  • Synergistic effects of mixed solvents, especially with mixtures of CS$_2$ with electron donor solvents, in inducing desired structural changes in coals were studied by solvent swelling techniques in addition to differential scanning calorimetric analyses. Mixed solvents exhibit significant synergistic efficacy in swelling the coal structure of medium bituminous rank. This synergy effect appears to be physical origin that is closely related to matching solubility parameters. Since the swollen coal structure can be obtained by mixed solvents with CS$_2$ at room temperature instead of high temperature, many possible technological pathways for economical utilization of coal might be sought.

  • Intramolecular energy migration in a cyclic porphyrin array is spontaneous transfer of energy from one excited site to another. Since the efficiency of energy migration is inversely proportional to distance, the energy migration is occurred on their adjacent sites more often than distant ones. Therefore, the energy migration in the cyclic porphyrin array is largely dependent on their conformational characters. However, evaluation of conformational information by means of experimental tools is ambiguous since their limited resolution. In this work, we calculate the internal angle and distance distributions of cyclic porphyrin arrays using molecular dynamics simulations to obtain conformational information. To evaluate the angle and distance distributions respect to molecular size, we constructed molecules with n porphyrin dimers (n=1,3,7) in implicit solvent environment. Performing molecular dynamics simulations, we modulated alkyl groups to investigate additional conformational effects of the system.

  • Various amines (Triethylamine, Diethylamine, Dimethylaniline, Pyridine and Diphenylamine) and electron acceptors (Carbontetrachloride, iodine monochloride and iodine) were reacted in the hexane solvent system to form a charge transfer complex in each case. The tendency of forming a charge transfer complex by these electron acceptors was proportional to the basicity of amines and the different type of complex was formed as the polarity of electron donor had markedly changed, which were identified by ultraviolet spectrophotometry. A correlation between the formation of complex and the basicity of amine and the polarity of electron acceptor was discussed.

  • "Astragalus Membranaceus Bunge", which is a medical herb, grows wild in Manchuria and Korea, is cultivated today in Korea. Any literature about the organic components of "Astragalus Membranaceus Bunge" has been extracted with methanol referring to a literature of "Panax Ginseng C.A. Meyer" and two kinds of colorless crystals were obtained. After recrystallization in absolute alcohol, the melting point has been measured. The one kind was $181-182^{\circ}C$ and the others, $184-186{\circ}C$ respectively. It does not contain nitrogen, sulfur and halogen. By Liebermann's reaction, the one kind was not a carbohydrate but might be a Saponin. Through paper chromatography, taste, melting point, spectrophotometry, and elemental analysis, it was concluded that the other was Sucrose. It has been notified that the compound can be crystallized at the proper temperature, purity, and concentration of the solution and also solvent system.

  • Radioactive organic wastes containing acetone, alcohol, and particularly tributyl phosphate (TBP)/dodecane contaminated with uranium are extracted from the PUREX process and the decontamination of related equipment. An evaporation method that utilizes existing DU oxidation apparatuses and ventilation systems and a typical muffle furnace installed with an aspirating system are adopted. A separation method using phosphoric acid especially for the TBP/dodecane waste is also studied and evaluated. The results show that a simple evaporation process is utilizable for wastes containing acetone or alcohol with a lower boiling point. A modified muffle furnace is more appropriate to dispose directly of organic wastes having a higher boiling point, such as TBP/dodecane, without generating a condensed waste solution. It is recommended that, when the uranium concentration of TBP/dodecane waste is much higher than stipulated levels, separation technology should be applied to remove uranium from the mixture. Each type of solvent after separation can then be considered disposable below the regulatory limit in the modified furnace discussed in this study.

  • We report here the use of high-speed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC) in the preparative isolation and purification of the bioactive component, fucosterol, from Pelvetia siliquosa. A crude extract was obtained by ultrasonic extraction of powdered P. siliquosa using methylene chloride and was then subjected to separation and purification by HSCCC, coupled with evaporative light-scattering detection. Preparative HSCCC was performed successfully using a two-phase solvent system, n-heptane:methanol (3:2, v/v), to obtain 10.96 mg fucosterol with 96.8% purity from 50 mg of crude extract; the recovery rate was approximately 90.5%.

  • Water-based systems are dominating the coating market because of worldwide VOCs regulations. Research is focusing especially on waterborne polyurethane (WPU) because of its unique mechanical and chemical properties. However, commercial WPU consists of linear thermoplastic polymers with polar groups on the main chain, which do not perform as well as solvent-borne PU in a two-pack system. In this study, APTES were used as a chain crosslink agent to overcome commercial WPU's limited performance. WPUs synthesized by using a sol-gel process were evaluated with FT-IR, particle analysis, TGA, tensile tests, pull-off tests, SEM, and EIS. The results showed that WPUs with added APTES had better thermal stability, mechanical properties, and water resistance than did WPUs without added APTES. Consequently, the sol-gel process increased the crosslink density of WPUs and modified the WPU's own properties.

  • Solubilities of oleanolic acid and ursolic acid in aqueous surfactant solutions, liquid polyethylene glycols (PEG), and solvents of various polarity were measured. The results showed that the solutes were slightly or moderately solubilized in the surfactant solutions and the liquid PEGS. It was also revealed that the solutes were slightly soluble in the solvent of either extreme polarity or nonpolarity, but moderately soluble in solvents of intermediate polarity of which solubility parameters are around 10. The solubility parameters of these solutes were calculated from the group contribution to be 10.2 for both of them. Of the solvents tested, tetramethylurea was exceptionally effective in solubilizing the solutes. The solutes were also moderately soluble in the aqueous cosolvents containing tetramethylurea. This suggests that the mixed systems of tetramethylurea could be employed for the solubilization in the formulation of these compounds as an aqueous system.

  • The benzylic bromination of methoxyimino-o-tolyl-acetic acid methyl ester (1) into (2-bromomethyl-phenyl)-methoxyimino-acetic acid methyl ester (2) using N-bromosuccinimide in the presence of 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile in various reaction solvents were investigated. The efficiency of the reaction was found to be sensitive to the kind of reaction solvents. We found the benzylic bromination of 1 to 2 can be performed in 1,2-dichlorobenzene as reaction solvent superior to the classic Wohl-Ziegler procedure in both reaction time and isolated yield (8 h vs 12 h, 92 vs 79%). This system provides clean, rapid, and high-yielding reactions with replacement of conventional solvents, such as tetrachloromethane, by less-toxic 1,2-dichlorobenzene.

  • Lecithin-free egg yolk protein (EYP), the by-product of lecithin extraction from egg yolk, which is denatured with an organic solvent, would normally be discarded. In this study, the denatured protein was renatured with alkali, and hydrolyzed with Alcalase in order to utilize by-product. The hydrolysate was separated through a series of ultrafiltration membranes with molecular weight cut-off (MWOO) of 10, 5 and 1 kDa, and the antioxidative activities of the hydrolysates was investigated. The 5K hydrolysate, permeate from 5 kDa membrane, showed stronger antioxidative activity than 10 K and 1 K hydrolysate which were permeated from 10 kDa and 1 kDa membrane, in a linoleic acid autoxidation system. In addition, the optimum concentration of antioxidative activity for 5 K hydrolysate was 1%, and the activity was about 37% higher as compared with α-tocopherol. The synergistic effect was also increased by using the hydrolysates with α-tocopherol.
