The use of inedible vegetable oils as substitute for diesel fuel in compression ignition engine is of significance because of the great need for edible oil as food, and the reduction of biodiesel production cost etc. Jatropha curcas oil which is a leading candidate for the commercialization of inedible vegetable oils is selected in this study for reviewing the application in CI engine as an alternative fuel. The important properties of jatropha oil (JO) and JO biodiesel are summarized from the various sources in the literature. It is found that five different types of alternative fuel from JO such as neat JO, JO blends with diesel or other fuel, neat JO biodiesel, JO biodiesel blends with diesel or other fuel and degummed JO were extensively examined in the diesel engine. Two different application types of alternative fuels from JO such as preheating and dual fuelling were also tested, It should be pointed out that most of these applications are limited to single cylinder conditions. The systematic study for the selection of effective application method is required. It is clear that the blends of JOME and diesel can replace diesel fuel up to 10% by volume for running the existing common rail direct injection systems without any durability problems. The systematic assessment of spray characteristics of different types of JO and its derivatives for use as diesel engine fuel is also required.
Flame onset and propagation within hydrogen premixed gas mixture are numerically investigated in an rectangular enclosure. A detailed chemistry for hydrogen reaction is applied to anticipate the thermochemical behavior of intermediate species appropriately. To facilitate computation, 10 species and 16 elementary reaction steps for hydrogen combustion are taken into account. On the basis of 30% of hydrogen concentration in hydrogen-air mixture, the effects of position and quantity of ignition sources on the flame evolution are analyzed. From the simulation results, the methods to decrease the potential hazard caused by the flame propagation are suggested.
In Korea, man-caused forest fires are known originate primarily in coniferous forests. We have hypothesized that the vulnerability of Pinus densiflora forests is principally a consequence of the ignition characteristics of the species. To assess this hypothesis, we conducted two combustion experiments using fallen leaves with a reference species, Quercus variabilis. In the first experiments, in which a cigarette was employed as a primary heat source for the initiation of a forest fire, the Pinus leaves caught fire significantly faster (1'1" at Pinus, 1'31" at Quercus, P < 0.001), and ignition proceeded normally. Quercus leaves, on the other hand, caught fire but did not ignite successfully. In the second set of experiments utilizing different moisture contents and fuel loads, the maximum flame temperature of the Pinus leaves was significantly higher ($421^{\circ}C$ at Pinus, $361^{\circ}C$ at Quercus, P < 0.001) and the combustion persisted for longer than in the Quercus leaves (8'8" at Pinus, 3'38" at Quercus, P < 0.001). The moisture contents of the leaves appeared to be a more important factor in the maximum temperature achieved, whereas the most important factor in burning time was the amount of fuel. Overall, these results support the assumption that Pinus leaves can be ignited even by low-heat sources such as cigarettes. Additionally, once ignited, Pinus leaves burn at a relatively high flame temperature and burn for a prolonged period, thus raising the possibility of frequent fire occurrences and spread into crown fires in forests of P. densiflora.
Light flicker is a notorious phenomenon influencing light quality. The flicker of the light flux outputs from the light sources perceived by human eyes depends upon the lamp brightness fluctuations for projector display. This paper describes a ballast ignition control system, which makes the lamp strike frequency phase lock the blanking time period to minimize the flicker effect
Even if several chemical accident prevention systems such as PSM(Process Safety Management), RMP(Risk Management Plan), etc. have been carried out, many chemical accidents have still occurred at industrial plants in Korea. We describe the status of chemical industry and the trend of occurrence of chemical accidents in Korea. And this paper analyzes the recent chemical accidents in eight ways. These ways include chemical accident forms, ignition sources, sources of chemical equipment, human vs equipment/material causes, worker's working situation, employee scale, hazardous substances, week & time, fatalities of manufacture & contractor's workers. Finally we proposes the four representative prevention measures brought to result of cause analysis by accident statistics.
In this study, temperature characteristics and fire damage form were analyzed to investigate flame spreading form and fire probability from ignition sources subject to drivit component materials which is finishing material in architecture. Ignition sources were limited to a gas torch and exterior panel board fire, and the size of the sample was manufacture in 30 cm length ${\times}$ 50 cm height ${\times}$ 5cm thickness size. Marble (inner wall) + 3 mm drivit (outer wall), marble (inner wall) + 4 mm plaster stone (outer wall), sandwich panel + 3 mm driver bit (outer wall), sandwich panel + 3 mm driver bit + insulation (outer wall), and gypsum board (inner wall) + 3 mm drivit (outer wall) were prepared for the sample. As result of the research for temperature characteristics, large temperature difference by each material was shown in $218^{\circ}C{\sim}995^{\circ}C$ at 30 seconds and $501^{\circ}C{\sim}1078^{\circ}C$ at 300 seconds. Especially when the inner wall was a plaster board, lowest temperature of $501^{\circ}C$ was shown at 300 seconds and marble inner wall showed the following lowest temperature of $900^{\circ}C$. Temperature rising over $1000^{\circ}C$ was shown in other materials. Regarding fire damage form, drivit or gypsum board outer wall parts exposed to fire showed combustion and carbonization to show calcination(breaking phenomenon) and influence of heat exposure was higher as calcination became more severe.

Hydrogen emphasis on safety management due to its high potential for accidents from wide explosive limits and low ignition energy. To prevent accidents, appropriate explosion-proof electrical equipment with installed to safe management of ignition sources. However, designing all facilities with explosion-proof structures can significantly increase costs and impose limitations. In this study, we optimize the barrier to effectively control the initial momentum in case of hydrogen release and form the control room as a non-hazardous area. We employed response surface method (RSM), the barrier distance, width and height of the barrier were set as variables. The Box-Behnken design method the selection of 15 cases, and FLACS assessed the presence of hazardous area. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) analysis resulting in an optimized barrier area. Through this methodology, the workplace can optimize the barrier according to the actual workplace conditions and classify reasonable hazardous area, which is believed to secure safety in hydrogen facilities and minimize economic burden.

The closed cycle diesel system is operated in closed circuit system where there is non air breathing with working fluid consisted of the combination of oxygen, argon and recycled exhaust gas for obtaining underwater or underground power sources. this study has been carried out to analysis the performance of closed cycle system by means of investigation on the combustion characteristics of diesel engine MTU8V183TE52 operating in open, semi-closed, and closed cycle modes. The combustion in closed mode starts a little bit earlier than in open cycle mode. The oxygen concentration and fuel consumption at 240kW closed cycle running are 21∼24% by volume and 77∼79kg/h, respectively. The maximum cylinder pressure and ignition delay time are investigated 110bar and 8.9degree. Also, The combustion simulation program has been studied to predict whether or not combustion. The results from numerical prediction for the basic, cylinder averaged quantities such as the cylinder pressure and the heat release showed excellent with the experimental data.
The Kyoto Protocol, that had been in force from February 16, 2005, requires significant reduction in $CO_2$ emissions for all anthropogenic sources containing transportation, industrial, commercial, and residential fields, etc, and automotive emission standards for air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides $(NO_x)$ become more and more tight for improving ambient air quality. This paper has briefly reviewed homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion technology offering dramatic reduction in $CO_2,\;NO_x$ and PM emissions, compared to conventional gasoline and diesel engine vehicles, in an effort of automotive industries and their related academic activities to comply with future fuel economy legislation, e.g., $CO_2$ emission standards and corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) in the respective European Union (EU) and United States of America (USA), and to meet very stringent future automotive emission standards, e.g., Tier 2 program in USA and EURO V in EU. In addition, major challenges to the widespread use of HCCI engines in road applications are discussed in aspects of new catalytic emissions controls to remove high CO and unburned hydrocarbons from such engine-equipped vehicles.
Exhaust gas emissions from internal combustion engines are one of the major sources of air pollution. And. it is extremely difficult to increase gasoline engine efficiency and to reduce NOx and PM(particulate matter) simultaneously in diesel combustion. This paper offers some basic concepts to overcome the above problems. To solve the problems, a recommended technique is CAI(controlled auto-ignition) combustion. In this paper. internal EGR(exhaust gas recirculation) effect is suggested to realize CAI combustion. An experimental study was carried out to achieve CAI combustion using homogeneous premixed gas mixture in the constant volume combustion chamber(CVCC). A flame trap was used to simulate internal EGR effect and to increase flame propagation speed in the CVCC. Flame propagation photos and pressure signals were acquired to verify internal EGR effect. Flame trap creates high speed burned gas jet. It achieves higher flame propagation speed due to the effect of geometry and burned gas jet.
