This study has examined influences of tropical cyclone (TC) landfalls on the Gyoengsangbuk-do region, located in southeast of Korea, for the period 1978-2006. This region is known as one of major pass ways of landfalling TCs, and has many cultural properties including Bulguksa, Sukgulam, etc. Thus the influences caused by TCs (i.e., TC damages) may be larger than elsewhere in the nation. Here, TC influence is defined as the cases of strong instantaneous wind speed (${\geq}20ms^{-1}$) and heavy rainfall (${\geq}100mmday^{-1}$) at each station. This study analyzed long-term trends ofTC influences and the relationship with TC tracks are examined. As a result, it is found that large increase of the heavy rainfall cases along the coastal region. By contrast, there are marginal changes in the strong wind speed associated with TC landfalls. Further, it is also found that the cases of the heavy rainfall only are related with TCs passing through the Yellow Sea and the cases of both the strong wind and the heavy rainfall are related with TCs landing from southern Korea.
A fine-grid (3 km ${\times}$ 3 km), three-dimensional nowcast system of sea levels, currents, temperature, and salinity is being developed for the Taiwan Strait. The project takes a balanced approach relying equally on models and observations, will have the capacity of real-time data assimilation, and is aimed at both practical and scientific applications. To determine boundary conditions and verify model results, eight coastal tide-gauge stations were first established along both sides of the strait. Strait-wide hydrographic surveys were conducted by research vessels. Currents are being measured using bottom-mounted ADCP moorings in a meridional deep channel off southwest Taiwan and along a traverse section in the central part of the strait. In addition to a fine-resolution three-dimensional model of the Taiwan Strait, an adjoint model and a larger-domain two-dimensional model were used to better determine boundary conditions in the northern and southern boundaries of the strait. In the first stage of model development, barotropic tides were successfully simulated in a hindcast mode. The protocol product has been released to general public, including government agencies, universities and general users.

The macrobenthic faunal community of Gwangyang Bay comprised 154 species and showed the overall mean density of 1,286 individuals/$m^2$. Polychaetes were the most important component of the macrofaunal community in species richness, abundance and biomass. The dominant species in abundance were poly-chaetes like Tharyx sp.(44.8%), Lumbrineris longifolia(14.0%), Heteromastus filiformis(3.6%), a mussel Mytilus edulis, and an amphipod crustacean Corophium sinense. The abundance and biomass in the western part of the bay were lower than in the channel regions and mouth of the bay. The community indices showed the same trend in the spatial distribution with the abundance and species richness. The study area can be divided into seven station groups; five station groups in the eastern part, two groups in the channel and open mouth part of the bay.
Continued to the previous paper, the present investigation deals with stronitium-90 activities and calcium contents among 54 samples of edible marine algae collected along the coast of Korea during September, 1973 and April, 1974. The calcium contents are variable 2.0-17.8%, and 6.38% on an average. Most of the members investigated contain 2-4% in green and red algae, and 8-10% in brown algae. Strontium-90 activities are 0.32-0.37 pCi/l in sea-water, and 0.80-28.66 pCi$\^$90/Sr/g Ca in edible seaweeds. Among the algal phyla, they are 12.49 in green, 3.34 in brown, and 9.39 pCi$\^$90/Sr/g Ca in red algae, while they are 6.25 pCi$\^$90/Sr/g Ca on an average. In a single species collected at the same season, the highest activities appear mostly from the eastern coast, and from the western and southern coasts, in turn. The green algae, Capsosiphon- Enteromorpha complex show about 3 times higher activities, 28.66 pCi$\^$90/Sr /g Ca compared with the other members showing rather higher activities, and would be an indicator plant of strontium-90 activities of the marine algae along the coast of Korea.
A total of 460 palaeomagnetic samples was collected from the Tertiary Chongja-Ulsan basins and surrounding area in the southeastern part of Korean peninsula. All samples were stepwise demagnetized by either alternating field or thermal method. It was found that most sample-sites have ChRM declination which has been rotated clockwise from the north-south reference direction of Tertiary East Asia, although other two extrusive sample-sites within the Chongja sedimentary basin show counterclockwise rotation of ChRM declination. Fold tests for the site-mean ChRMs of the latter two sites reveal insignificant result and negative result with 95% confidence level, respectively. The amount of the clockwise deflection of declination varies from about $20^{\circ}$ upto about $80^{\circ}$ according to the block to which each sample-site belongs. The amount of the counterclockwise deflection is about $20^{\circ}$. It is concluded that the clockwise ChRM rotation has been caused by dextral simple shearing accompanied by NNW-SSE spreading of the East Sea which has been active until about 16Ma, and that the counterclockwise rotation is a result of sinistral simple shearing associated with WNW-ESE contraction in the Korean Strait-SW Japan region at about 15 Ma.
A total of 113 samples (basalts, tuffs, and siltstones from coal-bearing sediments) was collected from 14 sites of the Tertiary Changgi basin in southeastern Korea, and studied palaeomagnetically. Site-mean declination of the ChRM from 5 sites was found to be deflected clockwise about $30^{\circ}$. Other 5 sites showed no vertical-axis deflection of ChRM direction. In consideration of previous palaeomagnetic data from other Tertiary basins in the vicinity, it is interpreted that the deflection of ChRM directions has been caused by NNW-SSE simple shear associated with the opening of the East Sea, and the time of rotation should be about 16 Ma. Other 2 sites showed counterclockwise deflection of site-mean ChRM. These sites might be located among lager tectonic blocks which were rotating clockwise. AMS (anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility) study revealed $NE{\rightarrow}SW$ directed magnetic lineation at two tuffaceous sites. This might indicate flow direction of tuffs during the time of deposition. Most of the other sites showed load-foliation lying subparallel to the bedding plane. This must have been caused by gravitational loading acted vertically to the strata.

The neritid species Clithon retropictus inhabits rivers and estuaries along the southern coast of the Korean mainland but has not been previously reported from Jeju Island. In 2007 and 2011 specimens of this species were obtained from two separate localities on the south coast of the island. Comparisons were made with von Martens' original description, specimens from the Korean mainland, and illustrations and descriptions in the literature. Although there were some differences in color and markings, and slight differences in morphology, the specimens from Jeju Island compare well with those from the mainland and in the literature. The shells of this species become more ovate and more eroded with age. In one locality, a small river, specimens of the pleurocerid Semisulcospira libertina (Gould, 1859), were found adjacent to, and coexisting with, a population of C. retropictus, an association that often occurs. The occurrence of Clithon retropictus represents a range extension to Jeju Island.
Population genetic assessment is essential for the conservation and management of endangered and rare plants. Neofinetia falcata is endangered epiphyte orchid and protected by law in Korea. In Korea, this species is only found on islands in the South Sea of Korea (including Jeju-do) and the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. We developed nine microsatellite makers to assess the genetic diversity and population genetic structure of three populations of N. falcata. The genetic diversity at the species level was low, which can be attributed to inbreeding or fragmentation into small, isolated populations. A recent bottleneck was detected in one population, likely due to overcollection. N. falcata exhibited moderated levels of differentiation among populations, with the three populations were divided into two clusters based on genetic structure. The genetic diversity and structure of N. falcata are affected by restricted gene flow by pollen or seeds due to isolation and geographic distance. Strategies for in situ and ex situ conservation of this species are been proposed based on the results of our study.
The storm surges caused by the typhoon Brenda in 1985 were studied by analysing tidal observation data at 7 stations along the south coast of the Korean peninsula. The tidal deviation at these stations along the coast are discussed in association with meteorological data. The sea level anomalies were studied by means of the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis and the Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) method. From the result of EOF analysis, the temporal and spatial variations of storm surge were described by the first mode of EOF, which is $73\%$ of the total variances during the passage of typhoon Brenda. From the results of FFT spectral analysis, the peak energy of the autospectrum for surge, atmospheric pressure, and wind stress appeared in the low frequency fluctuations band. The result of FFT analysis showed that the typhoon surge was related chiefly to the atmospheric pressure change in an open bay such as Cheju and Keomundo harbor, while it was influenced mainly by the wind stress in the semi-enclosed waters of Yeosu, Chungmu and Kadukdo.

Brown alga Undaria peterseniana has been interested in the commercial scale aquaculture for warm water species development in southern coastal area of Korea. However, this species was classified an endangered species caused by a decrease in habitat and natural population. In this study, inhabit characteristics of U. peterseniana was investigated in their natural habitat of Ulleung Island, Korea. The U. peterseniana population was occurred dense patches at 20~30m depth. Total length of the alga reached 1.0~2.0m and the largest width ranged 10.0~35.0cm during the study. In 2013, habitats of this species increased two sites compared with the previous year and their distribution extended to low depth (10m) of coastal area. In long-term data, seawater temperature revealed a continuous increment by strong going north of East Korea Warm Current or Ulleung Warm Eddy turning around the coast of Ulleung Island. It suggested that habitat extension of U. peterseniana may be caused by suitable settlement condition and increase of warm water around the coastal area. Current studies of this species may be continuously required in the possibility of fisheries resources as aquaculture species and index species of increment of water temperature at the fixed monitoring site in East Sea. This is the first study to research ecological feature U. peterseniana population at the natural habitat of Ulleung Island.
