  • Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are now broadly understood as a new kind of ionic liquid (IL) because they exhibit many characteristics and properties similar with ILs. The DESs made of quaternary ammonium salt blended with one of hydrogen bonding donor (HBD) compounds behave as ILs even at very low temperature. In this study, properties such as density, viscosity, surface tension, conductivity, and electrochemical behavior of DESs were reported and their applications were reviewed. Study on DESs has been drawn attention on application in metal finishing, but these solvents can be used in a variety of synthesis, and their potentials have been demonstrated in various areas. DESs are expected to offer applicability by extending the types of salts and hydrogen bond donor mixtures.

  • The mechanical degradation of $poly(\alpha-methyl$ styrene) in several mixed solvents (chlorobenzene-n-butyl alcohol, chlorobenzene-sec-butyl alcohol, chlorobenzene-Kerosene, chlorobenzene-methylketone) was studied using the capillary flow method. The velocity constant of scission reaction (K) and the limited degree of polymerization (g) were compared at the same value of [${\eta}$], which is considered as the parameter of molecular dimension of polymers in solution. As results, (K) did not change much, even if the species and the volume fraction of poor(non-) solvents changed, while the value of (g) changed according to the species of poor (non-) solvents and the value of [${\eta}$] these results were discussed.

  • The hexanuclear metallamacrocycles were observed repeatedly in various conditions including the presence of several different tricationic metal ions in the macrocyclic ring system and of the linear alkyl chains at the acyl site of N-acylsalicylhydrazide ligand, which contrasts to the formation of the decanuclear metallamacrocycle with bulkier side chains such as phenyl group at the acyl site of the ligand. We synthesized a series of metallamacrocycles in various solvents to find the relationship between the solvents and the nuclearity of the metallamacrocycles. Whether the solvents are sterically more demanding or not, the complexes formed kept the hexanuclear metallamacrocycle system.

  • The relationship between porous surfaces and photoluminescence (PL) behavior of porous silicon carbide (PSC) in various solvents has been studied. The porous surfaces of p-type silicon carbide can be fabricated by electrochemical anodization from the 6H, 15R, 4H-${\alpha}$-SiC substrates in dark-current mode (DCM) condition. We have been investigated the dependence of the PL spectra of PSC under the medium having the different dielectric constants. It has been found that PL depends sensitively on the environment surrounding the surface. The extent of chemically stability on the surface of PSC due to the various solvents was confirmed by reflectance Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Detailed IR experiments on the PSC samples were carried out before and after various solvents immersion. These results will be offered important information on the origin of PL in porous structure.

  • A new approach for groundwater treatment combines a permeable Fe(0) barrier to breakdown higher chlorinated solvents like PCE and TCE with a downgradient aerobic biological treatment system to biotransform less chlorinated solvents, such as DCE and vinyl chloride (VC). The expected bacterial performance downgradient of an Fe(0) barrier was evaluated through laboratory batch experiments with a toluene-degrading mixed culture that cometabolically transforms cis-1,2-DCE and VC. The amount of cis-1,2-DCE (initially at 2,000 ppb) and VC (initially at 2,000 ppb) transformed was controlled by the initial toluene (20,000 ppb) concentration. VC was removed much more effectively than Cis-1,2-DCE, and a higher toluene concentration in comparison to the co-substrate concentrations was needed for complete co-substrate removal. Overall, the coupling of an Fe(0) barrier and subsequent biodegradation appears feasible for remediation of complex mixtures of chlorinated solvents and petroleum hydrocarbons in groundwater

  • This study showed that the optimized cleaning process using non-aqueous cleaning solvents is adaptable in the industrial field for existing 1.1.1-TCE cleaning solvents which is an ozone depleting sustance. Alternative cleaning solvent system substituted for existing cleaning solvent against non-aqueous pollutants(cutting & flux oil), was evaluated for the cleaning efficiency using gravimetric analysis method and surface change of sample by Image analyzer. The results showed that alternative solvents and process had excellent cleaning efficiency.

  • The symmetric benzoxazolo carbocyanine is of industrial importance as green-sensitizing dye in the spectral sensitization of emulsion microcrystals in positive paper and negative film-making. The stability on the solvents of benzoxazolo carbocyanine dye was measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and then all of solvents were stabilized sensitizer. The maximum absorption peak range in methanol, acetonitrile, acetone, DMF, dichloromethane, chloroform solvents was $501nm{\sim}511nm$. But it was identified that only methanol can be used to photographic emulsion. The photographic characteristics have contrast of 2.8, speed of 50-55$(lux{\cdot}sec)^{-1}$, fog of 0.07-0.08, respectively.

  • The kinetics of phenylmethanesulfonyl chloride in methanol-water, ethanol-water, acetone-water and acetonitrile-water has been investigated. The rate was faster in protic solvents than in aprotic solvents while susceptibility of rate to the ionizing power, i. e., m of the Winstein plot and solvation number of the transition state were much smaller in protic solvents. This was considered in the light of initial state stabilization by hydrogen-bonding solvation of the protic solvents. It was concluded that the reaction proceeds by an $S_N2$ mechanism in which bond-formation precedes bond-breaking at the transition state in all solvent systems.

  • As a non-aqueous dyeing method, organic solvent dyeing was discussed, The dye uptakes on PET and the solubilities of C. I. Disperse Violet 1 in 24 kinds of organic solvents including water were investigated, and the partition coefficients in PET- solvents system were also obtained from their isotherms. Contrary to in the other solvents, the dye uptake of C. I. Disperse Violet 1 on PET in hexane was even much higher, and also considerable in cyclohexane. The logarithmic plot of the dye uptakes versus the solubilities showed that the dye uptakes are linear and inversely proportional to the solubilities. The effect of $T_g$ decrease of PET in organic solvents to dye uptake seems to be very small relative to the effect of solubility, and so negligible.

  • This study was investigated to evaluate worker exposures to organic solvents by type of print industry. Results were as follows; 1. Workers were exposed to mixture of toluene, isopropyl alcohol(IPA), methyl ethyl ketone(MEK), n-hexane, ethylacetate(EA), acetone. The components of high exposure solvents were toluene, IPA and MEK. 2. Considering additive effects of the compounds, exposure indices(Em) were calculated. The Mean of exposure indices were 1.79 for Gravere, 0.41 for Screen and 0.14 for Opset workplace. The workers of Gravere workplace were estimated to overexpose for solvents. 3. The highest overexposed solvent was toluene for a single component. The rate of overexposed level for toluene was 7.41% for some print workplace and for mixed solvent was 1.85%. 4. Local exhaust systems were inappropriate and respiratory protective devices were not supplied to the workers. 5. Sound level was over 90dB(A) in Opset print workplace and some measures should be performed to get down the sound level.
