Seasonal and solar activity variations of the Weddell Sea Anomaly observed in the TOPEX TEC measurements

  • The Weddell Sea Anomaly (WSA) in the ionosphere is characterized by higher plasma density at night than during the day in the region near the Weddell Sea. According to previous studies on the WSA, it is known to occur mostly in southern summer and has not been reported in other seasons. We have utilized more than 13-year TOPEX TEC measurements in order to study how the WSA varies with seasons and how it changes with solar activity. The TOPEX TEC data have been extensively utilized for the climatological study of the ionosphere due to its excellent spatial and temporal coverage. We investigate the seasonal and solar activity variations of the WSA using four seasonal cases (Mar. equinox, Jun. solstice, Sep, equinox, and Dec. solstice) and two solar activity conditions (F10.7<120 for solar minimum and F10.7>120 for solar maximum conditions) for geomagnetically quiet periods. Our analysis shows that the WSA occurs only in the southern summer hemisphere for low F10.7, as in previous studies, but the WSA occurs all of seasons except for winter when F10.7 is high: it is most prominent during the December solstice (southern summer) and still strong during both equinoxes. The WSA appears to be an extreme case of global longitudinal variations at mid- and high-latitudes.

The Species of Penguins and Penguins Occurring in the Vicinity of King Sejong Station (남극 세종기지 부근에 출현하는 펭귄)

  • Penguins are one of the key constituent organisms in the Antarctic ecosystem. A total of 18 species of penguins occur only in the southern hemisphere from the Galapagos Archipelago to southern area off Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, South America, and the islands scattered in the Southern Ocean to the coast along the Antarctic Continent. In the Antarctic Treaty area, there are only 5 species of penguins such as Emperor (Aptenodytes forsteri), Gentoo (Pygoscelis papua ellsworthi), Adelie (P. adeliae), Chinstrap (p. antarctica), and Macaroni (Eudyptes chrysolophus) penguins. Two additional species, the King (Aptenodytes patagonicus patagonicus) and Rockhopper (Eudyptes chrysocome) penguins, however, are distributed within the Antarctic Convergence. In the vicinity of king Sejong Station located in King George Island, the South Shetland Islands off the Antarctic Peninsula, 5 species are observed, among which 2 Pygoscelis species such as the Gentoo and Chinstrap penguins hatch their eggs and raise their chicks at the rookery 2km south offing Sejong Station in summer. Adelie penguins hatch their chicks in other place in King George Island. One Emperor penguin roamed on the frozen Maxwell Bay which has been frozen every two or three years with the approximate thickness of 60cm. And one Macaroni penguin also visited the rookery in summer. We should carry out researches on the penguins occurring in the vicinity of King Sejong Station to monitor the environmental changes around King Sejong Station and the South Shetland Islands.

The Motion of Plasma in an Excited Quiescent Filament

  • Quiescent filaments are bigger, more stable, and longer lived than active region filaments. So, the shape of a quiescent filament changes little during its lifetime and a fast motion of plasma rarely occurs. But when it is dynamically influenced by external phenomena, a rapid motion of plasma may temporarily occur. By analyzing the motion of plasma we can infer some of the magnetic structure permeating such an excited quiescent filament. We analyzed the H$\alpha$ images of a quiescent filament in the northern hemisphere that was observed at Big Bear Solar Observatory on 2004 August 2, and found that: 1) the filament was excited by a flare that occurred in a remote active region located in the southern hemisphere, 2) By this excitation, a part of the filament moved vertically upward and horizontally out of main body, and then it stayed there without much motion. Then after it moved vertically downward and horizontally to the main body, 3) the final position of plasma, however, was not the same as the initial position, being about 14Mm above it. We suggest that the filament was initially in a more or less static equilibrium. The excitation of the filament broke the initial equilibrium, and then brought about a new one that is different from the original one. Since the filament should have magnetic field, it is likely that both the equilibria may have been maintained by diplike magnetic structures. Furthermore, the transition from one equilibrium to another as we inferred should have accompanied a permanent change of magnetic configuration as well.

Comparative Analysis on the Heating and Cooling Loads Associated with U-value, SHGC and Orientation of the Windows in Different Regions (창호의 열관류율, 일사취득계수와 향의 배치가 건물의 냉난방 부하에 미치는 영향에 관한 지역별 비교연구)

  • The primary goal of this research is to identify the impacts of window design on the energy use in buildings which takes up about 25% of the total energy consumption. Recently, efficient use of energy is gaining more importance in buildings. Window design, especially being dependent on glazing performance choices, is an important factor for reducing energy consumption in most of the buildings. It also is influenced by the latitude of the site and window orientation. This paper aims at identifying the influence of Window performance indicators(U-value, SHGC), orientation and latitude on the building energy consumption with systematically designed simulations. Comparative study has been performed for five different locations; Greenland, Korea, Singapore, Argentina and Chile along with the different window U-value and SHGC values. The results show that optimum window system with properly coordinated window performance indicators(U-value, SHGC), orientation achieves dramatic reduction of energy consumptions. Windows with low U-value could reduce heating loads and high SHGC could reduce cooling loads. The study also verifies that the windows installed at south facade is more energy efficient in the northern hemisphere while windows facing north is more energy efficient in the southern hemisphere.

A pathogen of New Zealand Pyropia plicata (Bangiales, Rhodophyta), Pythium porphyrae (Oomycota)

  • Geographic distributions of pathogens are affected by dynamic processes involving host susceptibility, availability and abundance. An oomycete, Pythium porphyrae, is the causative agent of red rot disease, which plagues Pyropia farms in Korea and Japan almost every year and causes serious economic damage. We isolated an oomycete pathogen infecting Pyropia plicata from a natural population in Wellington, New Zealand. The pathogen was identified as Pythium porphyrae using cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 and internal transcribed spacer of the rDNA cistron molecular markers. Susceptibility test showed that this Pythium from New Zealand was able to infect several different species and genera of Bangiales including Pyropia but is not able to infect their sporophytic (conchocelis) phases. The sequences of the isolated New Zealand strain were also identical to Pythium chondricola from Korea and the type strain from the Netherlands. Genetic species delimitation analyses found no support for separating P. porphyrae from P. chondricola, nor do we find morphological characters to distinguish them. We propose that Pythium chondricola be placed in synonymy with P. porphyrae. It appears that the pathogen of Pyropia, both in aquaculture in the northern hemisphere and in natural populations in the southern hemisphere is one species.

Quantitative analysis of massonianoside B in Pinus species using HPLC/PDA

  • Pinus species are native to the Northern Hemisphere and some parts of the tropics to temperate regions in the Southern Hemisphere. They were used as food and medicine in prehistoric times. Massonianoside B is a compound found in pine trees and possesses antioxidant activity. In order to determine the presence and content of this compound in Pinus species, three different parts (needles, branches, and bark) of three Pinus species were extracted and investigated. High-performance liquid chromatography with a gradient elution system along with a reverse-phase INNO column with photodiode array detector was employed. Results showed that the branches of the three Pinus species had higher massonianoside B content (5.502 to 9.751 mg/g DW) than either the needles or bark. Furthermore, among the three species, P. rigida × P. taeda had the highest concentration of total massonianoside B (11.557 mg/g DW). These findings thus provide evidence of biological activity in Pinus species and establish a foundation for further research.

A Study on Improvement of the Use and Quality Control for New GNSS RO Satellite Data in Korean Integrated Model (한국형모델의 신규 GNSS RO 자료 활용과 품질검사 개선에 관한 연구)

  • This study examined the impact of assimilating the bending angle (BA) obtained via the global navigation satellite system radio occultation (GNSS RO) of the three new satellites (KOMPSAT-5, FY-3C, and FY-3D) on analyses and forecasts of a numerical weather prediction model. Numerical data assimilation experiments were performed using a three-dimensional variational data assimilation system in the Korean Integrated Model (KIM) at a 25-km horizontal resolution for August 2019. Three experiments were designed to select the height and quality control thresholds using the data. A comparison of the data with an analysis of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) integrated forecast system showed a clear positive impact of BA assimilation in the Southern Hemisphere tropospheric temperature and stratospheric wind compared with that without the assimilation of the three new satellites. The impact of new data in the upper atmosphere was compared with observations using the infrared atmospheric sounding interferometer (IASI). Overall, high volume GNSS RO data helps reduce the RMSE quantitatively in analytical and predictive fields. The analysis and forecasting performance of the upper temperature and wind were improved in the Southern and Northern Hemispheres.

Ecliptic Survey for Unknown Asteroids with DEEP-South

  • Eight hundred thousand asteroids in the solar system have been identified so far under extensive sky surveys. Kilometer to sub-km sized asteroids, however, are still waiting for discovery, and their size and orbital distribution will provide a better understanding of the collisional and dynamical evolution of the solar system. In order to study the number of asteroids which is detectable with 1.6 m telescope and their orbital distribution, we conducted a small observation campaign as a part of Deep Ecliptic Patrol of the Southern Sky (DEEP-South) project, which is an asteroid survey in the southern hemisphere with Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet). We observed the ecliptic plane near opposition ($2^{\circ}{\times}2^{\circ}$ field of view centering on ${\alpha}=22h40m31s$, ${\delta}=-08^{\circ}22^{\prime}58^{{\prime}{\prime}}$) in August 2018, and identified 464 moving objects by visual inspection. As a result, 266 of 464 moving objects turn out to be previously unknown asteroids, and their signal to noise ratio is below two on numerous occasions. Most of the newly detected objects are main belt asteroids (MBAs), while three Hildas, one Jupiter trojan, and two Hungarias are also identified. In this meeting, we report the differences in the orbital distributions between the previously known asteroids and newly discovered ones using statistical methods. We also talk about the observational bias of this survey and suggest future works.

DEEP-South: Round-the-clock Census of Small bodies in the Southern Sky

  • As of early 2015, more than 12,000 Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) have been catalogued by the Minor Planet Center, however their observational properties such as broadband colors and rotational periods are known only for a small fraction of the population. Thanks to time series observations with the KMTNet, orbits, optical sizes (and albedo), spin states and three dimensional shapes of asteroids and comets including NEOs will be systematically investigated and archived for the first time. Based on SDSS and BVRI colors, their approximate surface mineralogy will also be characterized. This so-called DEEP-South (Deep Ecliptic Patrol of the Southern Sky) project will provide a prompt solution to the demand from the scientific community to bridge the gaps in global sky coverage with a coordinated use of the network of ground-based telescopes in the southern hemisphere. We will soon finish implementing dedicated software subsystem consisted of automated observation scheduler and data pipeline for the sake of increased discovery rate, rapid follow-up, timely phase coverage, and efficient data analysis. We will give a brief introduction to test runs conducted at CTIO with the first KMTNet telescope in February and March 2015 and experimental data processing. Preliminary scientific results will also be presented.

KMTNet Supernova Project : The Initial Status

  • We are at the initial performance-verification phase of our KMTNet Supernova Project (KSP) using the three wide-field telescopes of the KMTNet in the southern hemisphere. The primary science objectives of KSP, which take advantage of its unique 24-hour continuous sky coverage, are to study early (i.e., within a few hours from explosion) and rare/peculiar (e.g. fast decay) supernovae (SNe), SN progenitors, explosion mechanisms, as well as other exotic optical transients. We present the initial status/results of the program, along with the program strategy, science objectives, target fields, and future plan. While the target field selection will be made based on the performance of the system and consideration of various scientific merits, the initial target fields are focused on nearby galaxies with increased cadence and filter coverage.
