Health monitoring is a major concern not only in the design and manufacturing but also in service stages for composite laminated structures. Excessive loads or low velocity impact can cause matrix cracks and delaminations that may severely degrade the load carrying capability of the composite laminated structures. To develop the health monitoring techniques providing on-line diagnostics of smart composite structures can be helpful in keeping the composite structures sound during their service. In this study, we discuss the signal processing techniques and some applications for health monitoring of composite structures using piezoceramic sensors and fiber optic sensors.
A geoacoustic modeling has been developed to predict sound transmission through the submarine layers of sediment and rock. It demands a geoacoustic model with the measured, extrapolated, and predicted values of geoacoustic parameters controlling acoustic propagation. In the coastal areas of Okgye and Bukpyeong, the East Sea, the marine succession consists of Quaternary/Tertiary deposits and acoustic basement. The basement of Okgye coastal area is indicative of siliciclastics of the Pyeongan Group in Paleozoic, and the average velocities of P-wave and S-wave are 4276 m/s and 2400 m/s, respectively. The basement of Bukpyeong coastal area is indicative of limestone of the Joseon Supergroup in early Paleozoic, and the average velocities of P-wave and S-wave are 5542 m/s and 2742 m/s, respectively.

Catastrophic fracture cannot be avoided after cracks(initiated from pre-existing defects) propagate rapidly with speeds comparable to a sound wave velocity of the materials. Preventing catastropic failure, crack arrest fracture toughness defined from dynamic(or kinetic) fracture mechanics point of view has been introduced in determining accurate and/or proper crack arrest fracture toughness of a material. For the past decades, many studies have been carried out to render proper theoretical and experimental backgrounds on the use of the static plain strain crack arrest fracture toughness, $K_{1a}$ (which seems to be a material property). $K_{1a}$ has been used to predict the performance of thick walled structures and has been considered as a measure of the ability of a material to stop a fast running crack. Determination of such a material property is of prime importance to the nuclear reactor pressure vessel and bridge materials industries. However, standards procedures for measuring toughness associated with fast running cracks are yet to exist. This study intends to give insight on the determination of the crack arrest fracture toughness of materials such as polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA), SM45C-steel, and A1 7075-T6. The effects of crack jump lengths and fast crack initiation stress intensity factor on the determination of $K_{1a}$ have been experimentally observed.erved.

The stability forecasting of rock slope is more difficult than soil slope because catching the sign of failure in monitoring is not easy and deformation of the rock is small in failure process. But in the rock slope, there is small deformation like crack propagation in rock itself and it accumulates gradually in failure process. If it is possible to detect the small change in the rock slope, we can know the failure time exactly. Because the individual signal is gathered in the acoustic emission monitoring, it is possible to monitoring the slope if many sound signal is accumulated. Detection test of acoustic emission was performed. Uniaxial, two types of bending test, and two plane shear test were done with various cement paste sample. Wave propagation velocity of uniaxial test sample was increased with curing time. Wave Analysis give us the result that there is a AE sign signal before the failure, the AE count is suddenly increased. And frequency level 125kHz before failure is changed to level 200-250kHz after failure. In two plane shear test we can catch the AE signal and can know the failure type from wave shape. Monitoring test site is tunnel slope in Hongcheon but special signal is not collected.

In the experimental study of $N_2$ purge cold flow test of impinging(FOOF) injector for determining of instability region, the whistling sound which has a specific frequency is generated. The frequency of whistling is proportional to the gas flow velocity in part of the oxidizer orifice and due to the coupling of the vibrating gas column and the natural frequency of pipe-orifice shape, the discontinuous jumping phenomena arises. The whistling phenomena have no effect on the combustion instability. Compared the damping factor of 1T1L mode with the hot fire test, the instability region of $N_2$ purge cold flow test is very much like that. It means that flow instability by impinging or mixing of jet is the main reason of combustion instability of impinging injector(FOOF) in the hot firing test.
Soils in the sloping uplands in Korea are subject to intensive land use with high input of agrochemicals and are vulnerable to soil erosion. Development of the environmentally sound land management strategy is essential for a sustainable production system in the sloping upland. This report addresses the status of upland agriculture and the best management practices for the uplands toward the sustainable agriculture. More than 60% of Korean lands are forest and only 21% are cultivating paddy and upland. Uplands are about 7% of the total lands and about 62% of the uplands are in the slopes higher than 7%. Due to the site-specificity of the upland, many managerial and environmental problems are occurring, such as severe erosion, shallow surface soils with rocky fragments, and loadings of non-point source (NPS) contaminants into the watershed. Based on the field trials, most of the sloping uplands were classified as Suitability Class III-V and the major limiting factor was slope and rock fragments. Due to this, soils were over-applied with N fertilizer, even though N rate was the recommendation. This resulted in decreases in yield, degradation of soil quality and increases in N loading to the leachate. Various case studies drew management practices toward sustainable production systems. The suggested BMP on the managerial, vegetative, and structural options were to practice buffer strips along the edges of fields and streams, winter cover crop, contour and mulching farming, detention weir, diversion drains, grassed waterway, and slope arrangement. With these options, conservation effects such as reductions in raindrop impact, flow velocity, runoff and sediment loss, and rill and gully erosion were observed. The proper management practice is a key element of the conservation of the soil and water in the sloping upland.

In this paper, we present a method for optical parameter-based material rendering with measuring the thickness of a material using ultrasonic waves. Thickness is an important element in determining the reflectance and transmittance of a material along with its optical characteristics and plays a crucial role in more realistic object rendering. In studies conducted thus far, thickness has been measured and used for rendering. The proposed method is a novel method attempted for the first time ever to render a material considering the thickness of a material whose thickness cannot be measured by visual assessment, using ultrasonic waves. It was implemented by measuring the sound velocity of the reference sample and applying the results to the thickness measurement of other objects that have the same characteristics. The characteristics of the objects measured are reflected in the quality of the final rendering, thus verifying the importance of thickness in rendering.
The recovery of waste proves a solution with two impacts: the environmental impact by the reduction of pollution and the gain of the occupied space by this waste, and the economic impact by the use of these lasts in the building and in the area of public works. The present research consists in recovering a waste marble (thrown powder exposed to the different meteorological phenomena) generated by the quarry marble of Fil-fila, located at the east side of Skikda in the north-east of Algeria, and add it, as sand in the composition of sand concrete. To carry out this research, we analyzed the evolution brought by the substitution of ordinary sand by marble waste sand, with 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% on the properties in the fresh state (density, workability and air content) and in the cured state (compressive strength, tensile strength, surface hardness and sound velocity). For durability we tested water absorption by immersion and chloride penetration. The results obtained are compared with control samples of 0% of substitution rate. In order to have a good filling of the voids in the granular skeleton; we added a quantity of limestone recycled fines from the quarries and for a good workability a super-plasticizing additive. The results showed that the partial substitution modified both the fresh and the hardened characteristics of the tested concretes, the durability parameters also improved.
Most fluid machines can be considered as periodic noise sources when operated under constant conditions, which allows for a frequency domain representation of the source and the associated acoustic field In the duct. In such a representation, the source is characterized by frequency-dependent values of both strength and impedance. Although knowledge of these values can be gained by either experimentation or by modeling, one-port acoustic characteristics of an in-duct source with high flow velocity, high temperature, and high sound level can be measured only by the multiload method using an overdetermined set of open pipes with different lengths as applied loads. However, the problem is that negative source resistances have been often measured. This paper reviews the possible causes of the problem, with reference to experimental and theoretical results, in an attempt to clarify the issue. A new interpretation is given for the violation of basic assumptions and the defect in the algorithm of multiload method. The major cause and mechanism of the problem is due to the violation of time invariance assumption of the source and the load impedance can seriously affect the final measured result of source impedance.

Pressure oscillation caused by the compressibility of entrapped air in dam break flow is analyzed using an open source code, which is a two-phase compressible code for non-isothermal immiscible fluids. Since compressible flows are computed based on a pressure-based method, the code can handle the equation of state of barotropic fluid, which is virtually incompressible. The computed time variation of pressure is compared with other experimental and computational results. The present result shows good agreements with other results until the air is entrapped. As the entrapped air bubbles pulsate, pressure oscillations are predicted and the pressure oscillations damp out quickly. Although the compressibility parameter of water has been varied for a wide range, it has no effects on the computed results, because the present equation of state for water is so close to that of incompressible fluid. Grid independency test for computed time variation of pressure shows that all results predict similar period of pressure oscillation and quick damping out of the oscillation, even though the amplitude of pressure oscillation is sensitive to the velocity field at the moment of the entrapping. It is observed that as pressure inside the entrapped air changes quickly, the pressure field in the neighboring water adjusts instantly, because the sound of speed is much higher in water. It is confirmed that the period of pressure oscillation is dominated by the added mass of neighboring water. It is found that the temperature oscillation of the entrapped air is critical to the quick damping out of the oscillations, due to the fact that the time averaged temperature inside the entrapped air is higher than that of surrounding water, which is almost constant.
