  • The use of the ammonia-water zeotropic mixture as a working fluid in the power generating system has been considered as a proven technology for efficient recovery of low-grade heat sources. This paper presents a thermodynamic performance analysis for ammonia-water evaporator using low-grade heat source, based on the exergy and entransy which has been recently introduced as a physical quantity to describe the heat transfer ability of an object. In the analysis, effects of the ammonia mass fraction and source temperature of the binary mixture are investigated on the system performance such as heat transfer, effectiveness, exergy destruction, entransy dissipation, and entransy dissipation based thermal resistance. The results show that the ammonia mass concentration and the source temperature have significant effects on the thermodynamic system performance of the ammonia-water evaporator.

  • Seismic piezocone penetration tests (SCPTu) can be used to obtain dynamic properties of soils as well as cone resistance and penetration pore pressure. However, the SCPTu system can be hardly utilized in marine soils because it is difficult to install the source apparatus which generates the shear wave in offshore site. The authors developed an inhole type piezocone penetration test (CPTu) equipment which both source and receiver composed of bender elements were installed inside the rod located behind the cone. Therefore, it can be applicable to even an offshore site without any additional source apparatus. The objective of this paper is to investigate the practical application of inhole type CPTu by performing laboratory model tests using kaolinite as soft clay. The shear wave velocities of kaolinite soil were measured with time, and the effects of soil disturbance due to the installation of source and receiver were also examined for various distance between source and receiver.

  • Clubroot disease is the major threat to the production of Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L.) in Japan. Although the breeding of the clubtoot resistant (CR) cultivars is one of the most efficient ways to control this disease, the CR cultivars do not always have effects due to the breakdown of resistance. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the breeding strategy to accumulate multiple CR genes in a single cultivar effectively. We have identified two incomplete dominant CR loci, Crr1 and Crr2, which are originated from the European CR turnip Siloga. To investigate the effectiveness of marker-assisted selection (MAS) for CR breeding, the inbred line with Crr1 and Crr2 was crossed with parental lines of the existing CR $F_1$ cultivar of Chinese cabbage, followed by 5 times of MAS and backcrossing. The $F_1$ derived from a cross between the resulting parental lines improved the clubroot resistance as expected and had the same morphological characters as the original $F_1$ cultivar. We have shown that the Crr1 locus comprised two loci: Crr1a, which by itself conferred resistance to the mild isolate; and Crr1b, which had a minor effect, but was not required for Crr1a-mediated resistance. Further genetic analysis suggested that Crr1b was necessary to acquire resistance to the more virulent isolate in combination with Crr2. Molecular characterization of Crr1a encoding TIR-NB-LRR class of R protein revealed that there were at least 4 alleles in Japanese CR cultivars of Chinese cabbage. PCR analysis with Crr1a-specific markers demonstrated that the functional alleles were predicted to be present in European CR turnips, Debra and 77b besides Siloga, whereas rarely in Japanese CR cultivars, indicating that Crr1a is an useful source to improve the resistance of Chinese cabbage cultivars.

  • This study evaluated the abundance and antimicrobial resistance of Escherichia coli in oysters Crassostrea gigas and major inland pollution sources sampled in 2014-2015 from Jaranman-Saryangdo on the southern coast of Korea. The ranges of the geometric mean of E. coli concentrations in oysters and major inland pollution sources were <20-29.8 MPN/100 g and 7.5-137.2 MPN/100 g, respectively. We isolated 247 strains of E. coli (28 from oysters and 247 from major inland pollution sources) and examined the antimicrobial resistance patterns of all isolates. Isolates from both sources were highly resistant to rifampin (99.5-100%) and cephalothin (70.8-78.6%). The resistance rate was higher in E. coli isolated from oysters those from inland pollution sources. Multiple resistance against at least four antimicrobials was observed in 85.7% and 21.0% of the oyster and major inland pollution sources isolates, respectively.

  • An active capacitance circuit which employs series feedback network for the implement of negative resistance and low noise operation is analyzed in depth and its application to low noise active RF BPF's is discussed. Whereas many authors reported a lot of circuits that embody negative resistance circuit most of them have concerns for the equivalent resistance and reactance value at the center frequency. In this case, it could be possible to face a problem that the negative resistance circuit becomes unstable, or have poor flatness in passband because of insufficient forecast for the negative resistance values as the frequency goes higher or lower. In this paper, we extracted the exact equivalent values of this circuit and analyzed the RF characteristics with the varying the values of active devices and feedback circuits and presented the method that the flatness of passband can be improved. We have designed a 4-pole active BPF, which has the bandwidth of 60 ㎒, 0.67 ㏈ insertion loss, 0.3 ㏈ ripple, and noise figure of 3.0 ㏈ at 1.99 ㎓ band.

  • To determine the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in fecal E. coli and to investigate possible associations between antibiotic resistance and other plasmid-mediated virulence properties, antibiotic disk susceptibility tests for nine antibiotics were done on 141 strains of E. coli isolated from diarrheal children and well controls. Eighty two percent of the test strains were resistant to one or more antibiotics. Antibiotics to which the test strains were most resistant in descending order were ampicillin (85%), trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazol (60%), and cephalothin (55%). Seventy nine percent of these resistant strains were resistant to two or more antibiotics. All 141 test strains were sorted into enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), enteroadherent E. coli (EAEC) and non-pathogenic E. coli and the percentages of strains resistant to multiple antibiotics were compared. Among ETEC regardless of its source, multiple drug resistance was more frequent in strains producing heatstable enterotoxin (ST) only than in strains producing only heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) or both. In EAEC, multiple resistance was more frequently associated with strains isolated from diarrheal patients than with those from well controls. The major antibiotic resistance patterns possessed by multiple resistant enteropathogenic strains were $SXT^R$ $AM^R$, $CR^R$, and $SXT^R$ $AM^R$ $CR^R$. Of 28 ST- producing $SXT^R$ ETEC, 26(96%) were also resistant to ampicillin and 17 (61%) were resistant to cephalothin. The similar pattern was observed in EAEC and EPEC as well. This study has important implications for the treatment of E. coli diarrhea with antibiotics because it is possible that dissemination of virulence could occur under the force of selective antibiotic pressure. In addition, this study suggests that the in vivo efficacy of SXT in treating diarrheal illness be reevaluated.

  • Cucumber fruit mottle mosaic tobamovirus (CFMMV) causes severe mosaic symptoms with yellow mottling on leaves and fruits, and occasionally severe wilting of cucumber plants. No genetic source of resistance against this virus has been identified. The genes coding for the coat protein or the putative 54-kDa replicase were cloned into binary vectors under control of the SVBV promoter. Agrobacterium-mediated transformation was peformed on cotyledon explants of a parthenocarpic cucumber cultivar with superior competence for transformation. R1 seedlings were evaluated for resistance to CFMMV infection by lack of symptom expression, back inoculation on an alternative host and ELISA. From a total of 14 replicase-containing R1 lines, 8 exhibited immunity, while only 3 resistant lines were found among a total of 9 CP-containing lines. Line 144 homozygous for the 54-kDa replicase was selected for further resistance analysis. Line 144 was immune to CFMMV infection by mechanical and graft inoculation, or by root infection following planting in CFMMV-contaminated soil. Additionally, line 144 showed delay of symptom appearance following infection by other cucurbit-infecting tobamoviruses. Infection of line 144 plants with various potyviruses and cucumber mosaic cucumovirus did not break the resistance to CFMMV. The mechanism of resistance of line 144 appears to be RNA-mediated, however the means is apparently different from the gene silencing phenomenon. Homozygote line 144 cucumber as rootstock demonstrated for the first time protection of a non-transformed scion from soil inoculation with a soil borne pathogen, CFMMV.

  • A 1,989-bp genomic region encoding nickel resistance genes was isolated from Legionella pneumophila, a pathogen for legionellosis. From a sequencing and computer analysis, the region was found to harbor two structural genes, a nreB-like protein gene (1,149 bp) and a nreA-like protein gene (270 bp), in a row. Both genes exhibited a significant degree of similarity to the corresponding genes from Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 ($54\%$ amino acid sequence identity) and Achromobacter xylosoxidans 31A ($76\%$). The gene was successfully expressed in E. coli MG1655 and conferred a nickel resistance of up to 5 mM in an LB medium and 3 mM in a TMS medium including gluconate as the sole carbon source. E. coli harboring the nickel resistance gene also exhibited a substantial resistance to cobalt, yet no resistance to cadmium or zinc. Since the extracellular concentration of nickel remained constant during the whole period of cultivation, it was confirmed that the nickel resistance was provided by an efflux system like the $Ni^2+$permease (nrsD) of Synechocystis sp. strain PCC6803. Since polyphosphate (poly-P) is known as a global regulator for gene expression as well as a potential virulence factor in E. coli, the nickel resistance of a ppk mutant of E. coli MG 1655 harboring the nickel resistance gene from L. pneumophila was compared with that of its parental strain. The nickel resistance was significantly attenuated by ppk inactivation, which was more pronounced in an LB medium than in a TMS medium.

  • Deep submicron NMOSFETs with elevated source/drain can be fabricated using self-aligned selective epitaxial growth(SEG) of silicon for enhanced device characteristics with shallow junction compared to conventional MOSFETs. Shallow junctions, especially with the heartily-doped S/D residing in the elevated layer, give hotter immunity to Yt roll off, drain-induced-barrier-lowering (DIBL), subthreshold swing (SS), punch-through, and hot carrier effects. In this paper, the characteristics of both deep submicron elevated source/drain NMOSFETs and conventional NMOSFETs were investigated by using TSUPREM-4 and MEDICI simulators, and then the results were compared. It was observed from the simulation results that deep submicron elevated S/D NMOSFETs having shallower junction depth resulted in reduced short channel effects, such as DIBL, SS, and hot carrier effects than conventional NMOSFETs. The saturation current, Idsat, of the elevated S/D NMOSFETs was higher than conventional NMOSFETs with identical device dimensions due to smaller sheet resistance in source/drain regions. However, the gate-to-drain capacitance increased in the elevated S/D MOSFETs compared with the conventional NMOSFETs because of increasing overlap area. Therefore, it is concluded that elevated S/D MOSFETs may result in better device characteristics including current drivability than conventional NMOSFETs, but there exists trade-off between device characteristics and fate-to-drain capacitance.
