Flow and transport at fracture intersections, and their effects on network scale transport, are investigated in three-dimensional random fracture networks. Fracture intersection mixing rules complete mixing and streamline routing are defined in terms of fluxes normal to the intersection line between two fractures. By analyzing flow statistics and particle transfer probabilities distributed along fracture intersections, it is shown that for various network structures with power law size distributions of fractures, the choice of intersection mixing rule makes comparatively little difference in the overall simulated solute migration patterns. The occurrence and effects of local flows around an intersection (local flow cells) are emphasized. Transport simulations at fracture intersections indicate that local flow circulations can arise from variability within the hydraulic head distribution along intersections, and from the internal no flow condition along fracture boundaries. These local flow cells act as an effective mechanism to enhance the nondiffusive breakthrough tailing often observed in discrete fracture networks. It is shown that such non-Fickian (anomalous) solute transport can be accounted for by considering only advective transport, in the framework of a continuous time random walk model. To clarify the effect of forest environmental changes (forest type difference and clearcut) on water storage capacity in soil and stream flow, watershed had been investigated.
This study is to analyze numerically the spatial behaviors of the solute transport in a spatially correlated variable-aperture fracture under the effective normal stress conditions. Numerical results show that the solute transport in a fracture is strongly affected by the spatial correlation length of apertures and applied effective normal stress. According to increasing spatial correlation length, the mean residence time of solute is decreased and the tortuosity and Peclet number (is a dimensionless number relating the rate of advection of a flow to its rate of diffusion) is also decreased. These results mean that the geometry of the aperture distribution is favorable to the solute transport as the spatial correlation length is increased. However, according to the applied effective normal stress is increased, the mean residence time and tortuosity have a tendency to increase but the Peclet number is decreased. The main reason that the Peclet number is decreased, is that the solute is displaced by one or two channels with relatively higher local flow rate due to the increment of contact areas by increasing effective normal stress. Moreover, based on numerical results of the solute transport in this study, the exponential-type correlation formulae between the mean residence time and the effective normal stress are proposed.
This paper presents the numerical study to examine characteristics of fluid flow and solute transport in a rough fracture subject to effective normal stresses. The aperture distribution is generated by using the self-affine fractal model. In order to represent a nonlinear relationship between the supported normal stress and the fracture aperture, we combine a simple mechanical model with the local flow model. The solute transport is simulated using the random walk particle following algorithm. Results of numerical simulations show that the flow is significantly affected by the geometry of aperture distribution varying with the effective normal stress level while it is slightly affected by the fractal dimension that determines the degree of the fracture surface roughness. However, solute transport is influenced by the effective normal stress as well as the fracture surface roughness.

The present trend of disposing treated sewage water by allowing it to infiltrate the soil brings a new dimension to environmental problems. It is therefore necessary to identify the chemicals likely to be present in treated sewage water. A soil column experiment was conducted to determine the behavior of chemical species in soil columns applied with secondary treated sewage water. To predict the behavior of chemical species, a multicomponent solute transport model that includes the biochemical redox process and cation exchange process was developed. The model computes changes in concentration over time caused by the processes of advection, dispersion, biochemical reactions and cation exchange reactions. The solute transport model was able to predict the behavior of the different chemical species. The model reproduced the sequential reduction reaction. To design the safe depth of plow layer where $NO_3^-$ is totally reduced, a numerical study of $NO_3^-$ leach was done and it was found out that the pore velocity and concentration of $CH_2O$ at the inject water was found to affect $NO_3^-$ reduction in the mobile pore water phase. It is revealed that the multicomponent solute transport model is useful to design the land treatment system for $NO_3^-$ removal from wastewater.
The time-series resident solute concentrations, monitored at two field plots using the automated 144-channel TDR system by Kim (this issue), are used to investigate the dominant transport mechanism at field scale. Two models, based on contradictory assumptions for describing the solute transport in the vadose zone, are fitted to the measured mean breakthrough curves (BTCs): the deterministic one-dimensional convection-dispersion model (CDE) and the stochastic-convective lognormal transfer function model (CLT). In addition, moment analysis has been performed using the probability density functions (pdfs) of the travel time of resident concentration. Results of moment analysis have shown that the first and second time moments of resident pdf are larger than those of flux pdf. Based on the time moments, expressed in function of model parameters, variance and dispersion of resident solute travel times are derived. The relationship between variance or dispersion of solute travel time and depth has been found to be identical for both the time-series flux and resident concentrations. Based on these relationships, the two models have been tested. However, due to the significant variations of transport properties across depth, the test has led to unreliable results. Consequently, the model performance has been evaluated based on predictability of the time-series resident BTCs at other depths after calibration at the first depth. The evaluation of model predictability has resulted in a clear conclusion that for both experimental sites the CLT model gives more accurate prediction than the CDE model. This suggests that solute transport at natural field soils is more likely governed by a stream tube model concept with correlated flow than a complete mixing model. Poor prediction of CDE model is attributed to the underestimation of solute spreading and thus resulting in an overprediction of peak concentration.
A new numerical model was doveloped to simulate density-dependent ground water flow and solute transport. Accuracy of a numerical model depends upon how well it simulates advection dominant situations because numerical oscillations can spoil solutions for these situations. Nonlinear oscillation-absorption finite element method. based on the variational principle, was employed. Unlike previous numerical models, this model can easily be expanded for more complex situations. Accuracy of the model is evaluated by comparing with analytical solutions and results of other numerical model.
The groundwater is a very important part of the environment and must be protected for the benefit of the present and future generation. The contamination of soil and groundwater by chemicals has become an increasing concern in the recent past. These chemicals enter the groundwater system by a wide variety of mechanisms, including accidental spills, land disposal of domestic and industrial wastes and application of agricultural fertilizers. Once introduced into an aquifer, these contaminants will be transported by flowing groundwater and may degrade water quality at nearby wells and streams. For improving the management and protection of groundwater resources, it is important to first understand the various processes that control the transport of contaminants in groundwater. Predictions of the fate of groundwater contaminants can be made to assess the effect of these chemicals on local water resources and to evaluate the effectiveness of remedial actions. In this study, an attempt has been made to investigate the behaviour of solute transport through porous media using laboratory experiments. Sodium chloride was used as a conservative chemical in the experiment. During the experiment, pulse boundary condition and continuous boundary conditions were used. Experimental results have been presented for conservative solute transport in the sand. The pattern of the break through curve remains almost same in all the cases of varying flow rate and initial concentration of conservative chemical.
A modified model was developed for solute transport in porous media that can consider the movement of an LNAPL above the water table. From the results of sensitivity analyses with and without considering LNAPL movement, there are some differences according to the hydraulic gradient, the quantity of oil leakage and dispersivity. The mean deviation between the model in this study and a conventional model without LNAPL movement increases as the hydraulic gradient decreases and the quantity of oil leakage increases. Variation of dispersivity has no influence on the magnitude of the mean deviation. However, the spatial distribution of the deviation between the two models is wider as dispersivity increases. Furthermore, groundwater is at high risk of contamination in the vertical direction in the case that transverse dispersion value is large. A conventional model underestimates the concentration of solute in an aquifer where the movement of an LNAPL cannot be negligible: Based on the study results, it is important to understand how fast the LNAPL moves on the water table for realistic prediction of solute transport in an aquifer with the movable LNAPL on the water table.
This paper performs two-dimensional numerical simulation of surface water-groundwater coupled flow and solute transport to investigate the effect of the hyporheic exchange at the sediment-water interface (SWI) on surface solute transport. For the impermeable bed case in the absence of hyporheic flow, the trapping effect of flow recirculation associated with the ripple bed controls the shape of breakthrough curves (BTCs). However, the permeable bed case with hyporheic flow stimulates the extended tailing of the BTCs more significantly due to the elevated concentration of the BTC tailing resulting from slow hyporheic velocity. Also, the increased bottom pressure at the SWI with an increase in surface velocity shortens the BTC tailing because of increasing hyporheic velocity. These results infer that hyporhiec flow is critically important in predicting solute residence times in surface water.

A rigorous analysis on the effect of colloidal interactions on the separation characteristic has been extended to the case of non-dilute charged solute concentration. The solute partitioning within slit pores for a wide range of solute concentration has been predicted by performing the Monte Carlo technique. Using a hindered transport model, rejection coefficients have been estimated from the predicted concentration profile.
