  • Mg and its alloys have been of great interest because of their low density of 1.7, 30% lighter than Al, but their wide applications have been limited because of their poor resistances against corrosion and/or abrasion. Corrosion resistance of Mg alloys can be improved by formation of anodic films using anodic oxidation method in aqueous electrolytes. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is one of anodic oxidation methods by which hard anodic films can be formed as a result of micro-arc generation under high electric field. PEO method utilize not only substrate elements but also chemical components in electrolytes to form anodic films on Mg alloys. PEO films formed on AM50 magnesium alloy in an acidic fluozirconate electrolyte were observed to consist of mainly $ZrO_2$ and $MgF_2$. Liu et al reported that PEO coating on AM30 Mg alloy consists of $MgF_2$-rich outer porous layer and an MgO-rich dense inner layer. PEO films prepared on ACM522 Mg die-casting alloy in an aqueous phosphate solution were also reported to be composed of monoclinic $Mg_3(PO_4)_2$. $CeO_2$-incorporated PEO coatings were also reported to be formed on AZ31 Mg alloys in $CeO_2$ particle-containing $Na_2SiO_3$-based electrolytes. Magnesium tin hydroxide ($MgSn(OH)_6$) was also produced on AZ91D alloy by PEO process in stannate-containing electrolyte. Effects of $OH^-$, $F^-$, $PO{_4}^{3-}$ and $SiO{_3}^{2-}$ ions and alloying elements of Al and Sn on the formation of PEO films on pure Mg and Mg alloys and their protective properties against corrosion have been investigated in this work. $PO{_4}^{3-}$, $F^-$ and $SiO{_3}^{2-}$ ions were observed to contribute to the formation of PEO films but $OH^-$ ions were found to break down the surface films under high electric field. The effect of pulse current on the formation of PEO films will be also reported.

  • Polymeric membranes consisting of poly(d,1-lactide) as a polymer matrix and crystallizable progesterone as a drug were prepared by coagulating polymeric solutions. The homogeneous casting solutions in dimethyformamide were solidified by using three different coagulating processes : solvent evaporation under vacuum, solvent extraction via immersion into the nonsolvent bath, or vapor exposure at high humidity condition. With solvent removal via evaporation under vacuum, the cast solution film was vitrified to form a homogeneous film containing progesterone of spherical shape distributed evenly in the film. Being prepared by solvent extraction via immersion into a water bath, the resulting membrane showed an asymmetric structure, with progesterone of big crystallites distributed unevenly in the structure. On the other hand, the coagulation under high humidity transformed the cast film into a sponge-like structure, where progesterone took a shape like flake.

  • The tensile properties and color of fish meal film under various processing conditions were measured to obtain basic data for biodegradable Alaska Pollack meal protein isolate (APMPI) film. The tensile strength and the elongation of APMPI film were increased with casting volume of APMPI solution but those of APMPI film were weakened with the addition of glycerol amount as well as reduction of pH values. In case of adding various plasticizer, the tensile strength of film was increased in order as follows: sorbitol, polyethylene glycol and glycerol. The elongation was increased in order of polyethylene glycol, sorbitol and glycerol. The tensile strength of film increased with increment of APMPI concentration, but the elongation of film was not affected by APMPI concentration. The tensile strength of APMPI film was decreased with the increment of relative humidity but its elongation was increased with the increment of relative humidity, Not only lightness and yellowness of film added with sorbitol but also redness and total different color of film added with polyethylene glycol showed the highest value in Hunter color system.

  • Ion exchange metal composite(IPMC) has toughness equivalent to the range of human's muscle, transformation-actuation force by relatively low voltage and the fast response time. Thus, as a new method for preparing thicker IPMC, the solution casting method to make the films of various thicknesses out of liquid nation was attempted in this study. To reduce the surface resistance of electrode, the first plated electrode prepared by Oguro method was replated with Au and Ir using ion beam assisted deposition(IBAD). The microstructures of electrode surfaces before and after IBAD plating were investigated using SEM. The change of water and ion-conductivity in IPMC were measured under applied voltage. The displacement and driving force of IPMCs with various thicknesses were measured to evaluate the driving properties.

  • The plan for obtaining a good combination of strength and castability appeared feasible and the following observations were made. 1. In Al-12Mg-6.6Zn-xSi alloys, more primary $Mg_2Si$ phase formed with reduced $Al_3Mg_2$ phase, as Si content is necessary for an effective solution heat treatment because the solidus temperature is very low silicon contents. 2. A high tensile strength could be obtained in the heat-treated Al-12Mg-5.5Zn-5Si alloy attributed in the heat-treated Al-12Mg-5.5Zn-5Si alloy attributes to fine $MgZn_2$ particles that precipitated uniformly in the matrix. 3. Al-12Mg-5.5Zn-Si alloys showed excellent casting capabilities such as hot cracking resistance and fluidity compared to the reference commercial alloys. 4. The wear resistance of Al-12Mg-5.5Zn-5Si alloy was superior to that of A7075 alloy, and even higher resistance is expected if the morphology and size of primary $Mg_2Si$ phase is carefully controlled.

  • Sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF) with poly(phenylmethyl silsesquioxane, PPSQ) composite polymer electrolyte membranes were prepared and their proton conductivity, water uptake and methanol permeability of membranes were characterized. By controlling the ratio of $(CH_3)_3SCI\;and\;CISO_3H$ and reaction time, SPSF with $37\~75\%$ degree of sulfonation were synthesized. The increase of sulfonate groups in the base polymer resulted in the increase of the water uptake in the membranes as well as methanol permeability. Composite membranes were prepared by casting of DMF solution of SPSF and PPSQ. The proton conductivity of the composite membrane at room temperature was $2.8\times10^{-3}\~4.9\times10^{-2}S/cm.$ The increase of PPSQ contents in composite membranes resulted in a decrease in water uptake and methanol permeability. Composite membranes containing $5\%$ PPSQ did not make a significant effect on the proton conductivity nO methanol permeability compared with that of pristine SPSF, but a significant decrease of water uptake was observed.

  • Biomimetic actuators that can produce soft-actuation but large force capability are of interest. Nafion, an effective ionomeric material from DuPont, has been shown to produce large deformation under low electric fields (<10V/mm). Carbon nanotube/polymer nanocomposites were cast to enhance the electromechanical properties of the composites. Multiwalled carbon nanotube (M-CNT)/Nafion nanocomposites were prepared by a solution casting to investigate the effect of M-CNT loading in the range of 0 to 7 wt% on electromechanical properties of the M-CNT/Nafion nanocomposites. The measured elastic modulus and actuation force of the M-CNT/Nafion nanocomposites are drastically different, showing larger elastic modulus and improved electromechanical coupling, from the one without M-CNT.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of repeated porcelain firing process on the corrosion rates of the dental alloys. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Cr-Co, Cr-Ni and Pd-Ag alloys were used for this study. Each metal supported porcelain consisted of 30 specimens of 10 for 7, 9 and 11 firing each. Disc-shaped specimens 10 mm diameter and 3 mm thickness were formed by melting alloys with a propane-oxygen flame and casted with a centrifuge casting machine and then with the porcelain veneer fired onto the metal alloys. Corrosion tests were performed in quintuplicate for each alloy (after repeated porcelain firing) in Fusayama artificial saliva solution (pH = 5) in a low thermal-expansion borosilicate glass cell. Tamhane and Sheffe test was used to compare corrosion differences in the results after repeated firings and among 7, 9 and 11 firing for each alloy. The probability level for statistical significance was set at ${\alpha}$=0.05. RESULTS. The corrosion resistance was higher (30 mV), in case of 7 times firing (Commercial). On the other hand, it was lower in case of 11 times firing (5 mV) (P<.05). Conclusion. Repeated firings decreased corrosion resistance of Pd-Ag, Cr-Co and Cr-Ni alloys. The Pd-Ag alloy exhibited little corrosion in in vitro tests. The Cr-Ni alloy exhibited higher corrosion resistance than Cr-Co alloys in in vitro tests.

  • Lean duplex stainless steels with 0.087 wt.% gadolinium (Gd) were inert arc-melted and cast in molds of size $10mm{\times}10mm{\times}20mm$. The micro-hardnesses of the rolling direction (RD), transverse direction (TD) and short transverse (ST) direction were $258.5H_V$, $292.3H_V$, and $314.7H_V$, respectively. A 33% cold rolled specimen had the crystallographic texture that (100) pole was mainly concentrated to the normal direction (ND) and (110) pole was concentrated in the center of ND and RD. The corrosion potential and corrosion rate in artificial seawater and $0.1M\;H_2SO_4$ solution were in the range of $105.6-221.6mV_{SHE}$, $0.59-1.06mA/cm^2$, and $4.75-8.25mV_{SHE}$, $0.69-1.68mA/cm^2$, respectively. The friction coefficient and wear loss of the 0.087 w/o Gd-lean duplex stainless steels in artificial seawater were about 67% and 65% lower than in air, whereas the wear efficiency was 22% higher. The corrosion and wear behaviors of the 0.087 w/o Gd-lean duplex stainless steels significantly depended on the Gd phases.

  • Composite membranes were prepared by the solution casting method from sulfonated poly(etheretherketone)(sPEEK) and imidazole and phosphotungstic acid(PWA) to enhance the electrolytic properties of the membrane. TGA measurements showed that physical crosslinking due to acid-base interactions improved the thermal resistance to the desulfonation of sulfonic acid groups of the composite membrane and the addition of PWA enhanced the resistance to thermal decomposition of the composite membrane. The acid-base interaction decreased the water uptake, proton conductivity and methanol permeability of the sPEEK/imidazole composite membranes. The addition of PWA increased the proton conductivities while it decreased the water uptake and methanol permeability of sPEEK/imidazole/PWA composite membranes. Therefore, the selectivity of the composite membranes was enhanced by the addition of PWA.
