The primary objective of this study was to examine the toxic effects of PCP on activated sludge and to analyze its metabolic responses while treating wastewater containing pentachlorophenol (PCP) in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system operating under different control strategies. This study was conducted in two phases 1 and 2 (8-hr and 12-hr cycles). Each phase was operated with two control strategies I and II. Strategy I (reactor 1) involved rapid addition (5 minutes to complete) of substrate to the reactor with continuous mixing but no aeration for 2 hours. Strategy II (reactor 2) involved adding the feed continuously during the first 2 hours of the cycle when the system was mixed but not aerated. During both phases each reactor was operated at a sludge age of 15 days. The synthetic wastewater was used as a feed. The COD of the feed solution was about 380 mg/L. After the reference response for both reactors was established, the steady state response of each system was established for PCP feed concentrations of 0.1 mg/L, 1.0 mg/L, and 5.0 mg/L in SBR systems operating on both 8-hr and 12-hr cycles. Soluble COD removal was not inhibited at any feed PCP concentrations used. At 5.0 mg/L feed PCP concentration and in SBR systems operating on phase 2, the concentrations or ML VSS were decreased; selective pressure on the mixed biomass might be increased, narrowing the range of possible ecological responses; the settleability of activated sludge was poor; the SOURs were increased, showing that the systems were shocked. Nitrification was made to some extent at all concentrations of feed PCP in SBR systems operating on phase 2 whereas in SBR systems operating on phase 1 little nitrification was observed. Then, nitrification will be delayed as much as soluble COD removal is retarded due to PCP inhibition effects. Enhanced biological phosphorus removal occurring in the system operating with control strategy I during phase 1 of this work and in the presence of low concentrations of PCP was unreliable and might cease at anytime, whereas enhanced biological phosphorus removal occurring in the system operating with either control strategy I or II during phase 2 of this work and in the presence of feed PCP concentrations up to 1.0 mg/L was reliable. When, however, such processes were exposed to 5.0 mg/L PCP dose, enhanced phosphorus removal ceased and never returned.
The properties of the rubber composites containing a silane and silica were evaluated by changing the mixing time and temperature, in order to find the optimum mixing conditions. Characteristics of the compounds were evaluated after mixing at $120^{\circ}C$, $140^{\circ}C$, and $160^{\circ}C$ with various mixing time. With increasing of mixing time, mooney viscosity decreased while the bound rubber contents of the compounds increased. Viscosity rise by increased mixing time was bigger at low temperature and the higher the mixing temperature the faster in the formation of bound rubber. With lower mixing temperature of $120^{\circ}C$, cross-linking rate was almost constant. Dynamic viscoelastic properties and dispersity of the compound showed that dispersion of ingredients and reaction was not sufficient with the mixing time of less than 10min. On the contrary, with high temperature, it was obvious that good dynamic and physical properties could be obtained due to sufficient coupling reaction, however it was thought this high temperature is not optimum because of sensitive cross-linking rate and physical properties and excessive formation of bound rubber. Consequently, it was confirmed that the mixing condition of 10min at $140^{\circ}C$ was optimum for the silane coupling reaction and dispersion of functionalized S-SBR containing silica and silane.

Crosslink density of a rubber vulcanizate determines the chemical and physical properties, while bound rubber is an important factor to estimate reinforcement of a filled rubber compound. Extender oil is added to a raw rubber with very high molecular weight for improving processability of a rubber composite. Influence of extender oil on crosslink density, bound rubber formation, and physical properties of solution styrene-butadiene rubber (SSBR) composites with differing microstructures was investigated. Crosslink densities of non-oil-extended SSBR (NO-SSBR) vulcanizates were higher than those of oil-extended SSBR (OE-SSBR) ones. Bound rubber contents of NO-SSBR compounds were also greater than those of OE-SSBR ones. The experimental results could be explained by interfering of extender oil. The OE-SSBR vulcanizates had low modulus but long elongation at break, whereas the NO-SSBR ones had high modulus but short elongation at break. It was found that the crosslink densities affected the physical properties more than the bound rubber contents. The moduli increased with increase in the crosslink density irrespective of extender oil, while the elongation at break decreased. Each variation of the tensile strengths of NO-SSBR and OE-SSBR vulcanizates with the crosslink density showed a decreasing trend. Tear strength of the OE-SSBR vulcanizate increased with increase in the crosslink density, whereas variation of the tear strength of NO-SSBR vulcanizate with the crosslink density showed a weak decreasing trend.
Electrochemical Ion Exchang(EIX) electrode containing Amberlite IRP-64 as a cation ion exchange resin and Stylene-Buthylene-Rubber(SBR) as a binder was fabricated by the compressed diecasting method. The adsorption and elution characteristics in copper sulfate solution were investigated at the various electrode potentials and electrolyte pHs. In the adsorption process, it was found that the maximum adsorption rate of copper was obtained at -1800 mV and the ratio of adsorption was 92% during 90 min. In the elution process, the elution rate of copper was increased in proportion to anodic potential in the present experimental range and the ratio of elution was 88% during 50 mins at 3600 mV. The adsorption and elution processes were significantly affected by the variation of local pH in the vicinity of electrochemical ion exchange electrode. The higher performances of adsorption and elution were elution were obtained at basic and acidic eletrolytes.

In this paper, we introduced a near infrared fluorescence imaging system that has long working distance and analyzed on the effects of measurement variables such as gain, exposure time, working distance, magnification. Fluorescence signal intensity is growing up according to exposure time and magnification increasing, and it is getting stronger according to increase of gain, but the background signal intensity is getting stronger together. It causes low SBR. Due to a laser irradiation method, laser intensity distribution of the introduced system is not uniform and it makes fluorescence signal weak. So, we proposed a solution.
Characteristics of rubber mixture were evaluated in order to find the optimum mixing conditions of compounds containing silica and silane at various temperatures. With different mixing temperatures of 105, 120, 130, 140 and $160^{\circ}C$, the viscosity of the compound mixed at $105^{\circ}C$ showed a very high viscosity value. Compounds mixed the temperature range from at $120^{\circ}C$ to $140^{\circ}C$ showed lower viscosity than the compound mixed at $105^{\circ}C$. However, the difference was found to be small in those temperature ranges. On the contrary, at the mixing temperature of $160^{\circ}C$, the viscosity of compound increased again. Through the physical and dynamic observations, it was verified that at the mixing temperature below $120^{\circ}C$ only insufficient silica-silane reaction has been obtained. In addition, with the elevated mixing temperature of $160^{\circ}C$, Cross-linking occurred during mixing by the sulfur contained in coupling agent. In the temperature ranges from $120^{\circ}C$ to $140^{\circ}C$, because of the fast coupling reaction at higher temperature, it was thought to be more advantageous during reaction even though the trend of viscosity and dynamic mechanical property was not clear.
An in vitro experiment under laminar non-pulsatile blood flow and an acute canine ex vivo femoral A-V series shunt experiment were undertaken to investigate the effectiveness of saline perfusion through pores of porous tubes to prevent formation of mural thrombus. PS/SBR porous tubes were used for the in vitro experiment. Commercially obtained ePTFE porous tubes were etched by sodium naphthalenide, and the etched tubes were used for the ex vivo experiment. According to the results of the in vitro experiment, mural thrombus on the surface of the porous tribe could be prevented by the saline perfusion. Adhered blood cells decreased semi-logarithmically with increased perfusion rate (up to $0.022\;ml/min-cm^2$) of isotonic saline solution. According to results of the ex vivo experiment, mural thrombus decreased with increased perfusion rate (upto $0.060\;ml/min-cm^2$).

A new approach to the solubilization of waste activated sludge (WAS) using alginate-quaternary ammonium complex beads was investigated under controlled mild alkaline conditions. The complex beads were prepared by the reaction of sodium alginate (SA) with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl-octadecyldimethylammonium chloride (TSA) in acid solution, followed by crosslinking with $CaCl_2$. Treatment of WAS with SA-TSA complex beads was effective for enhancing the efficacy of WAS solubilization. The highest value of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) concentration (3,900 mg/L) was achieved after 10 days of treatment with 30% (v/v) SA-TSA complex beads. The WAS solubilization efficacy of the complex beads was also evaluated by estimating the concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). The maximum value of VFAs was 2,961 mg/L, and the overall proportions of VFAs were more than 75% of SCOD. The main components of VFAs were acetic, propionic, iso-butyric, and butyric acids. These results suggest that SA-TSA complex beads might be useful for enhancing the solubilization of WAS. The potential use of VFAs as the external carbon substrate for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) by a mixed microbial culture (MMC) was also examined. The enrichment of PHA-accumulating MMC could be achieved by periodic feeding of VFAs generated from WAS in a sequencing batch reactor. The composition of PHA synthesized from VFAs mainly consisted of 3-hydroxybutyrate. The maximum PHA content accounted for 25.9% of dry cell weight. PHA production by this process is considered to be promising since it has a doubly beneficial effect on the environment by reducing the amount of WAS and concomitantly producing an eco-friendly biopolymer.
