This paper investigated the characteristics of population structure and the determinants of population movement in the south west area of Kyonggi-do by grouping 9 cities in 3 categories and using Panel data of $1995{\sim}2001$. The major findings of this paper were identified as follows : 1) The population structure of regions was different to the stages of urbanization. The ratio of child and elder dependency was high in the rural regions and low in the urbanized regions. It was due to the movement of economically active population of $20{\sim}40$ aged groups, from rural regions to urban regions. This means that more productive segments of the rural population leave the country to the city. In addition. The ratio of male to female was higher in $20{\sim}40$ aged groups for rural regions. This suggested that young females moved from rural regions to urban regions more than young males in the process of industrialization. 2) Based in pooling regression, income was the most significant determinant that could explain the inter-regional and intra-regional movement of population for south west area studied, The next one was educational opportunity variable. The coefficients of income and education were 0.5, 0,7 for intra-regional migration and 0.01, 0.02 for interregional migration indicating that Todaro's hypothesis could be tested well rather than Tiebout' model for this area.
This article is written in the viewpoint of landscape ecological geography. The coast of South Chung-chong Province will make new characters of region in the development strategies program. This study is to describe geomorphological landscapes of South Chung-chong Province relating with it's environment based on the coast. Although landforms constitute prominent landscape features as tidal flats and rock cliff do, it is nonetheless the features such as beaches, sanddunes, and coastal plains that have various ramifications for human communities. Tidal flats, beaches and coastal sanddunes are special in that their formation is attributable to the combined action of tidal flows, waves and winds. To some extent, the erosion of sand has been a global phenomenon. Human impact are involved. The influence of globalization and expansion of liberal trade appears in regions variously. Individual regions need to secure its competitiveness in the world market. Regions are not value-neutral abstract conception, but must be informal commercialized characters of region. The coast of South Chung-chong Province has experienced rapid and dramatic changes. In industrial times, the middle of west coast Korea turned into a major reclamation at larger scale. Reclaimed land was based on location of industry and mechanized agriculture. The west coast highway and bridges between island and land contributed to the development of west coast transportation. As information society matured, trend and value are changing. Environment and ecology emphasize and rediscover the value of tidal flats and sanddunes. The west coast region now receives attention as eco-tour and sustainable course.
In this study, 15 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were used to analyze the population structure of 55 mungbean accessions (34 from South Asia, 20 from West Asia, 1 sample from East Asia). A total of 56 alleles were detected, with an average of 3.73 per locus. The mean of major allele frequency, expected heterozygosity and polymorphic information content for 15 SSR loci were 0.72, 0.07 and 0.33 respectively. The mean of major allele frequency was 0.79 for South Asia, and 0.74 for West Asia. The mean of genetic diversity and polymorphic information content were almost similar for South Asian and West Asian accessions (genetic diversity 0.35 and polymorphic information content 0.29). Model-based structure analysis revealed the presence of three clusters based on genetic distance. Accessions were clearly assigned to a single cluster in which >70% of their inferred ancestry was derived from one of the model-based populations. 47 accessions (85.56%) showed membership with the clusters and 8 accessions (14.54%) were categorized as admixture. The results could be used to understanding the genetic structure of mungbean cultivars from these regions and to support effective breeding programs to broaden the genetic basis of mungbean varieties.
Extreme precipitation events have recently become a leading cause of disasters. Thus, investigating the variability and trends of extreme precipitation is crucial to mitigate the increasing impact of such events. Spatial distribution and temporal trends in annual precipitation and four extreme precipitation indices of duration (CWD), frequency (R10 mm), intensity (Rx1day), and percentile-based threshold (R95pTOT) were analyzed using the daily precipitation data of 10 observation stations in Chungcheong province during 1974-2020. The precipitation at all observation stations, except the Boryeong station, showed nonsignificant increasing trends at 95% confidence level (CL) and increasing magnitudes from the west to east regions. The high variability in mean annual precipitation was more pronounced around the northeast and northwest regions. Similarly, there were moderate to high patterns in extreme precipitation indices around the northeast region. However, the precipitation indices of duration and frequency consistently increased from the west to east regions, while those of intensity and percentile-based threshold increased from the south to east regions. Nonsignificant increasing trends dominated in CWD, R10 mm, and Rx1day at all stations, except for R10 mm at Boeun station and Rx1day at Cheongju and Jecheon stations, which showed a significantly increasing trend. The spatial distribution of trend magnitude shows that R10 mm increased from the west to east regions. Furthermore, variations in precipitation were very strongly correlated (99% CL) with R10 mm, Rx1day, and R95pTOT at all stations, except with wR10 mm at Cheongju station, which was strongly correlated with a 95% CL.
Cultural practices for adzuki bean and the distribution of weed species in the south-west regions of Korea were surveyed to provide information on effective weed management. Approximately 27.5% of the farm households were growing adzuki bean in an area larger than 1 ha while the rest grew the crop in an area smaller than 1 ha. Of all adzuki bean growers, 17.1% seeded in early June, 8.6% in mid June, 34.3% in late June, 17.1% in early July, 20.0% in mid July, and 2.9% in late July. The average planting distance was $71.0{\times}29.5cm$. From the 40 surveys in adzuki bean fields, 35 weed species in 17 families were identified. According to the occurrence frequency, the dominant weed species were Digitaria sanguinalis, Acalypha australis, Cyperus amuricus, Echinochloa crus-galli, and Amaranthus nangostanus in decreasing order of dominance. However, based on dry weight, Chenopodium album (34.4%) was the most dominant followed by Acalypha australis (21.9%), Amaranthus nangostanus (19.1%), Digitaria sanguinalis (7.5%), and Portulaca oleracea (6.1%). The exotic weeds found in the field of adzuki were Ipomoea hederacea, Abutilon avicennae, and Celosia argentea. The plant heights of I. hederacea, A. avicennae, and C. argentea were 259 cm, 98 cm, and 76 cm, respectively, while the fresh weights were 850 g, 66 g, and 101 g, respectively. Integrated weed management systems utilizing mechanical, chemical, and biological control techniques need to be developed for effective weed management in adzuki bean production.
The cavernous rocks of New Zealand can be grouped broadly into two main geologic types-the massive, metamorphosed, Ordovician, Mt. Arthour Marble of north-west South Island, and the stratified, bioclastic, Tertiary Te Kuiti limestones of western regions of both islands. Although much cave exploration has been carried out in both these regions, the principal study so far has involved caves and karst in the central western portion of North Island near the well-known Waitomo Caves, where some 85km of caves have been surveyed during the past 12 years by members of New Zealand Speleolgical Society.
Seasonal catch distributions of large purse seines and daily landings of coastal set nets were analyzed to understand the migration path of the Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus niphonius around Korean waters. The Spanish mackerel start to move toward the coastal region in the South and West Sea in May for spawning and stay until July, when spawning finishes. Afterwards, they start to migrate to the East China Sea and the southern East Sea and are found irrespective of the onshore and offshore regions. Therefore, they disappear from the offshore region during the spawning season in June and July, and a new recruitment population of age 0 begins to inflow into the coastal fishing grounds in the South Sea and West Sea in August, one month earlier than in the Japanese coastal region of the East Sea.
Anhui Province, with a total north-south length of 570km and an east-west width of 450km and a total area of 139.6 thousand km2, accounts for 1.45% of China's total area. The landform and land feature of Anhui Province is diverse, and generally it can be divided into 5 natural regions: (1) Huaibei Plain; (2) Jianghuai Hillocks; (3) Dabie Mountains in the West of Anhui Province; (4) Yanjiang Plain, (5) Mountain Area of southern Anhui Province. Anhui Province is located in the transitional zone of warm and humid zone and subtropical zone, and its mean annual precipitation is 800-1800mm. The province, which has diverse climate, multiple land forms and many rivers and lakes, passes three basins (Huaihe River, Yangtze River and Xin'an River) and has large differences in the time distribution and regional distribution of water resource. Therefore, the development and usage conditions of the water resource in different regions are different.
Natural resource of the island and coastal regions is one of the most important element of ecological network system in Korea. Currently, there is trend that natural and biological resources such as fishing and tidal wetland have been used to local economic activation in island and coastal regions. According to the 5-days work in a week, island and coastal regions become important amenity resource of citizen's recreation area. Korea is peninsula surrounded by maritime. Especially, South and West Sea surrounded by many islands and tidal flat wetlands are emerging marine ecosystem and seascape in the world. Natural resource is limited, so we have to sustain those resource to current tourism. In this study, I would like to suggest that importance of cultural resource as well as natural resource for 'eco-cultural tourism' in order to keep both biological diversity and cultural diversity as amenity resource for future island economic activation in Korea.
The primary production (PP) by phytoplankton in marine ecosystems is essential for carbon cycling and fueling food webs. Hence, estimating the PP in the territorial sea of each country is a necessary step to achieving carbon neutrality. To estimate the PP in the territorial sea of the Republic of Korea from 2005 to 2021, we analyzed various physiochemical parameters, such as sea surface temperature (SST), Secchi depth, and concentrations of chlorophyll-a and nutrients in the seas of five regions, including the East Sea, West Sea, western South Sea, eastern South Sea, and the waters off Jeju Island. During the 17-year study period, the SST tended to increase, while the nutrient concentrations declined, except in the Jeju area. Overall, the PP did not show a specific temporal trend, but daily PP in the western South Sea was the highest among the five regions. Moreover, the maximum PP in the Korean territorial waters (76,450 km2) was estimated at 11,227 Gg C y-1, which accounts for 0.03% of the global PP. The results may give insights into a better understanding of the PP, further resource utilization, and environmental sustainability in the studied region.
