Various approaches to process active sonar signals are under study, but there are many problems to be considered. The sonar signals are distorted by the underwater environment, and the spatio-temporal and spectral characteristics of active sonar signals change in accordance with the aspect of the target even though they come from the same one. And it has difficulties in collecting actual underwater data. In this paper, we synthesized active target echoes based on ray tracing algorithm using target model having 3-dimensional highlight distribution. Then, Fractional Fourier transform was applied to synthesized target echoes to extract feature vector. Recognition experiment was performed using probabilistic neural network classifier.

This paper describes a new speckle noise reduction methode on the sonar image using TVG Filtering and PDF wavelet transform. The speckle noise makes the degrading image to discriminate the various object on the ocean bed. The TVG filter removes the speckle noise by gain with observing the results timely and inductively. The experimental result is that speckle noise is reduced to 90 %. Thus the proposed technique leads the mage recognition to be enhanced in the submarine environment.

This paper conducts a study on methods for associating multipath tracks received by a horizontal line array sonar. The horizontal line array sonar introduces conical bearing ambiguities due to its array-shaped characteristics. Target signals are often subject to multipath propagation in the ocean, resulting in errors in target bearing estimation due to these bearing ambiguities. Recent research efforts have been directed toward using multipath tracks to estimate the positions of targets. However, there has been a lack of research dedicated to identifying multipath tracks from the measurements of a horizontal line array sonar. Therefore, this study identifies the conical bearing characteristics of multipath signals based on the result of experiment and establishes criteria for associating multipath tracks. Additionally, Simulations are performed to determine the ability to associate multipath tracks.

The response behavior of a fish school to an approaching vessel was observed using scanning sonar. The evaluation using six parameters, which signify characteristics of school shape and behavior by sonar image processing, was proposed. Ten fish schools were analyzed and among them, three fish schools were identified for their changing shape, swimming direction, and swimming speed. Moreover, by tracing fish schools on stack of sonar images, these fish schools were seen to exhibit an apparent change of school shape and behavior. Therefore, the evaluation method of fish school behavior using six characteristic parameters indicating fish school shape and behavior by sonar image processing is useful.

A high power deep-water sonar transducer of FFR (Free Flooded Ring) type has been designed using a coupled FE-BEM. The present sonar transducer is composed of rectangular piezoelectric ceramics and pie-shaped steels (or the advantage of simple fabrication. The dynamics of the sonar transducer is modelled in three dimensions and is analyzed with external electrical excitation conditions. Different results are available such as steady-state frequency response for TX and RX displacement modes, directivity patterns, back-scattering patterns, bandwidths, transmitting voltage responses and receiving sensitivity responses. The TV response shows a very high acoustic pressure of 150 dB/lV (ref $1{\mu}Pa$ at 1m) at 1900 Hz. This ultra high power response of the sonar transducer indicates a new possibility of the sonar transducer development.

When a mobile robot moves around autonomously without man-made corrupted bye landmarks, it is essential to recognize the placement of surrounding objects especially for self localization, obstacle avoidance, and target classification and localization. To recognize the environment we use many Kinds of sensors, such as ultrasonic sensors, laser range finder, CCD camera, and so on. Among the sensors, ultra sonic sensors(sonar)are unexpensive and easy to use. In this paper, we analyze the sonar data and propose a method to recognize features of indoor environment. It is supposed that the environments are consisted of features of planes, edges, and corners, For the analysis, sonar data of plane, edge, and corner are accumulated for several given ranges. The data are filtered to eliminate some noise using the Kalman filter algorithm. Then, the data for each feature are compared each other to extract the character is ties of each feature. We demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method using the sonar data obtained form a sonar transducer rotating and scanning the range information around a indoor environment.

A piezoelectric flextentional sonar transducer has been simulated using a coupled FE-BEM. The dynamics of the sonar transducer is modelled in three dimensions and is analyzed with external electrical excitation conditions. Different results are available such as steady-state displacement modes, underwater directivity patterns, resonant frequencies, bandwidths, quality factors, output acoustic powers and transmitting voltage responses. It is shown that the present barrel-stave sonar transducer of the piezoelectric material produces flextentional displacements which could be related with higher output power, lower quality factor and more omnidirectional beam pattern than other types of sonar transducers. The results of the present sonar transducer modelling are also compared with those of a commercial package such as ATILA.

Many studies about generating images of seabed using active sonar have been carried out but image resolution enhancement is still an important problem. Many methods have been proposed to improve sonar resolution and the approach using narrow beam width is commonly and widely applied to enhance azimuth resolution. Unfortunately, this has technical limitations to reduce the beam width. Therefore, signal processing techniques are essential to achieving higher azimuth resolution when an array with conventional beam width is employed. This paper proposes a new approach that utilizes overlapped beams to obtain higher resolution.
In active sonar system, clutters degrade performance of target detection/tracking and overwhelm sonar operators in ASW (Antisubmarine Warfare). Conventional clutter reduction algorithms using consistency of local peaks are studied in multi-ping data and tracking filter research for active sonar was conducted. However these algorithms cannot classify target and clutters in single ping data. This paper suggests a single ping clutter reduction approach to reduce clutters in mid-frequency active sonar system using echo shape features. The algorithm performance test is conducted using real sea-trial data in heavy clutter density environment. It is confirmed that the number of clutters was reduced by about 80 % over the conventional algorithm while retaining the detection of target.

HMS(Hull Mount Sonar) equipment mounted on PCC(Patrol Combat Corvette) is suitably designed for active mode, and the specific character of sensor or system is not appropriate for the frequency range to detect a torpedo. In this article, in order to implement the function of detecting torpedoes with HMS of existing PCC, I will analyze the feature of input signals each PCCs and design a circuit to compensate reversly for the input signal in certain frequency. And also, I will suggest the most adequate torpedo defense system suitable for the special operating environment and the charateristic of naval vessels, implementing functions such as AGC of input signal and fixing the frequency range of different input signals per different warships.
