  • The next generation small satellite-1 (NEXTSat-1) program has been kicked off in 2012, and it will be launched in 2016 for the science missions and the verification of space core technologies. The payloads for these science missions are the Instrument for the Study of Space Storms (ISSS) and NIR Imaging Spectrometer for Star formation history (NISS). The ISSS and the NISS have been developed by Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and Korea Astronomy and Space science Institute (KASI) respectively. The ISSS detects plasma densities and particle fluxes of 10 MeV energy range near the Earth and the NISS uses spectrometer. In order to verify the spacecraft core technologies in the space, the total of 7 space core technologies (SCT) will be applied to the NEXTSat-1 for space verification and those are under development. Thus, the operation modes for the ISSS and the NISS for space science missions and 7 SCTs for technology missions are analyzed for the required operation time during the NEXTSat-1's mission life time of 2 years. In this paper, the operational concept of the NEXTSat-1's science missions as well as the verification of space core technologies are presented considering constraints of volume, mass, and power after launch.

  • Recently, the consuming efficiency of energy and natural resources has been a hot issue because of the continuous increasing of energy consumption and soaring of international oil prices. We tried to seek an action plan for the government's new paradigm 'Low-Carbon, Green Growth' by consuming energy efficiently and improving in energy management based on ubiquitous IT technologies. In this study, the library survey method is adopted for this study and IP-USN(internet protocol based ubiquitous sensor network) is considered as a core technology among various ubiquitous IT technologies. The purpose of this study is to deliver a method of energy management through integrating the context information gathered from sensors with digital space models and visualizing them together. The details are to survey the technologies of digital space modeling, USN based monitoring, building energy management and to integrate these technologies all together. This study will contribute to the enhancement of efficient building energy management by grasping the accurate situation of energy consuming in the building in realtime and minimizing unnecessary energy wastes.

  • IoT, Big-data, AI, and Cloud technologies, which are core technologies of the 4th Industrial Revolution, have recently been applied to various fields and are being used as core technologies for new growth engines. Accordingly, these core technologies are applied to the agricultural field without exception, contributing to solving the problem of labor shortage, reducing production costs, and reducing environmental burden through remote and automated production without time and space constraints. However, as these core technologies are utilized, security incidents are occurring in the agricultural field as well. Accordingly, this study divides smart farms into three stages(Basic, Middle, and High) and presents the characteristics and security threats of each stage. In particular, as the number of container-based services and research increases under cloud platforms, we would like to suggest countermeasures focusing on security threats.

  • STEP Cube Lab (Cube Laboratory for Space Technology Experimental Project) is a 1U standardized pico-class satellite. Its main mission objective is an on-orbit verification of five fundamental core space technologies. For assuring a successful missions of the STEP Cube Lab with five payloads, electrical power subsystem (EPS) shall sufficiently provide an electrical power to payloads and bus systems of the satellite during an entire mission life. In this study, a design process of EPS system was introduced including power budget analysis considering a mission orbit and various mission modes of the satellite. In conclusion, adequate EPS hardware in compliance with design requirements were selected. The effectiveness and mission capability of EPS architecture design were confirmed through an energy balance analysis (EBA).

  • Super-realistic content technology has recently attracted attention as a core of the "new normal" that can overcome the spatial constraints caused by pandemics. It is moreover the core that allows users in remote locations to meet and engage in various social, cultural, and economic activities based on a network. Content technology is rapidly spreading beyond the existing entertainment area to various industries as an innovative tool that can be used to overcome space-time constraints and improve the productivity of industrial sites, because reality and virtual reality are now super-connected with ultra-low latency. However, existing services such as teleconferencing and tele-collaboration do not provide a level of realism that replaces face-to-face services, and various technical requirements have been proposed to overcome this. The trends in core technologies such as XR twins, hyper-realistic reproduction, sensory interaction, and emotional recognition technology, which are necessary for interactive realistic content that leads to feelings, from reproduction to experience and emotion, are explained. In this article, our aim is to present the future of realistic content that enables human care and can even overcome psychological difficulties such as the "Corona blues".

  • This study proposes to identify digital library services applying cutting-edge technologies, and attempt to investigate the applicability of these technologies and services to domestic libraries. To this end, we reviewed main research which discusses next generation digital libraries, and examined thoroughly main technologies which can be applied to future libraries. As a result, the core technologies, concepts, and tools of the next generation of digital library are: cloud services, space for infinite creating (makerspace), big data, augmented reality, context-aware technologies, Google-glass, a revolutionary display technology, open linked-content-offering method, and so on. Specific cases of libraries already utilizing these technologies are also discussed.

  • Space technology is a core technology which is emerging as the most competitive industry in the 21st century. However, it is said that private enterprises may have some limitations to run the space business independently because the space industry requires not only to enormously spend the amount of investment at the beginning stage of business but also to have lots of difficulties to get the amount of investment in the short period of time. Therefore, the advanced countries of having the space industry such as America, Japan, France and so on have been developing the space technologies through the help of their governments to some level at the beginning stage of business. Korea established the space development promotion law in 2005. Also Korea has been making efforts to correct the national space development middle and long term basic plans. However, while Korea becomes the 8th economic country in the world, Korea does not have a large enterprise which has ability to supply the domestic satellite demands, and to export satellites to foreign countries by developing satellites without having any help from foreign companies. Therefore, this paper described the activating scheme of satellite industry to efficiently carry out the Korea's space development mission, and to enforce the global competitive power.

  • The mission objective of STEP Cube Lab. (Cube Laboratory for Space Technology Experimental Project) classified as a pico-class satellite is to find space core technologies researched at domestic industry or university and to verify these technologies on mission orbit. To implement this objective, system level electrical integration and function test (EIT) by using developed flight software were performed in compliance with system requirements. And the effectiveness of the flight model (FM) was verified through launch and thermal vacuum test at acceptance level. This paper will introduce a series of process of electrical function tests for FM EIT, launch and thermal vacuum tests.

  • With the rapid progress of location based services, GIS, and ubiquitous computing technologies, the space that we are dealing with is no longer limited to outdoor space but being extended to indoor space. Indoor space has some differences from outdoor space, therefore to provide integrated spaces and seamless services, it is required to establish new theories, data models, and systems. For this reason, ambitious project has been launched last year to establish a theoretical background, develop a core technologies and systems, and provide services of indoor spatial awareness. In this paper, we present an overall sketch on the project and major research topics. First, we present the ISA (indoor spatial awareness) project with its goal and research topics. Second, a simplified 3D spatial model, called prism model, is proposed as a basic data types and operators of indoor spatial DBMS. Third, a indoor feature data model, developed T. Kolbe et al. who is a member of this project team, is introduced in this paper. This model provides a basis for the integration of different spaces.
