In order to investigate the effect of dimethyl ether (DME) on PAH and soot formation, the fuel has been mixed to the counter-flow diffusion flames of ethylene. Laser-induced incandescence and laser-induced fluorescence techniques were employed to measure relative concentrations of soot volume fraction and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentration, respectively. Results showed that even though pure DME flame produces the minimal amount of PAH and soot, the mixture fuel of DME and ethylene could increase PAH and soot formation, as compared to those of pure ethylene flame. This implies that even though DME has been known to be a clean fuel for soot formation, the mixture fuel of DME and the hydrocarbon fuel could produce enhanced production of soot. Numerical simulation demonstrated that methyl (CH$_{3}$) radical generated by the initial pyrolysis of DME can be contributed to the enhancement of PAH and soot formation, through the formation of propargyl (C$_{3}$H$_{3}$) radical.

The measurements of monochromatic line-of-sight flame emission and light transmission in the same path having small spatial resolution were performed in an axisymmetric laminar propane $C_{3}H_{8}$ diffusion flame. The light wavelengthes of 632 nm, 800nm, 900nm were used. From these measurements, local point soot radiances (by Kirchhoff's law) and absorption coefficients were reconstructed by tomography. Thus local point soot temperatures and concentrations were obtained. The reconstructed soot temperatures and concentrations of local points have no differences between the case of visible range (632 nm) and the case of infrared range (800 nm and 900 nm). In these ranges, the scattering coefficient is much lower than the absorption coefficient. Soot mean temperature over the path also matches well with local soot temperature in outer region of the flame. Temperature measurement by thermocouple with different bead diameters $(222{\mu}m and 308{\mu}m)$ was carried in the same flame. Rapid insertion technique was used and radiation effect was considered. Radiation correction in the sooting region was carried out and the corrected result was in good agreement with the local soot temperature.

Sooting characteristics of counterflow ethylene/propane mixture flames have been experimentally studied to investigate the fuel structure effect on PHM and soot formation. Laser-induced incandescene and laser-induced fluorescene techniques were employed to measure soot volume fraction and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentration, respectively. Importance of $C_{3-}$species on PAH growth as well as the H-abstraction-C$_2$$H_2$addition (HACA) mechanism has been emphasized, considering that PAH growth rate is greater for with mixed fuel than fer pure fuel flames. It was also confirmed that HACA pathways are the dominant soot growth mechanism. A new PAH growth model including both $C_{2-}$ and $C_{3-}$growth mechanisms is proposed based on the experimental results.
The effect of temperature distributions on soot volume fraction in double-concentric diffusion flames have been investigated experimentally. Using fine thermocouple wires and a rapid insertion mechanism, we have measured temperature without the effect of soot particles attached to the thermocouple junction, which can lower the temperature signal about 100 K by increasing the heat loss from the junction by radiation. The temperature at the flame axis is higher in the double-concentric diffusion flames than in normal co-flow diffusion flames because of the inverse diffusion flame. However, it is almost the same as that at the periphery of normal flames, on which the inverse flame does not have an effect. Thus, the lower soot concentration found in the double-concentric diffusion flame can be explained by the effect of nitrogen diffusion from the central air jet.
The effect of non-thermal plasma on diffusion flames in co-flow jets has been studied experimentally by adopting a dielectric barrier discharge technique. The generation of streamers was enhanced with a flame due to increased reduced electric fields by high temperature burnt gas and the abundance of ions in the flame region. The effect of streamers on flame behavior reveals that the flame length was significantly decreased as the applied voltage increased and the yellow luminosity by the radiation of soot particles was also significantly reduced. The formation of PAH and soot was influenced appreciably by the non-thermal plasma, while the flame temperature and the concentration of major species were not influence much with the plasma generation. The results demonstrated that the application of non-thermal plasma can be a viable technique in controlling soot generation in flames with low power consumption in the order of 1 W.
In order to investigate the effect of fuel mixing on PAH and soot formation, four species of methane, ethane, propane and propene have been mixed in counterlfow ethylene diffusion flame. Laser-induced incandescene and laser-induced fluorescene techniques were employed to measure soot volume fraction and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentration, respectively. Results showed that the mixing of ethane (or propane) in ethylene diffusion flame produces more PAHs and soot than those of propene. Considering that propene directly dehydrogenates to propargyl radical, this behavior implied that the enhancement of PAH and soot formation by the fuel mixing of ethylene and ethane (or propane) cannot be explained solely by propargyl radical directly dehydrogenated from ethane (or propane). Thus, combination reactions between C1 and C2-species for the formation of propargyl was suggested to identify the synergistic effect occurring in the flames of ethylene and propane (or ethane) mixtures.

The effect of a wall temperature on the soot deposition process from a diffusion flame to a solid wall was investigated in a microgravity environment to attain in-situ observations of the process. The fuel for the flames was an ethylene ($C_2H_4$). The surrounding oxygen concentration was 35% with surrounding air temperatures of $T_a=600K$. In the study, three different wall temperatures. $T_w$=300, 600, 800K, were selected as major test conditions. Laser extinction was adopted to determine the soot volume fraction distribution between the flame and burner wall. The experimental results showed that the maximum soot volume fractions at $T_w$=300, 800 K were $8.8{\times}10^{-6},\;9.2{\times}10^{-6}$, respectively. However, amount of soot deposition on wall surface was decreased because of lower temperature gradient near the wall with increasing wall temperature. A numerical simulation was also performed to understand the motion of soot particles in the flame and the characteristics of the soot deposition to the wall. The results from the numerical simulation successfully predicted the differences in the motion of soot particles by different wall temperature near the burner surface and are in good agreement with observed soot behavior that is, the 'soot line', in microgravity.

Experiments at the Japan Microgravity Center (JAMIC) have investigated the interaction between diffusion flames and solid surfaces Placed neat flames The fuel for the flames was $C_{2} H_{4}$ The surrounding oxygen concentration was 35$\%$ with surrounding air temperatures of $T_{a}$ : 300K. Especially, the effect of wall temperature on soot deposition from a diffusion flame Placed near the wall has been studied by utilizing microgravity environment, which can attain very stable flame along the wall. Cylindrical burner with fuel injection was adopted to obtain two dimensional soot distributions by laser extinction method. In the experiment two different wall temperatures. $T_{w}$=300, 800 K, were selected as test conditions The results showed that the soot distribution between flame and burner wall was strong1y affected by the wall temperature and soot deposition increases with decrease in wall temperature. The comparison among the values lot two different wall temperatures suggests that the change in thermophoretic effect is the most dominant factor to give the change in soot deposition characteristics.
The influence of N2 addition on soot formation, flame temperature and NOx emissions is investigated experimentally with methane fuel co-flow diffusion flames. The motivation of the present investigation is the differences in NOx reduction reported between fuel-side and oxidizer-side introduction of N2. To determine the influence of dilution alone, fuel was diluted with nitrogen while keeping the adiabatic flame temperature fixed by changing the temperature of the reactants. And to see the thermal effect only, air was supplied at different temperature without N2 addition. N2 addition into fuel side suppressed the soot formation than the case of oxidizer-side, while flame temperature enhanced the soot formation almost linearly. These results reveals the relative influences of the thermal, concentration effects of N2 additives on soot formation In accordance with experimental study, numerical simulation using CHEMKIN code was carried out to compare the temperature results with those acquired by CARS measurement, and we could find that there is good agreement between those results. Emission test revealed that NOx emissions were affected by not only flame temperature but also N2 addition.

The characteristics of $NO-NO_2$ conversion and soot oxidation by corona discharge are investigated experimentally. The discharge current decreases with the increase of oxygen concentration and it increases more sharply for anode corona than for cathode corona as discharge voltage increases after corona onset voltage. $NO-NO_2$ conversion increases with the energy density of corona discharge and the addition of $O_2$ in a base $N_2$ gas. Soot oxidation occurs at approximately $480^{\circ}C$ in a mixture of 21% $O_2$, base $N_2$ gas, and enhances as temperature increases. The initiation temperature of soot oxidation advances greatly to about $280^{\circ}C$ with the addition of 300ppm $NO_2$, which is generated from the conversion of NO to $NO_2$ by corona discharge. CO is generated at higher temperature by about $50{\sim}100^{\circ}C$ than $CO_2$ in the process of soot oxidation.
