We investigated the moth diversity on an island of southern sea of Korea. We collected moths at three sites on the island of Bogildo, Wando-gun, Jeonnam using a 22-watt ultraviolet light trap from May to October, 2008, and identified a total of 272 species and 948 individuals in 13 families. Species of Noctuidae was the most abundant, with 107 species and 318 individuals, followed by Geometridae (62 species and 147 individuals) and Pyralidae (53 species and 269 individuals). The graph of the estimated species richness in Chao 1 (432.25$\pm$37.39) did not reach an asymptote, which suggests that more moth species could be identified on the island through further sampling. An arctiid moth, Miltochrista striata, was the most abundant species captured in this study. Monthly changes in moth species richness and abundance formed M-shaped curves, with peaks in early summer (June) and late summer (August). Cluster analysis of seven sites on three islands (Aphaedo Island, Sinan-gun, Oenarodo Island, Goheung-gun and Bogildo Island) divided the sites into two groups. Distances among sites and habitat types may play an important role in determining the similarities of moth faunas among sites.
The study of geomorphology of tidal flat using remote sensing image has been considered useful because of it's ability to acquire data periodically. Especially, the Near Infrared band of satellite image has been used to divide between land and sea area. This study extracted a borderline of the tidal flat using Landsat-5 images and generated DEM(Digital elevation model) using tide level data as elevation value. DEM is a useful tool for three-dimensional survey of geomorphology and can be used for survey of tidal flat. This study divided 8 images of 1990's into two parts - before 1994 and after 1994 - and generated DEM respectively. In this work, the areas of tidal flats are calculated and it was revealed the area of tidal flat was decreased after 1994.
Two species of the unrecorded congrid eel, Ariosoma major (Asano, 1958) and Rhynchoconger ectenurus (Jordan and Richardson, 1909) were collected for the first time from the Southern and Western Sea of Korea. A. major closely resembled A. shiroanago, but differed from the latter in having lesser number of lateral line pores before vent and vertebrae. R. ectenurus was very similar to R. brachuata, but differed from the latter in having slender tail and a great number of vertebrae. A key to the genera and species of the family Congridae from Korea was given. New Korean name "Kunhuin-bungchangeo" was proposed for the A. major, and "Gomunkkori-bungchangeo", R. ectenurus, respectively.

Monthly fluctuation in abundance and species composition of fish in coastal waters off Oenaro island, Goheung were investigated using seasonal samples collected by a shrimp beam trawl in 2018. A total of 5,981 fishes were sampled and classified into 48 species, 32 families, and 9 orders. The dominant species was Engraulis japonicus (993 individuals, 16.60%), Amblychaeturichthys hexanema (844 individuals, 14.11%), and Thryssa kammalensis (674 individuals, 11.27%). The highest number of individuals was found in August (958 individuals), while the lowest number of individuals was found in January (136 individuals). The diversity index was the highest in November (H' = 2.37) and the lowest in January (H' = 1.77).
The ecological distribution of endomycorrhizas in evergreen woody species native to the evergreen forest ecosystem of Tadohae-haesang National Park in southern Korea in February, 1989 was studied. The abundance and diversity of vesicular-arbuscular (VA) mycorrhizal fungi were also determined. The spore densities ranged from 14 to 326 per 100 g of soil. Most of the spores of mycorrhizal fungi collected from 25 soil samples belonged to the genera Glomus and Gigaspora. The frequency and number of spores in Camellia japonica varied with location. Spores belonging to the genus Gigaspora were not found in Camellia japonica in Yesongri evergreen forests adjacent to the sea. Glomus sp. was the major constituent of the spore assemblage at this site. The most abundant species in Camellia japonica in the Yesongri evergreen forests in Pogildo was Glomus borealis. In the soil of a mountain at Buwhangri, in the central location of the island at an elevation of 250 m, Gigaspora sp. was present and Glomus sp. was a major constituent of the spore assemblage. In the urban area of Haenam spore densities were much higher than in the Pogildo area. The most abundant species in Camellia japonica in the urban area of Haenam was Gigaspora sp..
The quantitative determination of carotenoids, chlorophylls and their degradation products from marine phytoplankton was performed by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Separated and quantified chlorophylls and their degraded products are chlorophyll a, b, c, chlorophyllide a, phaeophytin a, b and phaeophorbide a. Concentrations of six carotenoids including fucoxanthin, 19'-butanoyloxyfucoxanthin, 19'-hexanoyloxyfucoxan-thin, prasinoxanthin, alloxanthin, zoaxanthin/lutein were also determined from natural field samples by absorbance. Results of pigment analysis of field samples collected from the southern waters of the East Sea on October 8th, 1996 were reported. Concentration of chi a ranged from 7.2 to 180.4 ng/1. Concentration of chi b and chi c ranged from 22.7 to 53.7 ng/1 and from 3.3 to 58.5 ng/1, respectively. Significant concentrations of phaeophytin a, and chlorophyllide a were also detected at different depths. Fucoxanthin, 19'-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin and zoaxanthin/lutein were the most abundant carotenoids and 19'-butanoyloxyfucoxanthin, prasinoxanthin and alloxanthin were also detected relatively at low concentrations. These results of pigment analyses suggest predominance of diatom, prymnesiophytes and cyanobacteria and presence of crysophyte, green algae (prasinophyte and prochlorophyte), and cryptophyte in the study area on October 8th, 1996, We report prymnesiophyte for the first time as an important biomass component of marine phytoplankton in the study area. Vertical profiles for the concentration changes of the major pigments were also given.

In a survey of net-caged yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata in the southern parts of Korean Peninsula, we found infestations of ciliate in the gills of the moribund fish during the abnormally elevated temperature. The ciliate was very similar to genus Colpoda Muller, 1773 on morphological and reproductive characteristics. Histopathological changes revealed that the ciliate invaded gills only, causing extensive destruction of the gill filaments including lamella without any clinical signs found in the other organs and tissues. This is the first record of the parasitic ciliate in cultured yellowtail.
We investigated the impacts of the diabatic heating location, vertical profile and basic state on the Rossby wave propagation. To examine the dynamical process of individual responses on the regional heat source, a dry version of the linear baroclinic model was used with climatological summertime (JJA) mean basic state and vertical structure of the diabatic heating for 1979-2008. Two sets of diabatic heating were constructed of those positioned in the mid-latitudes (Tibetan Plateau, eastern Mediterranean Sea, and the west-central Asia) and the tropics (the southern India, Bay of Bengal, and western Pacific). It was found that using the principal component analysis, atmospheric response to diabatic heating reaches to the steady state in 19th days in time. The prescribed mid-latitude forcing forms equivalent barotropic Rossby wave propagation along the westerly Asia jets, whereas the tropical forcing generates the Rossby wave train extending from the tropics to mid-latitudes. In relation to the maximum vertical profile, the mid-level forcing reveals a stronger response than the lower-level forcing, which may be caused by more effective Rossby wave response by the upper-level divergent flow. Under the different sub-seasonal mean state, both of the tropical and mid-latitude forcing induce the different sub-seasonal response intensity, due to the different basic-state wind.

The genus Pterosiphonia is composed of 22 species worldwide and four of these species have been reported in the North-East Asia. In Korea, P. pennata originally described from the Mediterranean Sea has been previously recorded from the southern coast as a widespread species. In order to confirm the same species from Korea and Mediterranean, we observed the morphology of Korean Pterosiphonia specimen and analyzed rbcL sequences for inferring phylogenetic relationships among similar congeners. Korean entity was recognized as a new species, Pterosiphonia arenosa sp. nov. The new species is characterized by ecorticate axes with 7-10 pericentral cells, branches formed every two segments, and coalesced with main axis over 1-1.25 axial segments, and tetrasporangia formed in straight series on determinate branches of the upper parts of erect axes. A phylogenetic analysis of rbcL sequences demonstrated that P. arenosa was distinct from P. pennata found in Spain as well as other species. In conclusion, morphological and molecular sequence data indicated that P. arenosa sp. nov. has been previously misidentified as P. pennata in Korea.
The seasonal patterns of sediment supply were investigated during the period of June 1999 to June 2000 on a coastal foredune of Seungbong Island, Korea. Sediment supply was determined from measurements of geomorphic changes in the foredune and beach along six lines. Most sands were deposited on the dunefoot and foredune area during the winter and spring, from November to April. The largest amount of sands was deposited along the lines 5 and 6 near the sea-dike in the southern tip of the dune area. In general, the sand on the beach was gradually eroded in spring, summer and fall but deposited in winter. Total sediment accumulation over the study period was $484m^3$ for the foredune and $345m^3$ for the beach. The volume of the foredune increased in the winter and spring, whereas the volume of beach increased in the winter. Variation in sediment deposition appears to be controlled primarily by variations in the seasonal wind regime.
