Cure characteristics of non-oil-extended solution SBR (S-SBR_NO) and oil-extended solution SBR (S-SBR_ EO) compounds reinforced with silica/carbon black were investigated. Minimum and maximum torques of S-SBR_ EO compounds were much smaller than those of S-SBR_NO ones. Delta torques of S-SBR_NO compounds were greater than those of S-SBR_EO ones, and that of S-SBR_NO compound increased with increase in the 1,2-unit content. Optimum cure time ($t_{90}$) of S-SBR compound decreased with increase in the 1,4-unit content, whereas it increased with increase in the 1,2-unit content. Cure rate index of S-SBR compound increased with increase in the 1,4-unit content, whereas it decreased with increase in the 1,2-unit content. Comparing cure characteristics of S-SBR_NO and S-SBR_EO compounds with the same 1,2-unit content, $t_{90}$s of S-SBR_EO compounds were longer than those of S-SBR_NO ones and cure rate indices of S-SBR_EO compounds were smaller than those of S-SBR_NO ones.
This study was concerned with the influence of reaction conditions on the surface friction properties of Syrene-Butadiene Rubber(SBR) sheet when it was chlorinated by chemical treatment method using the sodium hypochlorite and sulfuric acid. The results of this study were as follows. SEM photographs of chlorinated SBR surface showed uneven etching caused by the chlorination. In the FTIR spectra, the intensity of C=C peak of SBR was decreased with increasing the concentration of sodium hypochlorite. Otherwise there was no trace of C=C peak in spectrum of SBR treated with 5 wt% NaOCl with pH 0.1 for 90 seconds. EDX spectra showed that relative content of chlorine of SBR was increased with increasing the amount of sodium hypochlorite, and also affected with pH condition of acid solution. Friction angle and friction coefficient of SBR were influenced with concentration of sodium hypochlorite, but were not with pH condition of acid solution.
A calibration curve is needed to determine the SBR and BR blend ratio of SBR/BR blend rubber compounds using pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass chromatography (Py-GC/MS) or Py-GC. In general, a calibration curve is obtained using reference SBR/BR vulcanizates with various blend ratios. In this study, the calibration curves were obtained using reference samples made of rubber solutions and were compared to those plotted using the reference SBR/BR vulcanizates. Calibration curves using variations of 1,3-butadiene/styrene, 4-vinylcyclohexene (VCH)/styrene, 2-phenylpropene (PhP)/butadiene, PhP/VCH, 4-phenylcyclohexene (PhCH)/butadiene, and PhCH/VCH ratios with the BR content were examined for the suitability. We found that the calibration curves obtained using the mixed rubber solution references (1,3-butadiene/styrene and PhP/butadiene) could replace those constructed using the reference SBR/BR vulcanizates. The calibration curves of 1,3-butadiene/styrene and PhP/butadiene obtained using the raw references can be used for the determination of the SBR/BR blend ratios by applying some correction factors.
Water swelling behaviors of SBR vulcanizates with different reinforcing systems of carbon black, silica without a coupling agent, and silica containing a coupling agent were studied. Distilled water and 3.5% NaCl solution were used as swelling media. The water swelling ratios in the distilled water were higher than those in the salt solution. The water swelling ratios of the carbon black-filled samples were lower than those of the silica-filled ones. For the silica-filled SBR vulcanizates, the specimens without the silane coupling agent had higher water swelling ratios than those containing it. Water swelling behaviors of SBR composites with different 1,2-unit contents were also compared. The water swelling ratios tended to decrease by increasing the 1,2-unit content.
Solution styrene-butadiene rubber (S-SBR) is used to improve the wet grip and rolling resistance properties of tire treads. As blending of SBRs can improve the physical properties of tire treads, we investigated the effects of SBR type and blending ratio on the physical properties. Twelve SBR/SBR biblend composites were prepared using four SBRs with different microstructures. The glass transition temperature (Tg), tanδ at 0℃ (wet grip predictor), and tanδ at 60℃ (rolling resistance predictor) were obtained from dynamic mechanical analysis, and were compared to the expected values obtained from the results of single SBR samples. Most of the SBR/SBR biblend composites exhibited crosslink densities lower than the expected values. The tanδ values at 0℃ and 60℃ of the SBR/SBR blend composites deviated from the expected values, with many of the deviations being disadvantageous. Of the twelve composites, six samples had higher 0℃ tanδ values than the corresponding expected values, and four exhibited superior wet grip properties to those of the SBR single samples. In addition, two of the twelve samples exhibited improved rolling resistance properties as compared with the single SBR samples. Finally, four samples exhibited lower Tg values than expected, and the Tg of one composite was lower than those of the single SBR samples.

The physical properties of silica-filled SBR compounds (WSBR) prepared using silica-SBR wet masterbatches (WMB) were systematically investigated to understand the effect of the surface treatment of silica on the reinforcement performance of SBR. Treatment of silica with bis(triethoxysilylpropyl)tetrasulfide (TESPT) in the liquid phase, followed by mixing with an SBR solution and recovery by water stripping, easily produced silica-SBR WMB. However, insufficient surface treatment in terms of the amount and stability of the incorporated TESPT led to considerable silica loss and inevitable TESPT elution. Pretreatment of silica in the gas phase with TESPT and another organic material that enabled the formation of organic networks among the silica particles on the surface provided hydrophobated silica, which could be used to produce silica-SBR WMB, in high yields of above 99%. The amount and type of organic material incorporated into silica greatly influenced the cure characteristics, processability, and tensile and dynamic properties of the WSBR compounds. The TESPT and organic material stably incorporated into silica increased their viscosity, while the organic networks dispersed on the silica surface were highly beneficial for reducing their rolling resistance. Excessive dosing of TESTP induced low viscosity and a high modulus. The presence of connection bonds formed by the reaction of glycidyloxy groups with amine groups on the silica surface resulted in physical entanglement of the rubber chains with the bonds in the WSBR compounds, leading to low rolling resistance without sacrificing the mechanical properties. Mixing of the hydrophobated silica with a rubber solution in the liquid phase improved the silica dispersion of WSBR compounds, as confirmed by their low Payne effect, and preservation of the low modulus enhanced the degree of entanglement.
In this study, the new adhesion system was studied to improve the adhesion strength between polyester cord and rubber matrix. In order to enhance the adhesion strength through polyester cord's surface treatment, the NaOH solution was used. The NaOH solution concentrations of 0.03, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1 and 5 wt.% were used in surface modifying the polyester cord. The optimum condition showing the maximum adhesion strength of polyester cord with SBR compound containing bonding agent was at NaOH concentration of 0.05 wt.% with treatment time of 10 minutes. When the NaOH solution concentration was above 1 wt.%, the polyester cord due to the excess surface modification was damaged, and resulted in breakage during the adhesion test. Also, the adhesion strength between polyester and SBR could be improved by coating the polyester cord with triallylcyanurate(TC) adhesive. The drying condition of polyester cord coated with TC attributed to the adhesion strength. The maximum adhesion strength was obtained by using the polyester cord dried at $220^{\circ}C$ rather than dried at room temperature.
A number of tin-containing elastomers are produced commercially by Korea Kumho Petrochemical Co., Ltd. (KKPC) under the Kosyn Sol tradename. The effect of mastication of commercial and laboratory polymerized S-SBR has, been investigated using chemical mixer(ML-500), NMR, GPC and Mooney viscometer. Mastication of polymers containings coupling bonds is affected by the amount of stearic acid, the temperature of mixing and the time length of mixing.
The effects of zinc surfactant (ZB) on the bis(triethoxysilylpropyl)disulfide (TESPD)-silica mixture in natural rubber (NR) and solution butadiene-co-styrene rubber(S-SBR) were compared with respect to their rheological property, processability, physical properties, and silica dispersion. In the NR compound, addition of the ZB increased the reversion resistance time (T-2), the tensile modulus, and the BO time; however, lowered the viscosity, the HBU, and tans values. In the S-SBR copound, addition of the ZB increased the $tan{\delta}$ values while lowered the T-2, the tensile modulus the BO time, the viscosity, and the HBU of the compound. In the NR compounds, addition of the ZB significantly increased the processability and mechanical property. However, in the S-SBR compounds, it improved the processability the mechanical property was not improved.
