in V-H plane for the vertical line following flights. And based on the results, a new algorithm to design the reference height transition trajectories for UAV applicaions. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is very effective and easily applicable.

A Study on the interior environment of the children's book section in grand bookstores (대형서점의 아동서적 실내 환경에 관한 연구 - 서울지역 대형서점을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide basic guidelines for qualitatively advanced children facilities and spaces in grand bookstores. The main concept is considered with a situation that grand bookstores of large corporations are increasing in quantity, but their social missions for the user are often being connived. The study is peformed by research of current six domestic grand bookstores, two branches of each three large corporations, larger than 2,500py in Seoul, and the research is applied to Murtha's User Benefit Criteria as a basic format. As a result of the research, some problems to be improved are detected in ways of behavioral facilitation, physiological maintenance, perceptual maintenance, and social facilitation, therefore findings in survey turned out to be parents' dissatisfaction in many aspects. Finally, with this result, it is desirable for interior designers to reflect the indicated insufficient elements to their following children's bookstore space design for the user, children and their parents.

  • This study involves a Common Cause Failure (CCF) problem on the ultra-high reliability required system development such as war game operations, nuclear power control, air traffic control, space shuttle missions, and large scale network communication system. The system situation problems are defined according to CCF, reliability and system fault identifications for the development cast verifications in the multi-version redundant software system. Then, CCF analysis of redundant system, system principles and statistical dependence are also described. This validation oh the CCF in the human software interaction system will notify software engineers to conceive what really is CCF contribution factor, not only the internal but the external ones.

  • The monopropellant hydrazine thrusters are widely used for the satellite on-board propulsion system fulfilling various missions in space. They have outstanding features caused by the nearly unlimited restart capability and the very high credibility. The sole monopropellant thruster used at precent in nation is MRE-1 that is a standard component of NASA. It can produce 4.45 N of nominal thrust. Due to the glowing complexity with a satellite mission, the needs for thrusters of the diverse performance are being increased. The numerical simulation could give useful information to develop a new type thruster instead of the experiments performed previously. Therefore it is critical to make a reliable computer code to prepare design change of a thruster. In this paper, the performance analysis and validation of the satellite monopropellant hydrazine thruster currently used is accomplished as the preliminary study to serve valuable data for future design change.

  • This paper considers the simultaneously firing model for the artillery operations. The objective of this paper is to find the optimal fire sequence minimizing the final completion time of the firing missions of multiple artillery units for multiple targets. In the problem analysis, we derive several solution properties to reduce the solution space. Moreover, two lower bounds of objective are derived and tested along with the derived properties within a branch-and-bound scheme. Two efficient heuristic algorithms are also developed. The overall performances of the proposed branch-and-bound and heuristic algorithms are evaluated through various numerical experiments.

Comparison of the Monitored Forests Results from EO-1 Hyperion , ALI and Landsat 7 ETM+

  • The EO-1 spacecraft, launched November 21, 2000 into a sun synchronous orbit behind Landsat 7, hosts advanced technology demonstration instruments, whose capabilities are currently being assessed by the user community for future missions. A significant part of the EO-1 program is to perform data comparisons between Hyperion, ALI and Landsat 7 ETM+. In this paper, a comparison of forest classification results from Hyperion, ALI, and the ETM+ of Landsat-7 are provided for Wangqing Forest Bureau, Jilin Province, Northeast China. The data have been radiometrically corrected and geometrically resampled. Feature selection and statistical transforms are used to reduce the Hyperion feature space from 86 channels to 14 features. Classes chosen for discrimination included Larch, Spruce, Oak, Birch, Popular and Mixed forest and other landuses. Classification accuracies have been obtained for each sensor. Comparison of the classification results shows : Hyperion classification results were the best, ALI's were much better than ETM+.

Attitude estimation: with or without spacecraft dynamics?

  • Kalman filter based spacecraft attitude estimation has been used in many space missions and has been widely discussed in literature. While some models in spacecraft attitude estimation include spacecraft dynamics, most do not. To our best knowledge, there is no comparison on which model is a better choice. In this paper, we discuss the reasons why spacecraft dynamics should be considered in the Kalman filter based spacecraft attitude estimation problem. We also propose a reduced quaternion spacecraft dynamics model which admits additive noise. Geometry of the reduced quaternion model and the additive noise are discussed. This treatment is easier in computation than the one with full quaternion. Simulations are conducted to verify our claims.

  • The Solar Space Environment Division of the Korean Society of Space Science (KSSS) has recently conducted a survey among the domestic researchers affiliated with academia, national research institutes, and for-profit institutes of how the data and models in their professional research field are produced, maintained, and utilized. The primary purpose of this survey is to increase the awareness and utilization of the space environment data and models as well as to promote constructive collaborations among the domestic and international researchers. The models and data surveyed are categorized into three sub-fields: the solar and interplanetary space, the (terrestrial) magnetosphere, and the ionosphere and upper atmosphere. The present paper reports the survey results in the "Magnetosphere" category. The survey shows that the domestically produced data in this category are far less than the data produced in other categories. This can be understood in part as follows: Magnetospheric research relies heavily on the in-situ observations but the development and operation of space-hardened satellites require a significant investment. Nevertheless, the recent publications show an increasing trend of research using the data from the ground stations and the recently launched domestic space missions. In the modeling front, there are first-principles physics models covering from the magnetospheric scale to the sub-ion scale and the models geared towards the space weather prediction. Polybenzimidazole (PBI) Coated CFRP Composite as a Front Bumper Shield for Hypervelocity Impact Resistance in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Environment

  • An object in the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is affected by many environmental conditions unlike earth's surface such as, Atomic oxygen (AO), Ultraviolet Radiation (UV), thermal cycling, High Vacuum and Micrometeoroids and Orbital Debris (MMOD) impacts. The effect of all these parameters have to be carefully considered when designing a space structure, as it could be very critical for a space mission. Polybenzimidazole (PBI) is a high performance thermoplastic polymer that could be a suitable material for space missions because of its excellent resistance to these environmental factors. A thin coating of PBI polymer on the carbon epoxy composite laminate (referred as CFRP) was found to improve the energy absorption capability of the laminate in event of a hypervelocity impact. However, the overall efficiency of the shield also depends on other factors like placement and orientation of the laminates, standoff distances and the number of shielding layers. This paper studies the effectiveness of using a PBI coating on the front bumper in a multi-shock shield design for enhanced hypervelocity impact resistance. A thin PBI coating of 43 micron was observed to improve the shielding efficiency of the CFRP laminate by 22.06% when exposed to LEO environment conditions in a simulation chamber. To study the effectiveness of PBI coating in a hypervelocity impact situation, experiments were conducted on the CFRP and the PBI coated CFRP laminates with projectile velocities between 2.2 to 3.2 km/s. It was observed that the mass loss of the CFRP laminates decreased 7% when coated by a thin layer of PBI. However, the study of mass loss and damage area on a witness plate showed CFRP case to have better shielding efficiency than PBI coated CFRP laminate case. Therefore, it is recommended that PBI coating on the front bumper is not so effective in improving the overall hypervelocity impact resistance of the space structure.
