  • The receptor modeling is one of the statistical methods to achieve reasonable air pollution strategies. The pur-pose of this study was to survey the concentration variability oi inorganic elements and ionic species in the PM-10 particles, to qualitatively characterize emission sources by an advanced algorithm called positive matrix factoriza-tion(PMF) as a receptor model that can strictly provide results in every loading matrix. A total of 254 samples was collected by a PM-10 high volume air sampler from Mar. 1997 to Feb. 1998 in Kyung Hee University at Suwon Campus. Fourteen chemical species(Zn, Cu, Fe, Pb, Al, Mn, $Na^{+}$, NH$_4$+, $K^{+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $SO_4^{2-}$, $NO_{3}^{-}$, and $Cl^{-}$) were determined by AAS and IC methods. The study results showed that the average monthly concentration of PM-10 particles were 86.3$\mu\textrm{g}$/$\textrm{m}^3$ in March (maximum) and 28.5$\mu\textrm{g}$/$\textrm{m}^3$ in August(minimum), respectively. The concentrations of Na+, NH$_4$+, $K^{+}$ and $Cl^{-}$ in winter, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $NO_{3}^{-}$, in spring, and $SO_4^{2-}$ in summer showed the largest peak concentration for the respective season. Through and app-lication of a PMF program of Pm-10 concentration data of Suwon, 9 sources were qualitatively identified , such as incineration source, oil burning source, soil related source, open burning source automobile source, coal burning sources, secondary sulfate related source, and secondary nitrate related source.

  • Diffraction systematically causes error in acoustic measurements. Most probes are designed to reduce this phenomenon. On the contrary, this paper proposes a spherical probe a] lowing acoustic inten sity measurements in three dimensions to be made, which creates a diffracted field that is well-defined, thanks to analytic solution of diffraction phenomena. Six microphones are distributed on the surface of the sphere along three rectangular axes. Its measurement technique is not based on finite difference approximation, as is the case for the ID probe but on the analytic solution of diffraction phenomena. In fact, the success of sound source identification depends on the inverse models used to estimate inverse diffraction phenomena, which has nonlinear properties. In this paper, we propose the concept of nonlinear inverse diffraction modeling using a neural network and the idea of 3 dimensional sound source identification with better performances. A number of computer simulations are carried out in order to demonstrate the diffraction phenomena under various angles. Simulations for the inverse modeling of diffraction phenomena have been successfully conducted in showing the superiority of the neural network.

  • This paper proposes a modeling of fuel cell which replaces dc source during simulation. Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert chemical energy in fuels into electrical energy. This system has high efficiency and heat, no environmental chemical pollutions and noise. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) are commonly used as a residential generator. These fuel cells have different electrical characteristics such as a low voltage and high current compared with solar cells. And there are different behaviors in the V-I curve in the temperature and pressure. Therefore, the modeling of fuel cell should consider wide voltage range and slow current response and the resulting electrical model is applied to boost converter with fuel cell as an input source.

  • An earthquake occurred on 17 November 2017 in Pohang, South Korea with a strength of 5.4 Mw. This is the second strongest earthquake recorded by local authorities since the equipment was first installed. In order to improve understanding of earthquakes and surface deformation, many studies have been conducted according to these phenomena. In this research, we will estimate the surface deformation using the Okada model equation. The SAR images of three satellites with different wavelengths (ALOS-2, Cosmo SkyMed and Sentinel-1) were used to produce the interferogram pairs. The interferogram is used as a reference for surface deformation changes by using Okada to determine the source of surface deformation that occurs during an earthquake. The Non-linear optimization (Levemberg-Marquadrt algorithm) and Monte Carlo restart was applied to optimize the fault parameter on modeling process. Based on the modeling results of each satellite data, the fault geometry is ~6 km length, ~2 km width and ~5 km depth. The root mean square error values in the surface deformation model results for Sentinel, CSK and ALOS are 0.37 cm, 0.79 cm and 1.47 cm, respectively. Furthermore, the results of this modeling can be used as learning material in understanding about seismic activity to minimize the impacts that arise in the future.

  • Recently, the population growth, industrial and agricultural development are rapidly undergoing in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) in Texas. The Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) composed of the 4 counties and three of them are interesting for Non-point and point source pollutant modeling: Starr, Cameron, and Hidalgo. Especially, the LRGV is an intensively irrigation region, and Texas A&M University Agriculture Program and the New Mexico State University College of Agriculture applied irrigation district program (Guy Fipps and Craig Pope, 1998), projects in GIS and Hydrology based agricultural water management systems and assessment of prioritized protecting stream network, water quality and rehabilitation based on water saving potential in Rio Grande River. In the LRGV region, where point and non-point sources of pollution may be a big concern, because increasing fertilizers and pesticides use and population cause. This project objective seeks to determine the accumulation of non-point and point source and discuss the main impacts of agriculture and environmental concern with water quality related to pesticides, fertilizer, and nutrients within LRGV region. The GIS technique is widely used and developed for the assessment of non-point source pollution in LRGV region. This project shows the losses in kg/$km^2$/year of BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand), TN (total Nitrogen) and TP (total phosphorus) in the runoff from the surface of LRGV.

  • In this paper, we report an analytical modeling and 2-D Synopsys Sentaurus TCAD simulation of ion implanted silicon carbide MESFETs. The model has been developed to obtain the threshold voltage, drain-source current, intrinsic parameters such as, gate capacitance, drain-source resistance and transconductance considering different fabrication parameters such as ion dose, ion energy, ion range and annealing effect parameters. The model is useful in determining the ion implantation fabrication parameters from the optimization of the active implanted channel thickness for different ion doses resulting in the desired pinch off voltage needed for high drain current and high breakdown voltage. The drain current of approximately 10 A obtained from the analytical model agrees well with that of the Synopsys Sentaurus TCAD simulation and the breakdown voltage approximately 85 V obtained from the TCAD simulation agrees well with published experimental results. The gate-to-source capacitance and gate-to-drain capacitance, drain-source resistance and trans-conductance were studied to understand the device frequency response. Cut off and maximum frequencies of approximately 10 GHz and 29 GHz respectively were obtained from Sentaurus TCAD and verified by the Smith's chart.

  • The objective of this study was to quantitatively estimate PM-10 source contribution in Gumi City, Korea. Ambient PM-10 samples were collected by a high volume air sampler, which operated for 84 different days with a 24-h sampling basis, from June 14,2001 though May 19, 2003. The filter samples were analyzed for determining 13 inorganic elements, 3 anions, and a total carbon. The study has intensively applied a receptor model, the PMF (Positive Matrix Factorization) model. The results from PMF modeling indicated that a total of seven sources were independently identified and each source was contributed to the ambient Gumi City from secondary sulfate (34%), motor vehicle (26%), soil relation (5%), field burning (3%), industrial relation (3%), secondary nitrate (22%), and incinration (7%) in terms of PM-10 mass, respectively.

  • The modeling on fire safety assessment for a tall and narrow atrium is carried out using a reduced and full scale atrium models based on the performances of flow behavior in and near comer fire and smoke ventilation system. The comer (or wall) effects on the flame behavior considering air entrainment into a flame was evaluated theoretically and experimentally. Temperature, upward velocity, inlet air velocity, and pressure difference between the atrium space and atmosphere were measured systematically in a reduced scale model. The performance of the modeling to estimate temperature rise and natural air ventilation volume was verified based on the experimental results. Smoke filling rate from a model fire source set at the center of a tall and narrow atrium is fastest in the other cases in which fire source set in or near a corner. This suggested that the centering of the fire source is acceptable as the fire source position to assess the fire safety design for a tall and narrow atrium.

  • Neutron transport calculations are extremely challenging due to the high computational cost of large and complex problems. A multilevel octree grid algorithm (MLTG) of discrete ordinates method was developed to improve the modeling accuracy and simulation efficiency on 3-D Cartesian grids. The Balakovo-3 VVER-1000 neutron dosimetry benchmark is calculated to verify and validate this numerical technique. A simplified S2 synthetic acceleration is used in the MLTG calculation method to improve the convergence of the source iterations. For the triangularly arranged fuel pins, we adopt a source projection algorithm to generate pin-by-pin source distributions of hexagonal assemblies. MLTG provides accurate geometric modeling and flexible fixed source description at a lower cost than traditional Cartesian grids. The total number of meshes is reduced to 1.9 million from the initial 9.5 million for the Balakovo-3 model. The numerical comparisons show that the MLTG results are in satisfactory agreement with the conventional SN method and experimental data, within the root-mean-square errors of about 4% and 10%, respectively. Compared to uniform fine meshing, approximately 70% of the computational cost can be saved using the MLTG algorithm for the Balakovo-3 computational model.
